At the above website I found the following information:
William Glendinning, or Glendenning, was a very odd person. He had preached in the traveling connection for about ten years but had to give up because of mental aberrations. Evidently he worked to get back into the active ministry, as this letter indicates.
[LANES, VIRGINIA]
[December 23, 1791][ This notice to William Glendinning seems to have been written from the Virginia Conference, which met at Lane's Chapel, Sussex County, Virginia, on Friday, December 23, 1791. The preachers listed here were in that conference. (See also letter of November -, 1792.) Some preachers did not sign.
[To William Glendinning}] [The Minutes show that William Glendinning was admitted to the ministry in 1776 and traveled until 1786, when his name is listed among those "who desist from traveling." He was on the Brunswick Circuit, Virginia, in 1785 and developed a mania of some type. In 1784 he had been appointed to Nova Scotia but refused to go. At that conference he was refused ordination because of "want of gifts." Asbury records in the Journal, Sunday, December 26, 179O, at Newcastle, Hanover County, Virginia:
"William Glendinning spoke after me: I am clear he is not right in his head or heart, and am therefore resolved he shall speak no more at my appointments." The Minutes show that he secured a pension in 179O of £8 6s. lOd. (Jacob S. Payton.)

Just so there is no misunderstanding. We have been having quite a go-round looking for information since our latest 37/37 match was made.
When anyone joins the surname project for testing, I request from them a lineage from the individual being tested back to their earliest known Clendenin (v/s) ancestor. Both of the ladies' who sponsored the participants for the 37/37 match have done so and their participants' (a brother, in one case, and a father, in the other) lineages are listed on the website at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~clendin/.
By going to the comparison chart you can locate the 37/37 match for two men named James. Clicking on the kit number in the left hand column takes you to the lineage for that participant.
The posting of lineages is only required on the website in conjunction with the project testing. Posting of lineages for non-participants is encouraged but is voluntary. The link Lineages will take you to a list of lineages that have been posted.
If there are any questions, please contact me.

The Spokesperson for the recent DNA Participant, Descendant of James
Clendinning, Sr., UE contacted me and asked me for what I have on her Line.
What follows are selected document transcripts that link each generation
down from James Sr. UE to Dennis Clendenin whom I presume is her ancestor.
All of the connections are very clear here except for the link between #3 &
#4. Preponderance of evidence is all I have. A broader view of this family
makes the connection seem pretty clear however. Perhaps this family
representative has more information to add to this generation.
For the record, I am descended from James Sr. UE's daughter Anne who married
Jonathan Matthews, UE, Butler's Ranger.

ALOCAL AND MISCELLANEOUS.
LINCOLN SPRING ASSIZES.
SECOND DAY.
April 2d, 1867.
Court opened this morning at 9:30 o'clock.
Durham et. al. vs. Newcombe - Ejectment. This action excited considerable
attention, from the fact that very many of the titles to property in town
might be affected by the result. The facts of the case appeared to be that
in 1832 the late Jonathan Huston Clendennan conveyed a block of land on Yate
Street, and extending back to Cherry Street, to Mr. Rufus Wright, who
retained possession of it until the marriage of his daughter to the late
Henry Burgoyne, in 1853, when he conveyed the south-westerly half of the lot
to her. The deed from Clendennan to Wright is very faulty in the
description, and so is that from the latter to his daughter. The two
witnesses to the first deed, Mr. Gershom Wright and Mr. Smith, are dead, and
the only evidence as to the intention of Mr. Clendennan was to be obtained
from collateral testimony. Mr. H. J. Mittleberger represented Mr. Clendennan
as having been a very careful man of business, and stated that he (Mr. M.)
was the oldest inhabitant, having come to St. Catharines in 1827. - The next
witness, Mr. Boles, stated the same in reference to Mr. Clendennan's
business habits, and claimed to have come to this town in 1823. The next
witness, Mr. Henry Mittleberger, showed that he was the "oldest inhabitant,"
for he came here in 1822, and said that Mr. Clendennan was a very careful
man, marking the boundaries of his land every two or three days with stones,
bottles, oyster shells, &c., a statement which was received with some
merriment. Verdict, by consent, for plaintiff, with one shilling damages,
with leave for the defendant to move to set the verdict aside and have one
entered for him. The Court to draw inferences from the facts which are
undisputed."
I found this last night and thought I had sent it out but I didn't a copy of
the message so here goes again:

Re the "possibilities" information posted by Sharon:
James Clendenin of MIfflin was the weaver of Mifflin (there is another reference on him out there) If you have access to Ancestry's census he is in the 1820 for Mifflin county. I don't think he's there before 1810 as there is a gap in the Clendenin surname between the James m Isabella Huston group and my James leaving by 1794. There is also a Thomas Clendennen that shows up on tax lists in Mifflin in the early 1800's, I'm not sure where he belongs either.

There are a lot of odd little facts that are hard to place as people moved around so much. Plus there are new emigrants coming in to add to the delema of sorting this all out. Unfortunately you are right - there are way to many James with a brother John out there.

My source for a death date of "James Clendenin m: Isabella Huston, died
1804." Is from Tom Thatcher's website "The Clendenin Family of Cumberland
County, Pennsylvania". I haven't done any research in this area at all,
except through publications. So I leave this area to you who have the
expertise. Upper Canada is my forte and this is what I've been concentrating
on. Lori has since indicated that Jonathan's father James died in 1784.
I'd be interested to know if anyone has a James that died around the pre
1826 time that might have given cause for a letter "Heirs of James
Clendenan" to be remaining in the Post-Office at St. Catharines, January 5,
1826. It could be an important point to look at any possible links.
I have been able to pretty well rule out that the James that might have died
at this point was not one of the grandsons of James Sr. UE, but it is
possible that it was James Sr. UE's son James whom I have alive in 1804,
Woodhouse Twp, Norfolk Co, Upper Canada, but then I lose him. I don't know
if he died at that point or moved back to the US or to another part of the
Province. I'm looking into this at present. He sold his property there in
1804, so there is no evidence of a Will or Letters of Administration at this
point.
If he moved back to the US and he died around 1826, then someone might have
him as head of their family tree.
Please note: Many of the descendants of the Clendining, UEL family found
their way back to the US, so it is worth keeping one's mind open to this
possibility.

Dear Lee and Lori,
Are we all talking about the same James Clendenin? I was thinking
that Lee was discussing James Clendenin, son of John Clendenin and Janet
Huston. Info on this James was that he married Isabella Huston
(daughter of Samuel Huston and Isabella Sharon) and had a son, Jonathon
who went to St. Catherine's in 1809. I don't have death date for James.
Mary Louise Townsend
Sharon, Mary Louise, Lee and Liz:
Yes, The Jonathan Clendenin was the son of James m. Isabella Huston. James was the son of John Clendenin and Janet Huston. Jonathan went to Canada and died their from an obit found there and family history that stated he went to Canada.
What Lee had was a reference to letters left at the St. Catherine's post office in 1826 addressed to the Heirs of James Clendennen. Johnathan happens to be in that area and his father was named James.
From Tax lists and property records James Clendennen left E. Pennsboro in 1774 and took out a land warrant in Fermanagh Township, Cumberland County. According to tax lists he died by 1784. His wife is listed as paying the taxes in 1783 - taxes paid in arrears she paid them probably after June of 1784 as Jonathan (reported on records and the youngest son of James and Isabella) obit states he was so old (can't remember off the top of my head the age) but when I subtracted back the age I got March of 1785 as his birth date (or thereabouts) Subtract 9 months for a pregnancy and James the father had to be alive until about June of 1784.
The property tax was paid by the "widow Clendennen" for tax year 1783.
Paid by "heirs of James Clendennen 1784 - 1794"
No record of taxes paid for 1795 - 1803
James JR sold his 3 shares (his two and his sister Isabellas one share) in 1803 to James Renshaw. John, is brother, of Jefferson County, Ohio sold his one share in 1804
The other three shares were handled by inquest through the orphans court. Not sure when those funds were dispursed.
No, I don't think that James b BEFORE 1748 and James b 1752 are sons or grandsons of John of E. Pennsboro m. Janet Huston.
1) James b BEFORE 1748 had a son b 1756, so this James is probably b c 1730 and would be a contenporary of John of E Pennsboro's son James (m. Isabella Huston) who was also b. about 1730's. They have recorded wives and families so I don't think they are the same person.
2) James b 1752 is in the area of Fermanagh township, but I cannot prove he is James m. Isabella's son. There is a lot of circumstantial evidence just no actual proof. The thing that throws me off is there is an article in a newspaper where a James Clendennen posts a reward for a run away horse from the Huston Farm. This happens after my James has left the area and is in Butler county. So this suggests that the son James m. Isabella and my James are separate people also. At one time two listers gave me information that they had found 3 James Clendennen's in Fermanagh Township. I asked the Cumberland Co Historical Society for that info and they could not find it. It is not on the tax lists, nor census, nor listing of inhabitants (pre census). ???
I think they are related to John of E Pennsboro, just not decendents of his.

Ladies,
I, too, would like an answer to Mary Louise's question. Is there a possibility that Lori's James and Liz's/Lee's James are descendants of John and Janet Huston?
Lori wrote:
I can find little on the other family in the old posts in the archives of Clendinen-L to see where they are from. From what I did find he James b bef 1748 seems to have a child James born in 1756 who is accounted for. He has a brother John but no son James listed for the brother. Of course they could have other brothers, uncles, cousins etc, that my James could be the son of.
The other interesting thing is this family were loyalists to England. My James fought on the rebel side in Washington's campaign.
The family of James b bef 1748 was in New Jersey prior to moving to Canada. I have no information on Clendennen's in that state. There was some suggestion in one post that they might be related to the New Hampshire group. Which is interesting to me since I was born in New Hampshire, though my father was in the Air Force and not from that area. My Clendennen's come from PA. (1775 - 1920).

settled late, he can be ruled out?

Dear Lee and Lori,

Huston. Info on this James was that he married Isabella Huston

Mary Louise Townsend
Jonathan Clendennen's father James, died in 1784. His widow is listed on the 1783 tax list for Fermanagh township, Cumberland County PA. Taxes paid one year in arrears puts her paying the taxes in late 1784 if Johnathan's obit is correct with his age and death date (birth March 1785).
There was no will that I can find. The eldest son James sold his three shares (his 2 and 1 that was Isabella's) in 1803. The buyer petitioned the orphans court for the other shares. Before that was settled the brother John of Jefferson county, Ohio sold his one share. The remaining three were handled by the orphan's court. I don't have when that was exactly settled, but by 1826 Fermangh is in Juniata county. It could be the letter is Jonathan's share.
The reference seems to be letters REMAINING in the post office of St. Catherine's. These could be letters not picked up by 1826 and not ones postmarked 1826. I would guess that it's either from his father's estate or possibly his brother James'? Though I have nothing on the brother specifically other than he sold his shares.

Hi all,
I have this newspaper notice that I thought might be of interest for the "F"

Can anyone identify who the James Clendenan might be that would have died

My grandmother was a Clendenning but I do not have correct information on her
parents or family. Her name was Polly and I think her father was James. She
lived in Broome County, NY or Chenango County. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.
Hi Sharon,
Several attempts to click on the URL from two different browsers
returned a "file not found" error 404 so others may have trouble too. I
used the first portion of the address into rootsweb and got into it from
the file index there.
I copied the info so I can refer to it later. It wasn't clear to me
what determined a winner in their contest. Is it anyone who can
document their lineage back to the 16th or 17th century in England, in
which case their might be multiple winners? Had you thought about what
criteria for acceptable applicants we would want for the Clendenin
line?
Martha
We are not Clendenen's, but Claude Oscar Clendenen was Brian's grandfather.
His great grandfather was Robert Lee Clendenen (b. 1884). I am almost
positive Robert Lee is related to the Clendenen families Virginia-West Virginia.
Roberts parents, according to census records were born in Virginia and West
Virginia (Could have been the same place, but wound up in W Va in 1860). I am also
convinced Robert belongs to these families because i believe the farm Robert
Lee lived on near Falls Mills below Nemours has something to do with the land
Robert Green Clendenen owned. Family information has it that the farm Oscar
was born on was his grandfcathers and fathers. Childrens names also are the
names of many of the Clendenen's of Va/W.Va. I think Robert Lee "fell through
the cracks" because of lack of census records in 1890.
Because we are not Clendenen's, we cannot participate in the DNA project. I
applaud your efforts because eventually we will probably benefit, but until i
can connect us positivly with this family it is nice information, but not at
all helpful. I'd like to see more work done on later generations. Perhaps
some interviews of living family members and perhaps some more information from
land records (sales and purchases, marriage records, and can somebody PLEASE
see if they can get some burial records from Grandview Memory Gardens in
Tazewell county. I have information Robert and his wife Ettie are buried there -
perhaps with other family members. Yes, i have the phone number and address, and
no, they won't tell me anything because i am not there to do my own research)
We have no living relatives to ask. I appologize for asking someone else to
help with these things, but because of age and illness we cannot travel to
Bluefield/FallsMills.
Please keep networking with the Clendenen's (of various spellings). My hope
is that someday someone will be reviewing their records or traveling to a
cemetery or court house and come across Robert and Ettie's names. Perhaps they
will say to themselves "Hey! Who are these people? maybe I can throw their names
out to the group and somebody will know them"
Candace and Brian
You know, I thought for sure my email inbox would be full of messages regarding this 37/37 match that was just reported through our DNA testing. But there has not been one response.
Are you just tired of the whole thing? Don't want to hear about it unless it involves you? Given up that anything of value will come out of the DNA testing?
Somebody -- all of you, any of you -- talk to me. Please.
Sharon
