Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I wanted to thank those of you who sent me return emails stating that you had finally received mail from either the Clendenin or Clendinen mailing lists--in some cases you received the messages two or three times. Thanks for bearing with me.
A note of explanation: By Thursday of last week I began to realize that, for whatever reason, my emails to the list were not getting through. Since I occasionally have problems with my ISP I re-sent some of the messages.
It turned out to be a problem with the Rootsweb server and all of the messages were queued up to be sent as soon as their problem was corrected. As you can tell from your in-box that situation has been cleared up.
Let me also take this time to give you a quick update: We have 12 samples at the FTDNA lab. Six are third panel upgrades to 37 markers. Another one is a retest which is being done free of charge when there was some question about the original results. We have two more which are first panel tests and three more which are second panel tests. There is one more kit which has not yet been returned to the company due to a health situation in the participant's family. The test results for those currently in the lab are due between now and the third week of September.
For any new participants the minimum test should be a 25-marker test and prefereably the 37-marker test. Please continue to encourage those sitting on the fence that the grass is greener on our side and urge them to be tested. The more who are tested leads us closer to the answers we seek.
Thanks,
Sharon

Hello,
We have another test report for markers 1-12. These are for Steve Clendenan. As it stands right now we seem to have five unique haplotypes (haplotype is the name given to the first 12 markers as they are reported).
Steve, Joel, and Guy have each established a unique haplotype although Steve and Guy's are reasonable close - 10/12. Barney, Walter, and Alan match each other perfectly on 25/25 markers and therefore establish another unique haplotype.
The remaining men fall into another haplotype. This group includes George, Randal, Mike, Ron, Don, John, Denver, Willie, and Bill. Denver and John match the others 11/12.

You have all been rather quiet for the last few days. Did anyone receive messages through the list yesterday?
Tell me what's going on with you genealogically. I feel like I'm out here in cyberspace and I'm completely alone.

Mrs. Clendenin was born in Lexington, Ky. Nov. 20, 1800, and was married to Wm. Clendenin in Bourbon county in the year 1822. She came to Missouri in '39, (note - this is hard to read, could it be '59?), and in the year 1836
united with the Christian church. Mrs. Clendenin was the mother of Mrs. Bruce Baldwin of this city. She was a kind and affectionate mother, a sincere friend to all and especially to those in distress, and a consistent
Christian, and, when death stilled the throbbing pulse, she died in the full assurance of a blessed beyond. Children, grieve not, though the clods of the valley hide from mortal view all that remains of the loved one, place your trust that her whom you have so tenderly loved and cherished, has

I received this this morning and thought you would be interested. I have underlined the areas that would be most important to you.
I went through an interesting exercise today that I thought that I would
>share with the list. First, I did a search on Y-Search using the 12-marker
>modal values for R1b. These 12 modal values represent what FTDNA is now
>calling the "Western Atlantic Modal Haplotype" or WAMH. Perhaps that is to
>distinguish it from the original AMH, which had only 6 markers. Anyway,
>this search pulled up 195 haplotypes that matched the WAMH exactly on 12
>markers. Over half of these have results for more than 12 markers,
>including 146 that have values for markers 13-25 (in the FTDNA scheme) and
>49 for markers 26-37.
>Finally, it seems that congratulations are due to four individuals named
>Buchanan, Clendenin, Glenn, and Phillips, who appear to have been true to
>their deep R1b roots and have never moved away from the 25-marker modal
>values. Possibly, these are the same values possessed by the founder of
>R1b, though we can't be sure of that. Or, maybe along their lines there has
>been some movement away on a marker or two, but always returning to the
>modal values. The simplest explanation, however, appears to be that the
>patrilineal lines leading down to these four individuals haven't changed
>their first 25-marker values in 15,000 years.
Hello,
We have another test report for markers 1-12.

I was chatting with another researcher about the Clendenin DNA study
when I realized how much I don't know about the Clendenin lines. I have
a question:
I remember that Archibald Clendenin of the 1763 Cornstalk massacre had
one son who was captured by the Indians and released with the Bouquet
agreement. Did this son have descendents? Is there a possibility that
there is still a male with the last name Clendenin who descends from
this son? I am sure that someone has already discussed this, but I
missed the answer.

Can anyone help them?

Subject: Robert Lee Clendenen and Ettie Carter
Sharon,
We are researching the following tree and have reached a dead end.
Robert Lee Clendenen born Nov 2, 1884 in Tazewell Co Va
Married Etta (Ettie) Carter (or Porter) born 1886 or 1888
Their children:
Robert James Clendenen born Sept 30, 1910
Claude Oscar Clendenen born December 3, 1912
Vernon R Clendenen born April 4, 1913
Pearl Clendenen born Sept 15, 1917
The above information came from Oscar's bible and obituaries cut from newspapers. (and Census records from Ancestry.com)
Robert and Ettie had a farm near Nemours and Claude Oscar, who lived in Falls Mills, worked the farm after their death. Oscar's daughter, Carol Clendenen Neel Coeburn Allen sold the farm after Oscar's death. We don't know who Robert's parents were and are researching them. Their birthdates fall in those weird census years.
If you have information about these Clendenen's, please help us.
Thank you,
Candace Lombardo and Brian Coeburn
If anyone has further information about these male descendants or if there are other that you have proven, please contact me.
Thank you.

10. CHARLES H./A.5 CLENDENIN (WILLIAM4, CHARLES3, WILLIAM2, CHARLES1) was born March 05, 1835, and died January 16, 1915. He married SOPHIA CROSS.
Notes for CHARLES H./A. CLENDENIN:
Family Bible Record indicates name as Charles A. (Augustus) Clendinen: email from Charles D. Clendinen, Bartow, FL Same email says that Charles Augustus Clendinen was known as "Capt. Clendinen"; a captain [riverboat?] on the Ohio River, during and after the Civil War.
Children of CHARLES CLENDENIN and SOPHIA CROSS are:
i. JOHN WILLIAM6 CLENDENIN, b. Abt. 1862; d. Abt. 1940; m. ANNA STUART; b. April 01, 1868, Gallia Co., OH.
Upgrades to 37 markers have been ordered for Randal Clendenin, Denver Clendenin, Bill Clendenin and John Mark Clendening. These four men represent interesting lines. I hope that the results of the further markers will help determine a common ancestor.
I use Family Tree Maker and it has a Report that gives me a list of
everyone I have input in the computer. There are options as to what
info I can have on this list. I have Birth date, Death date, and a Code
that I input in the personal number field for each individual that tells
me what family group they belong to. One of the options for how this
list is organized is by First Middle Last name, which is what I use, so
I can see all the Isobells together. Then, I just have to click on
the name, and the rest of the data appears. Unfortunately, I dont have
most of my stray Clendinnens in the data base. Im not familiar with
the other Genealogy programs to I can not comment on what other options
may be available.

We have received two of the third panel upgrades which were ordered recently. Ron and Don match at 35/37. The FTDNA explanation of this is as follows:
"35/37 You share the same surname (or a variant) with another male and you mismatch by only two 'points' --a 35/37 match. It's most likely that you matched 24/25 or 25/25 on previous Y-DNA tests and your mismatch will be found within DYS 439 or DYS 385 A, 385 B,389-1 and 389-2, from our first panel of 12 markers, or from within the second panel at DYS #'s 458, 459 a, 459b, 449, or within 464 a-d [note: 464c]. If you matched exactly on previous tests you probably have a mismatch at DYS 576, 570, CDYa or CDYb in our newest panel of markers. Your mismatch is likely within the range of most well established surname lineages in Western Europe. "
May I suggest that Don and Lorinda colloborate very closely in further research?

So, if I am looking for a "James" I must check through all the different
spellings that I have used, including one James who had his name spelled 3
different ways on one document.
In one of the genealogy classes I have taken it was pointed out that the
person writing the document or record TRIED to spell the name differently each
time he wrote it. It was a sign of "intelligence" if he could come up with
different ways to spell it.
My solution: GIVE IT UP! You're not gonna win! What I have done on the
lines I KNOW are mine, but even today spelled differently, is to just spell them
with my OWN spelling, which is CLENDENEN. That way when they come up in the
database all of the given names are alphabetical.
These people for the most part DID NOT CARE how their names were spelled.
From all of the records I have looked at I have come to the conclusion that
the rule was:
I tell you my name and YOU get to choose how you are going to spell it.
Then you have to factor in the nationality and accent of speaker, the same
for the person entering the information in the record, (what the speaker said
and what the speller heard), any other CLENDENEN'S he may have known from
previous experience and how their name was commonly spelled, and the fact that
in a lot of cases these people were providing information to a government that
they didn't necessarily feel had any right to it to begin with.
(Particularly evident in the south right after the Civil War. Many of those people
thought that the LAW that demanded that they report births or answer census
questions was just a "suggestion".)
I have recently received copies of three different letters written in the
1850 & 1851. They were sent to the family of my 3rd g-grandparents, Robert A.
& Amanda (Hinchman) Clendenen from Amanda (Hinchman) Clendenen's father,
William Hinchman. I one letter to a granddaughter, he spells the name CLENDENON.
In the other two letters he writes the name twice in each letter, once in
the address and once at the end of the letter, and he spells it CLENDENIN and
CLENDENON in each letter. (Even her own father wasn't "picky".)
Following are the Bourbon Co. KY tax lists that I have just finished today.
Regardless of how the name was spelled, everybody knew who the people were and
the tax man still got his money.

I have found the same variations in researching my CALDWELL'S (Caldwell,
Coldwell, Colwell) and ROBINSON'S (Robinson, Robeson, Robison, Robertson). The
spelling means NOTHING!

I have the same problem Carol does. I get around some of it by looking for a
wife's name if it is known.
But I have to go back to an old "song", if you will.Even if our ancestors
weren't illiterate and most of the early ones were for all intents and
purposes, they were not the ones who wrote their names in the public record
books or on the census takers rolls.
Now we have to couple that with the indexers inability to read the
handwriting. Or for that matter our inability to read the handwriting.
