Hello Marsha,
In regard to your question about Mary Ann Patterson's marriage to
Charles...I'm sorry to say I do not have any direct info on that subject.
What I can tell you is that my Clendenin/Patterson family was in Lancaster
County, PA for some time. David Clendenin (son of John Clendenin and
Margaret Steele) married Mary Patterson April 11, 1811 according to David's
bible records. Mary Patterson was the daughter of James Patterson and
Leticia Gardner. From what our family can tell the Clendenin's lived quite
some time in this area... David's family was in Little Brittain, Lancaster
Co., PA. I have a list of the family etc from the bible and a list that was
written on a separate page of part of the Patterson family starting in 1758.
Would any of that help you? Also there is a Patterson family website I could
give you if you want, maybe they'd be able to help.
Happy hunting, Linda Mesinar

I probably have the same info as Jim, or nearly so. I know my info on
William and Rose is not right, someone sent me some new info but I never
had the opportunity to get into it, it was quite long. There were more
Williams or more Roses than I had, maybe someone can send a chart of just
the two generations in question with dates to clarify which William is
which. I would like to fix mine, I am going out of town for a week, and
then moving; after that who knows what I will find to do! haha

On looking at the information that I had printed out from Possum Jim's
website the other day to answer Cathy's question about John Clendenen &
Mary "Polly" McKinney, I realized how long it has been since I looked at
the Clendenin line.
I am presently back working on what I used to call he Clendenin
Massacre. I now am calling it the Cornstalk incident of 1763 as I have
become even more interested in the entire episode. I had the good
fortune to meet up with a descendent of the See family who were
massacred/captured at Muddy Creek just before Cornstalk and his men
massacred/captured the Clendenin family at Big Levels. I have gone on
to start looking at the next site which was at Kerr's Creek--Pretty
interesting stuff!
But back to the reason for this e-mail. I realized that Possom Jim had
earlier generations that I have not explored. My earliest Clendenin in
my data base is the Charles for whom Charleston, Wv is named. I am very
well satisfied that all of the people between Charles and me are well
documented. I would like to spend some time convincing myself of the
validity of the earlier generations on Possom Jim's website. In return
for any help that any of you can give me, I would be more than happy to
supply documentation for anyone that I might have in my files.
By chance, I am traveling to Pennsylvania at the end of the month--at
least I think that I will be going ... Is there documentation available
for the marriage of Charles and Mary Ann Patterson in Lancaster County,
Pennsylvania in 1735. Can anyone tell me where I might find some sort
of proof? I would be very happy to make copies for anyone who might
want a copy if there is a place to find such proof.
Is there documentation for the marriage of Rose Ann Kirkpatrick and
William Glendining in Dumfries Scotland? Is there documentation that
their children were: Jean, James, Rosa, Elizabeth, Charles, John,
Archibald, SR, William, Alexander, Andrew? Do we know that Charles and
Archibald, Sr. were brothers?
I would appreciate any help that anyone can give me. Marsha in WV
Greetings List,
I recently requested from the list if anyone actually has a list of all of
the children of John & Polly {McKinney} Clendenen. So far what I have
received has been everyone sending me links to Gedcoms which contain only the
available census information. Since that is all that I have been able to
find also, I may as well jump in with both feet and risk creating even more
confusion.
Please keep in mind that the following is all based on theory, speculation
and observation…I am not stating that I know this as fact. I am also basing
it on my own personal family & Bible records. Hopefully I will be able to
make this clear enough for everyone to understand.
My question is:
Has anyone yet considered or looked into the possibility that John Clendenen &
Polly {Mckinney} Clendenen could be the parents of Ancil R. Clendenen?
{The name Clendenen is being spelled this way simply because it is my
spelling and I am worn out from trying to keep up with all of the variations}
To my knowledge, the only information that provides a clue to the paternity
of Ancil R. Clendenen is the 1860 Annotated Boone Co. WV census. {If I am
wrong, please correct me} Sigfus Olafson, who by his own admission did not
keep a record of his sources, compiled the additional information provided in
that census after 1920.
My family records indicate that Robert & Martha {Anderson} Clendenen were
parents of the following children. The names I have also match up with 1810 &
1820 census records for Robert Clendenen.
John Clendenen b. abt 1796
Winnie Clendenen est. b. 1797-1798
Mary H. Clendenen b. 16 Sept. 1799
Archibald S. Clendenen b. abt. 1801
Robert Anderson Clendenen b. 08 Nov. 1802
Juliet Clendenen b. abt 1805
Dorcas Clendenen b. est 1806-1809
Nancy Clendenen b. abt 1810
Adam Clendenen b. abt 1811
Amanda Clendenen b. abt 1815
Elmore Clendenen b. abt 1817
Robert Anderson & Amanda {Hinchman} Clendenen were parents of the following
children, all born in Logan Co. VA except Sarah Jane. {From Mary Ann
Clendenen's Bible Records}
Mary Ann Clendenen b. 28 April 1828
Oscar F. Clendenen b. 20 Dec. 1829
William I. Clendenen b. 11 July 1832
Van Buren Clendenen b. 09 Feb. 1835
John Floyd Clendenen b. 11 April 1837
David Kemper Clendenen b. 04 Sept. 1839 {d. 27 Feb. 1841}
Andrew Irwin Clendenen b. 21 Dec. 1841
George Washington Clendenen b. 04 Dec. 1844
Martha Ann Clendenen b. 16 April 1847
Sarah Jane Clendenen b. 04 May 1849 {Cass Co. MI}
Note that Ancil appears on neither list.
There is an 1838 Logan Co. VA deed from Clendenen to Gore, which named "heirs
of Robert Clendenen, dec'd" {R.A. Clendenen, Adam Clendenen, Nimrod & Juliet
Farley, Alexander & Polly McNeely, James & Amanda Russell, & Elmore
Clendenen}.
Adam, Elmore {Elmore was a female, by the way}, the Russell's and Farley's
all migrated to MO in about 1841. Adam purchased his first land patent by
1843 and the Russell's had a daughter born in MO in 1842 and a son b. VA in
1840. I have heard that some records indicate that Adam was in MO by 1840
listed as a voter in Daviess Co. MO, although I have not verified this as
yet. I suspect that all of them were there by the early 1840's.
Archibald S. & John were not included in that deed for some reason, maybe
because they were already relatively well established and did not need to be?
They were both living in Mercer Co at that time.
The only other "Clendenen" left in Logan Co. after all of Robert A.'s
siblings left was Mary "Polly" McNeely. Other than that, the only "family"
around for Robert A. were the Hinchman's.
Robert A. & Amanda Clendenen's oldest son in 1840 was my gg-grandfather,
Oscar, and he was only 11 years old. The next oldest son was only 8. They
couldn't have been all that much "help" around the old homestead.
In 1840 Robert A. & Amanda have an extra unaccounted for "20-30" year old
male in their household who was not there in 1830 and who is not listed in
Mary Ann Clendenen's Bible record.
It seems to me had Ancil been a son of Robert & Martha Clendenin and in Logan
Co. VA in 1838, he would also have been named in that deed.
If he was the son of Robert A. and born illegitimate his mother had a whole 5
years between the time of Ancil's birth in 1822 and Robert's marriage to
Amanda Hinchman in 1827 to track him down and make an honest woman out of
her.
Ancil became well enough established and accepted as a "member" of the family
of Robert A. Clendenen in that area that at some point it seems that everyone
just assumed that he was a son. From what I can gather from the 1860
Annotated census, Sigfus Olafson began gathering additional information on
the early families listed in the 1860 census in 1920. He could have either
acquired his information verbally, as in someone telling him they believed
Ancil was Robert's son, or he could have found them both together in records
and assumed that since there were no other adult male Clendenen's in the
area, that Ancil had to be the son of Robert A. Clendenen. John and
Archibald were not present in that county to confuse the issue or cause
anyone to question the assumption. They were always in Giles/Mercer/ Wyoming
Counties, so why would anybody assume that Ancil could belong to one of them
when there was only one known adult Clendenen male in Logan/Boone Co.
All of my other research indicates that Ancil was accepted into the family of
Robert A. Clendenen, he married into the McNeely family, and traveled to MI
in 1848 with Robert A. Clendenen. Somehow I have trouble accepting that if
he had been illegitimate he would have been welcomed and accepted into the
family so readily.
From census records and other research I have been able to piece together
the following information on the families of John & Mary {McKinney} Clendenen
& Robert A. & Amanda {Hinchman} Clendenen. {I hope I have all of this right}
In 1820 JOHN CLENDENIN & Mary "Polly" {McKinney} CLENDENIN were living in
Giles Co. VA
1820 Giles Co., VA Census, Pg. 113:
John Clendenan, 1m 0-10, 1m 16-26, 1f 16-18
1830 Giles Co., VA Census, Pg. 215:
John Clendenan: 3m 0-5, 1m 5-10, 1m 10-15, 1m 30-40
1f 0-5, 1f 5-10, 1f 10-15, 1f 30-40.
1840 Mercer Co. Census, pg. 2:

1f 0-5, 1f 5-10, 1f 10-15, 1f 15-20, 1f 40-50
1850 Wyoming Co. VA, Dist. 71, Pg. 218
John Clendennen, 53
Mary Clendinen, 53
Julia Clendenen, 28
Arglon H. Clendenen, 24 {he is also marked as head of household}
Margra Clendenen, 19 { this is Arglon's wife, Margery, as they appear
together in 1860 &1870 Census records, not a daughter of John & Mary.}
Belinda H. Clendenen, 21
Elizabeth C. Clendenen, 19
Milton L. Clendenen, 16
Martha J. Clendenen, 13
{Note that the children are listed in descending birth order, all except
"Margra"}
Now back to the 1840 census. {There are no dates on these census pages to
indicate when the information was recorded.}
1840 Mercer Co. Census, pg. 2:
John Clendinen:
1m 0-5, Milton, age 5?
1m 10-15, Arglon, age 14
2m 15-20, Robert G., age 20, & ?_______?
1m 40-50, John, age 43
1f 0-5, Martha, age 3
1f 5-10, Elizabeth, age 9
1f 10-15, Belinda, age 11
1f 15-20, Julia, age 18
1f 40-50 Mary, age 43
=================
ROBERT A. CLENDENEN
1830 Logan Co. VA Census pg. 2
1m 20-30 Robert
1m 0-5 Oscar F., age ? mos. {b. Dec. 1829}
1f 20-30 Amanda
1f 0-5 Mary Ann, age 2
1840 Logan Co. VA
Robert A. Clendenen
2 m 0-5, David K. age 1, John F. age 3.
2 m 5-10, Van Buren age 5, William I. age 8
1 m 10-15, Oscar F. age 11
1 m 20-30, {could this be Ancil, who would have been 18?}
1 m 30-40, Robert A. age 38
1 f 10-15, Mary Ann, age 12
1 f 30-40, Amanda, age 31
Based on all of this information, it is my speculation that Ancil could have
been the son of John & Mary Clendenen and when all of Robert's family left
for MO Ancil was sent to live with Robert A. & family to help out.
In 1830 John Clendenin has 5 male children in his household, in 1840 he has 4
male children. It could explain Ancil's surname and his birth in Giles Co.
I have not done enough research on the family of Archibald S. Clendenen to
determine if Ancil could fit in there.
Anyhow, I hope this is not too confusing to understand and if anyone can see
any flaws in my "logic" ? please let me know.
Cathy O'Hare

Hi List,
Does anyone have any idea of who all of the children of John Clendenen & Mary
"Polly" McKinney were? The 1830 Giles Co. VA census shows:
3 m. 0-5; 1 m. 5-under 10; 1 m. 10- under 15
1 f. 0-5; 1 f. 5- under 10; 1 f. 10- under 15
Thanks,
Cathy
