I just wanted to let everyone know that there is now a link from the Clan Douglas website to our website. Glendinning is a sept of Clan Douglas.

Dear Lola,
I have seen that the there is a will for Samuel Calhoon, December 1773.
There is also a will for Mary Calhoun, December 1805, in which she
leaves some of her estate to her 8 children (not named) and to the
estate of John Clendenin (her brother?) The links and references are
below. Do you have these wills or their probate records?

I was finally able to get a good email address for the webmaster of Clan Douglas. I have contacted him about putting a link on the Clan Douglas website to our Clendenin website.
His response was that he would do so asap.
Small steps but maybe we will be able to generate some interest in our surname project through that link.

I agree about the price being way too high and the value of the original. I
found my great grandfather's application which included his birthplace
town--the only mention I have ever found. And, it is a town now gone.
Interestingly, though, I had to prove that he was deceased even though he
was born in 1875. I wanted to be very sarcastic and ask where his benefits
have been sent for the last 74 years since his death, but they hold the "keys to
the kingdom." So, I meekly sent a copy of his death certificate.

This is just to let you know that any further discussion regarding our surname project should be addressed privately to me at SharonBryant(a)cox.net. Or if it is something that you think should be discussed or would be of interest to more than one person please use the special list set up for that purpose.
If you don't remember that email address contact me at the above address.

HA! I'm not sure about the price of the SS application if they extract the
information and send it to you on one of their computerized forms, (I think
$16 now??) but I KNOW for sure that if you want a copy of the actual SS
application that the person actually filled out at the time it is now at least
$27.00. The government realized in the past couple of years that this could be a
BIG moneymaker and they are taking advantage of it! I have ordered five of
these in the past year and I paid $27.00 each. They are worth it though,
lots of good information that does not depend on someone else deciphering it
correctly.

Don't forget that if you intend to make a contribution for future testing the matching contribution from FTDNA is only good until the end of the month.
The URL to make an on-line contribution is http://www.familytreedna.com/contribution.html.
We have had at least one contribution and I would like to thank that individual without divulging names. I appreciate your confidence and support in this project.
If you know someone, or perhaps yourself, who is hesitating due to the costs, we will have some money to use towards testing. Those tests, in order to use the matching funds, must be ordered by the end of December.
I know that these are tough times and there's always somewhere to put your money but any contribution you can make would be gratefully appreciated.

Hi,
Is anyone out there planning to attend the Highland Games in Richmond this coming weekend--Oct 23 and Oct 24?
Clan Douglas is not among the clans listed as being present.
We are considering going as my daughter and grandson have never been to a highland games and I would like to go to another one (one a long time ago and I can't remember whether it was on a trip to Georgia or one to Kansas City area).
Let me know. It might help me make up my mind.

This book "Born Fighting" was reviewed in the Cleveland Plain Dealer a few
weeks ago. Had excerpts from it in the Sunday section and looked to be pretty
good regarding the Scotch/Irish contributions to American society/culture.
Lori
Hi,
Last Monday I attended a Naval Academy Alumni luncheon where James Webb was
the guest speaker. That evening he had a book signing for his latest book.
"Born Fighting How the Scots-Irish shaped America." I have not had a chance to
start reading it yet, but from his talk it sounds like a must reading to get an
understanding of our cultural history.

More Court records……
What I am seeking by going through these records is to find some evidence of
Adam Clendenen. (Obviously, he is not cooperating!)
The earliest paper trail I have found for him is the 1774 Montgomery Co. VA
Preston Paper mention. At that point he would have been about 33 years of
age. He would have been documented in at least tax records if not court records
by then. As is seems apparent that he was not in the Augusta Co./ Botetourt
Co. VA area in the 1760s, then he had to have migrated into the area from
outside.
If anyone comes across any mention of an Adam Clendenen in the 1760s as you
are going through records from other areas, I would appreciate it if you
could let me know.
Thanks,
Cathy

From what I see:
A William Clendenin married a Rose Fisher in 1713. It is from a church
record.
Church Records in Killyleagh Parish, County Down, Ireland/and the will of
William show a William Clendenin as father to:
William christened June 1726
James christened October 1727 d. Ballyminstra Co. Down, 1788, m. Jane Reid.
Charles, 1730
Roas 1732
Alexander 1734 d bef 1793 m. Jane Irwin May 1, 1750 in Killyleagh
Missing birth/christening record but in will:
Jean
Elizabeth m John Morrow, May 19, 1755 in Killyleagh
Andrew
These are the assumed children of William and Rose Fisher. There is a James
listed but he appears to stay in Ireland, and there is a gap between the
marriage date and the first recorded birth date suggesting children who have died
unbaptized or lost records. Plus there is a discussion regarding whether
children were baptized after birth or when they were 12. Some researchers have
added children in this gap without proof, which leads to much of the confusion.
Since William of NC names a child Fisher and the name Fisher seems to repeat
in the family it has been assumed that the marriage record of William and Rose
Fisher m. 1713 are the grandparents.
RE: Family Bible Record - Bible printed: Dublin Ireland, pub. 1753 - who
wrote in the bible is unknown
From the transcripts that were posted here the 176? is not clear. Could be a
4. It suggests the children travelled that year, but doesn't prove the
father came then or not. He could have already been here or came later and it
doesn't state what sea. The bible record and will to me, suggests William of NC
had two wives the second one being Mary Ray. I know the general train of
thought is Mary Ray is William of NC son William's wife, but the way I read the
will of William of NC and the Bible Record I can't agree.
So, 1764 is a good a guess as any for travel year. When new immigrants came
sometimes they came with money, paying for their own passage and sometimes
not. If not someone here had to help them and they generally lived with them
for a while as indentured servants. So not showing up for several years in the
property records is not uncommon. Also, it took sometimes years to get to
where you wanted to finally set down roots as travel was slow, plus you have to
come up with the means to buy property, though this family seems to have
means/money. This William and a Charles show up in 1779 tax records in NC from what
I found. Someone else on the list more familiar with this line might have
something earlier.
William of NC m. 1 Anna "Mary" possibly Graham/Grammer have a son John b
1756. There are 3 wives for John and two death dates. There is a Rev. War record
for someone named JOhn Clendenin but he died in 1787 age 44 so b. 1743. The
other has a son Fisher and dies later. I've not sorted out which is the son
of William of NC, but my guess is its the one with a son Fisher. The other is
maybe the son of the Charles who came with William found in the tax lists - of
course no proof - but William of NC lists a Ann dau of John Clendenin
deceased as a niece. That John (REv War Record) is dead by the writing of the will
and does have a dau Ann ??? and if the son of say Charles she would be
William's niece. I'm not sure if there were two John's who served in the NC line
since both groups claim the same war record in the DAR. Again there is no "proof"
of which man is William of NC's elder son John.
From what I see, William Sr. of NC m 1 Anna "Mary" possibly Graham/Grammer
John "the elder", b 1756 Ireland
Andrew b 1757 Ireland - no further record
Charles b 1759 Ireland - no further record
William "the elder", b 1760 Ireland - listed in father's will left coffee
pot and spoons; POSSIBLY the one m. Sally Lile??? 1796
Rose b 1762 Ireland d 176? (4) at sea
