Clendenen's,
We are still looking for the parents of Robert Lee Clendenen and Etta Carter.
Grand Daddy (Claude) Oscar Clendenen was born on a farm near Nemours WV,
although some records show Clear Fork, Bluefield WV (it may be the same place).
The farm was sold and he spent most of his life buying it back. We have heard
the farm was the family home place of Robert Lee's parents. Can anyone in
the Bluefield area check this for us? Sadly, It was sold after his death. We
have no idea who Robert Lee's parents are, although census records say he, as
well as both of his parents were born in West Virginia. Anyone with information
please hel[p us. We suspect he was part of the Robert Green Clendenen family.

Hi All,
I have delayed in answering because I needed time to research to give you accurate information.
One change that is needed is that for the webiste. We gave wrong information. It should be:
http://www.british-history.ac.uk
If all else fails go to Google and search for "British History Online".
When at the site enter Glendoning which will give you information on William of Gelston or Glendonwyn which will lead you to information on the last three Glendonwyn sisters.
Sharon, with regards to John and Elizabeth, as you know Ninian had two sons named John. Both married ladies by the name of Elizabeth Gordon. John of Parton married Elizabeth Gordon, daughter of Robert Gordon of Lochinvar, and John of Drumrash married Elizabeth Gordon, daughter of Alexander Gordon of Airds and Barnboard. As you can see life is not made easy. You definitely have not fallen down Alice's hole. It took us awhile.
GT's chapter 10 discusses the family. John [ 16K ] and his sister Agnes were supposedly the only two children of Robert [14K ]. We have found evidence that John is the second son of Robert. We believe that the older son may have been Robert who had a son Robert as well. The Sasines seem to indicate the possibility.
Is everyone aware that Sasines and Deeds are two separate sets of documents and as such are listed in separate registers. For a good description we suggest a book, which may be available to you by inter library loan, entitled
In Search of Scottish Ancestory by Gerald Hamilton-Edwards.
Another helpful tool is the website http://scottishdocuments.com
It is possible to produce an index of existing Scottish wills. There is no cost to access the website. It is necessary to check all various spellings of the surname. If you find something interesting you can pay to get a copy. Of interest there are wills for:
Alexander Glendinning 8 / 8 / 1701 of Drumrash [not certain who he is]
Archibald Glendinning 19 / 5 / 1663 in Over Howcleuch, Parish of Crawfurd-Lindsay
Lancelot Glendoning 23 / 10 / 1685 in Quass
Alexander Glendoning 24 / 2 / 1690 of Drumrash
John Glendinning 21 / 3 / 1755 in Crawford
We are aware of the Dunbar marriage and the connection to the Scottish Royal family. We plan to look at the website later tonight.
I hope this helps.
Steve in Canada
Hi Steve,
I'm a little confused but let me lay out what I'm looking at and we'll go from there.
I received a copy of a tree drawn by a Murray who claims descent from Ninian's marriage to Janet Dunbar. (I've misplaced my copy of GTC in amongst tax papers, other Clendenin documents, etc) so I've been using this tree. On this particular tree he states that John of Parton, son and heir of Ninian and Katherine Maxwell, married Elizabeth Gordon.
Now if I understand your statement correctly "John Glendonyng being the second son of Robert of Billies son of Robert Glendonyng second son of John Glendonyng (Drumrash) and Elizabeth Gordon" I feel as though I've dropped down the hole after Alice and I don't know how I'm getting out of here. Please straighten me out.
I don't know if you're familiar with Stirnet or not, but on the Dunbar of Mochrum page there the lineage from Janet back to the earliest in that list also gives her a claim to royal blood as her ancestors were John Dunbar, 1st Earl of Moray and Marjorie Stewart, dau of Robert II of Scotland. Not that it is particularly important to the overall scheme of things but I am sure that some of our "cousins" are quite proud of the claim to Scots royal blood.
I am sure these men left descendants which were not considered in GTC as I have found IGI parish records as far back as 1598 with the marriage of a Simon to Margaret Sluman in Roxburghshire. It has been illuminating to learn that there were Glendinnings (v/s) in most of the shires of Scotland before 1700. These movements can probably be attributed to fortuitious marriages and moves to another portion of the country.
I envy you the information you have at hand (well, 1-1/2 hours away) and the plethora of information you have gathered in your searching. I tried the URL you posted but got back a disconnect notice so I will try it again.

Hi All,
The DNA study has made us think about a few things. We have gone back and reviewed much of the information we have and have had a second look at GT's work and copies of the documentation he used.
We are lucky enough to live about 1 1/2 hours from Guelph University. What is so fabulous about this University? It contains the largest collection of Scottish matter outside of Scotland. This is not a genealogy collection. It contains much of the material held in the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh as well as other local institutions. The catalogue to the library is on line. We have been able to locate and photocopy the sources that GT used and have discovered and accessed many new ones along the way.
The e-mail with reference to the marriage of Ninian Glendonwyn to Janet Dunbar has prompted us to write. Here are some sources to consider that we believe GT did not use with regards to the descendants of John of Drumrash (amongst others) which contained good information. These are:
Armet, C.M., trans. Kirkcudbright Sheriff Court Deeds Volume 1 1623-1675, Edinburgh: Oliver & Boyd, 1939.
Armet, C.M., trans. Kirkcudbright Sheriff Court Deeds Volume 2 1676-1700, Edinburgh: Oliver & Boyd, 1939.
Skelton, Constance Oliver & Bulloch, John Malcolm. Gordons Under Arms. Edinburgh: The New Spalding Club, MCMXII.
Acts & Proceedings of The General Assemblies of the Kirk of Scotland from the year MDLX Edinburgh 1845.
Bute, John, trans. Kirkcudbright Town Council Records 1606-1658 Edinburgh: Oliver & Boyd, 1958.
Stevenson, David, ed. The Government of Scotland under the Covenanters 1637-1651 Edinburgh: Scottish History Society 1982.
Fraser, Sir William, The Melvilles Earls of Melville and the Leslies Earls of Leslie Edinburgh 1890.
as well as the following website:
http://www.british-history
This led us to the House of Commons journals.
There are many other sources that can be used which were not considered at the time. This is just a taste.
One of the gems that turned up was a reference to John Glendonyng being the second son of Robert of Billies son of Robert Glendonyng second son of John Glendonyng (Drumrash) and Elizabeth Gordon. The reference being Kirkcudbright Town Council Records noted above. We believe that the other son might have been Robert, as there is another Robert who was also mentioned at a later time. Did he leave descendants???
The same book indicated that Robert of Billies died in 1657 as opposed to 1672-73 as has been suggested.
We could go on with many other finds, but time is going and we must start dinner.
Happy hunting,
Steve in Canada

Hello all,
Just a quick note to let you know that I just placed an order for a kit using the remaining funds from the general donation fund and the FTDNA matching funds.
Until such time as we have more donations credited to our general fund all orders must be placed by the individual or the person who is bearing the cost for that kit directly from FTDNA.
I want to thank all of you who, even if you weren't sure you understood, decided to take a chance on the testing.
Our latest participant is a descendant of yet another fairly early PA Clendenin -- John Clendenin (1740-1813) m Rebecca deFrance of Lycoming Co.
Happy Holidays.

Cathy said >>Ok so That means as Both George and Randall Have William Clendenin of NC as a Direct ancestor, And John Glendenings Line goes back thru William Glendenning and Rose Anne Kirkpatrick, this William Presumably??Connected way Back To Ninian Glendonwyns 1st Wife Katherine Maxwell, sooo Is this Saying that The john Glendening Also Connects with the Charles that Went to WV? And Also Meaning that Williams NC line connects too the Charles Line in NC?? Or am I getting Confused here*G* But thats What im reading<<
Okay, let's stop right here and look at what Cathy said. "... thru William Glendenning and Rose Anne Kirkpatrick,..." We have no proof there was a wedding between a William Glendenning and a Rose Anne Kirkpatrick.
"...Connected way Back To Ninian Glendonwyns 1st Wife Katherine Maxwell,..." Ninian Glendonwyn was married twice and had sons by both marriages. There is/was a line of descendants through both women so there is no reason to fixate on the children of Katherine Maxwell. And at a point closer to us today, Katherine Maxwell's children's descendants "daughtered out." In other words there were no males to inherit but the heiress married a man who then took the Glendonwyn/Glendinning name in order to preserve the title. Descendants of the first man in this situation is not a Glendonwyn by blood but is a Murray. It happened again in the (Murray) Glendonwyn line and this time the heiress married a Scott. Since the name was taken by men of other blood lines, the bloodline does not follow through the Lairds of Parton.
There was no reason for such an event(s) in the descendants of Ninian's second marriage to Janet Dunbar, so these descendants should be of the same bloodline as Ninian. And there isn't a lot of information about the children of the second marriage in GTC's House of Glendonwyn and that is why I'm pursuing the line.
Also it should be remembered that Ninian's son, Alexander, was also married twice.
It's my thought that anything we thought we knew before we started the DNA testing should be put on the back burner and only brought out when we find something to prove a relationship.
"Sure be Excited to Get the Victorian CLendinnens From Australia DNA Results
in, as he is My Grandfathers Brothers Son." The first 12 markers are in for Brian and Stephen both but I have not posted them yet. They are, however, identical to Guy's first 12 markers.
The point to be remembered here is that Guy's 25 markers did not match up with the 13 men (in yellow). Therefore, Brian and Stephen could, and probably will be, dead on matches for Guys results and they will still not be related to the other 13 men.
If you will please look at the website comparison chart at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~clendin/dna_results_2.htm, the 13 men whose results are set out in light yellow are related to each other. Only 17820, 12573, and 25888 are descendants of William of NC. 9583, 11729 are descendants of James (m Margaret Anderson) and 22071, 22914, and 24782 are descendants of Adam (m Winifred unk).
These men are connected through a common ancestor farther back up the tree. It is absolutely MANDATORY that we discover which of the men up the tree is the common ancestor.
As soon as I get two sets of results that are way overdue in I will post them all to the website. We can't stop here; we must continue to find the links from America/Australia, or Canada back to Ireland or Scotland.
Please continue to recruit participants for the project but there will be no more matching funds from FTDNA to use. And we are just about out of money in our general fund.
Sharon

Hello,
I hope each of you had a great Christmas and are looking forward to a fantastic 2005. I had hoped to have DNA test results back as presents for a couple of you but it just didn't work out.
Well, today is 26 Dec and we only have until 31 Dec to use our last matching funds contribution. Are we going to have to turn the money back over to them or is there someone out there who's willing to be tested?
All you have to do is contact me, tell me who you're descended from (or even who you think you're descended from), I'll place an order for you which will give you a credit toward the total cost of the test. They will send you the kit and you can send in the balance when you return the kit. It can either be by cash (such as a check or m.o.) or you can provide your credit card information.
We have kits on their way to four new people for testing purposes and have five kits which are at the lab already. The more people we test the more likely you're to find a match. I'm continuing my quest to locate individuals in Scotland, Ireland and elsewhere who are willing to test.
I've also been in contact with a Dunbar who was aware of Janet Dunbar as Ninian Glendonwyn's second wife. He and I are attempting to locate more information on the descendants of that marriage.
Happy New Year 2005.
Sharon
Hi Bill,
I have a copy of the book but haven't completely finished it yet as I am concentrating on certain chapters for right now.
Another book which is recently on the market is DNA and Family History: How Genetic Testing Can Advance Your Genealogical Research by Chris Pomery.
If someone were unsure whether testing would help them I would recommend either or both of these books.

I thought I had found my James' family but from information just recieved from the Mifflin Co. Historical Society I'm back to square one.
Does anyone have documentation on:
James Clendennen, son of James and Isabella Huston? Birthdate specifically. From the tax records/orphan court records their son James was the eldest and an adult by 1781 when he owns his own land. If they (James/Isabella) married in 1765 their son would be 16 in 1781 unless he was born consideribly before the wedding OR the son James is a son from another marriage.
Files I've found state that this James Jr m. Polly Thompson and moved to Virginia and had no children. Is there records that show them in Virginia? What proof is there that he married Polly Thompson other than family letters.
I had asked the Mifflin county Historical society a specific question. When does the name James Clendennen drop off the tax lists for Fermanagh township and when does the Heirs of James Clendennin drop off. AND is there any record in property or orphan court as to the sale or transfer of this property. Well, today it arrived in the mail.

Dear Sharon and all,
I will send an email to Mary Clendenen and ask if they would be
interested in the Clendenin DNA project. Her father is still alive and
living in Arizona. His name is Robert Clendenin and he descends
through John Clendenin/Janet Huston as follows:
John Clendenin + Elizabeth (Caldwell?)
Samuel Clendenin + Cynthia Vasa
John Clendenin + Margaret Drew
William Francis Clendenen + Frances (Fanny) Marie Nosinger
William Francis Clendenen, Jr. + Laura Henderson
William Francis Clendenen, III + (can't remember
her name)
Robert Clendenen +
Best regards to all,
Mary Louise Townsend

The above URL is the address for donations to our general testing fund. We've used up pretty much all of the money that was there for testing. Until I hear something different the company is not going to match any more donations from us so it is all up to us.
How about making a donation to our general fund to keep the ball rolling?
Sharon

Hello,
A few days ago I indicated that our general fund could offer a savings on the testing for our surname project.
Well, we have now added three participants and I only have enough money left to offer two more people.
I really don't want this money to disappear the 31st but I do need, if at all possible, to test additional people on Charles of VA's line, preferably from a descendant of his sons William and Robert.
Is there no one out there? If you're not sure, let me know what your lineage is and we'll see if we can hook it up with something I have in my database.
Thanks,
Sharon
HAVING STUDIED HISTORY AND GENEALOGY ALL MY ADULT LIFE, I FIND IT EASY TO BELIEVE THE FOLLOWING ITEM. if WE TRACE OUR LINEAGE BACK FAR ENOUGH WE ARE ALL RELATED ALTHOUGH SOMETIMES WE WOULD LIKE TO SELECTIVELY CULL THE LIST!

From the Kansas City Star Nov. 2, 2004:
"According to Ancestry.Com, not only are Sen. John Kerry and George Bush related as 9th cousins twice removed, but both are related to Vlad lll, also known as Dracula or Vlad the Impaler, and apparently they're both related to Princess Diana.
Kerry goes back 34 generations to connect with Dracula, but Bush takes only 32 generations. Kerry is Diana's 12th cousin once removed, and Bush is Diana's 11th cousin twice removed."
