I just took a walk through Ancestry.com and WorldConnect on Rootsweb.
I'm very upset when I see that some of you have taken undocumented
information and plastered it all over the Internet as though it's the gospel
truth.
If you want to do that with your Clendenins you go right ahead but PLEASE
leave my family out of it unless you can honestly document what you are
putting out there.
I have spent so much time and money trying to make sure that I could call
the RIGHT people my ancestors that this just makes me plain ill to my
stomach.

To Peter Glendinning, Glen Gibb, Betty Rossow, & anyone else interested,
The name Gibb rang a bell, and this is what I came up with. Probably not
what you are looking for, but I could not resist. I did not find a Peter
here, but this family of William and Sarah Gibbs (I've only three sons
listed) might well have come to Upper Canada on their own and left family
behind in Lower Canada. There is a Lanark Co. in "Canada West" which could
well have been on the way between Lower Canada and Oxford & Middlesex Co's
in "Upper Canada". I have nothing further on William Sr. & Sarah, but
would guess they were from Scotland or possibly more directly from England.

Could any or all of these be put on the web site?
I just came across some papers on the Clendenin Family, hand written and
hard to read but to some there seems to be a lot of information in it.
Since I have not delved into the Clendenin Family that much I would
gladly share this information. This information was written by Henry F.
Young who donated all of his work to a genealogical society for people
to research and copy. The original is with the genealogical society.
I own a printing shop so getting copies amounts to peanuts. I will be
glad to share with you if I have some mailing address's.

I have one rule of thumb when dealing with the Clendinens: I always resort
to Chalkley and in vol. 3 I find a Samuel Loge witnessing a
deed from John Cunningham and Robert Weir to Hugh Weir, 333 acres in
Borden's tract. Other witnesses were John Neill, Robert Reed, John
Mountgomerery, Samuel and Mathew Huston. page 402. Jun 18, 1763. With what
appears to be a 14 year difference in ages, this Margaret might have been
his second wife?<<

Hi 'Cousin' Dot,
Thrilled to receive your reply!
I never knew my grandfather or great grandfather, but I was given
information about them by my father and his brother and sister.
My dad's mother divorced Charles Wesley DENNING (1874-1957) before I was
born and then she remarried. She died in 1946 but never told me anything
about her first husband (I was only nine at the time of her death). I
received information about and photographs of him and some of his siblings
from my dad and his siblings.
I also received information about Charles Wesley DENNING's father, William
F. DENNING (1843-1927), from the same sources.
Much of the very general information I was given I have since been able to
verify with census, marriage and death records. I was told, for
example, that William F. DENNING's mother was a MILLER. This year I
obtained William F. DENNING's death certificate wherein his mother is
listed as Elizabeth MILLER and his father as William S. DENNING. I did not
previously have either of their forenames. I then was able to find William
S. DENNING (Abt. 1808-Bef. 28 Apr 1853) in the census below:
1850 MO Census, Jackson Co., Blue Twp., 05 Sep,
Dwelling 897, Family 897, p 294,
Denning, Wm. S. 46, VA, Stone Mason
Denning, Eliz 37, VA { Elizabeth (MILLER) RADCLIFFE or RATCLIFF }
Denning, Isabela 08, MO
Denning, Mary 04, MO
Denning, Wm. 07, MO { William F. }
Denning, Priscilla 02, MO
Denning, Angeline 01, MO
Radcliffe, Miles 13, MO
{ Elizabeth's son by prior marriage to unknown Radcliffe }
Source: NARA Microfilm M432-402
Note: Cannot explain why Wm. S. gives his birthplace as "Virginia".
Here are a group of conflicting Birthplaces for Wm. S. DENNING:
b. Virginia - 1850_MO Census - by himself
b. Pennsylvania - 1880_KS Census - by son William F. Denning
b. Pennsylvania - 1900_CA Census - by son William F. Denning
b. Missouri - 1910_CA Census - by son William F. Denning
b. Scotland - Death Certificate - by son William F. Denning
Then, in the same Missouri county not far from the DENNING household, I
found William F. DENNING's future wife, Louisa MORRIS, at age three:
1850 MO, Jackson Co., Blue Twp., 13 Sep,
Dwelling 1024, Family 1024, p 307A,
Morris, John M. 31, M, KY, Farmer, $320
Morris, Lucinda 27, F, MO
Morris, Josephine 10, F, TN
Morris, Isavilla 09, F, TN
Morris, Mary A. 08, F, KY
Morris, William 01, M, MO
Morris, Louisa 03, F, MO <----- Future wife of Wm. F. DENNING

After posting this new information for William F. DENNING's parents I made
contact with Mrs. Jane K. Ingram who told me that Michael Denning in
Gallatin, TN, had researched my line and gave me his mailing address.
I wrote to Michael and received a very nice reply. What little I know from
William S. DENNING back to David DINNING, Sr. (Abt. 1730-?), I have
obtained from Michael, with the exception of a few dates and some
collateral info obtained from on-line marriage records.
(Michael does not have a computer and writes in longhand.)
Michael wrote in his letter, "The title of my 1998 book was, 'The Denning
Family of Sumner County and Their Kin'. There are nine sections, including
female lines that total 842 pages. I have a copy and the Sumner County
Archives has the only other complete copy. The reason that I did this was
that in 1991 I had done another book on the Dennings called, 'The Denning
Family and Allied Families'. I had 125 copies printed and I sold them, but
it was a lot of extra running, so I decided to let people get what they
wanted from the Archives, because I am closely associated with them."
As you state in your E-mail, I too am anxious to get to Tennessee and talk
with Michael and be able to somehow obtain the applicable info for my line
from the 1998 book. Have you met Michael?
My wife and I are retired and live in Covington, Washington, about 30 miles
SE of Seattle. It's some distance for us to Tennessee but what the heck!
Back to the past again -
I was told by family that my DENNING family line originated in
Dumfriesshire, Scotland (no mention of Ireland) where they were known by
the surname GLENDENNING; that they came to the east coast of America in the
1700s; were "boat builders" (have yet to locate any boat builders); and at
some time in America dropped the "GLEN" from the name.
Some years ago while vacationing in Victoria, British Columbia, I stopped
in a tartan shop where a variety of books on clans and tartans were
available for perusal. There I learned that the clan GLENDINNING,
GLENDONWYN, GLENDENING, etc., was a sept of the clan DOUGLAS, and that
DOUGLAS and GLENDENNING were from Dumfriesshire.
For more on the surname see:
http://user.itl.net/~glen/glendinningorigins.html
After learning from Michael Denning that David DINNING came to America from
Londonderry I looked in my World Atlas and saw that a 150 mile boat trip
from Dumfriesshire across the North Channel of the Irish Sea would take you
to Londonderry quite nicely. The 1600s "Plantation of Ulster" resulted in
a great many Scots making the move and the forebears of David DINNING, Sr.
(~1730-?) were likely among the emigrants.
I then consulted one of our history books, "The American Heritage History
of the American People", pub. 1970, and found on pp 74-75:
"About the time when the Jamestown settlers were starving...Scottish
migrants were being settled on another 'plantation', in Ulster, for the
purpose of civilizing or at least containing the Irish...Certain of (Irish)
Lords had lately risen in resistance to England. They were defeated, and
their estates, largely in the northern counties collectively known as
Ulster, were forfeited to the Crown. Chichester (Sir Arthur Chichester,
Lord Deputy of Ireland) decided that the settling of 'colonies of civil
people of England and Scotland' on these lands would plant the seeds of
Protestantism and fidelity to London in the tough Irish soil."
"So it was done, and by 1641 approximately 120,000 Britons had been
'planted' in Ulster. The great majority of the settlers were Scots, not
Englishmen, and were variously called Ulster Scots, Ulstermen, Scotch-Irish
or Scots-Irish, and sometimes (especially in immigration records and to the
confusion of history) simply 'Irish'."
"From Cromwell's era through the Glorious Revolution, Ireland was
constantly a battleground of Protestants and Catholics. The Ulstermen won
bloody victories in Enniskillen and Londonderry over forces loyal to the
Catholic James II."
"Then at the moment of Protestant victory, the English government turned
against the Ulstermen, who had begun to establish themselves as successful
farmers, dairymen, sheep raisers, and weavers. English landowners and
merchants secured the passage of laws forbidding the importation into
England of Irish beef, meal, grain, wool, linen, woven goods, and many
other manufactured items. The ports of Ireland were excluded from any sort
of participation in the profitable colonial trade. Prices fell drastically
in Ulster, and landlords attempted to make up the loss by raising rents. A
calculated policy of keeping imperial profits exclusively in the hands of
English merchants tightened the screws of adversity on the Scotch-Irish,
and as depression fell like a rain of iron on the land, they began to swarm
to America."
"The movement was heaviest between 1717 and 1785, with occasional peaks in
years of bad harvest and consequent famine. Around 1750 it was estimated
that nearly 12,000 Ulster Scots were reaching just Pennsylvania each
year. For 1771-73 the total lay somewhere between 25,000 and 30,000, not
including a heavy inflow from Scotland proper."
...
"But to the southward the younger colonies...the Carolinas begged for
settlers, and the Scotch-Irish flowed readily into the so-called Great
Valley running from NE to SW which forms a trough in the Appalachians from
which rise the rivers that flow down to the sea in Pennsylvania, Maryland,
Virginia, and the Carolinas."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In Michael Denning's last letter he says, "I got to thinking about where I
saw the Glendenning name and then it came to me. Several years ago I was
at the Simpson Co., Archives, in Franklin, Kentucky, and I glanced at the
'Clendenning' file. Here are some notes that I took down from the file:
'The CLENDENIN family is of Scotch Highland origin and comes from Glen
Donwin, the original home of the family in Scotland. ...The CLENDENIN
family came to America from County Down, Ireland, in the early summer of 1764.'
"I believe our family could have dropped the CLEN when they came to America
from Derry County, Ireland, in 1762. There was a William CLENDENNING in
the old North Carolina records, who lived on the Haw River in Orange County
near our DENNINGs. When the DENNINGs moved to Sumner Co., TN, in the fall
of 1799 there were two branches of CLENDENNINGs, one lived in the southern
part of the county, and the other lived in the northern part, where our
DENNINGs settled."
Michael included an eleven generation chart of the GLENDINNING line from
1286 to 1630 which seems to be the same family found in the URL I noted
earlier in this message. Michael said, "Maybe if this is our branch we can
link them to our Andrew DINNING who was born in the 1730s, I hope this is
not just wishful thinking."
Our family, on both sides, is rife with names like Zella known as "Sally",
Patrick known as "Park", and the ever popular Mary known as "Polly". All
the records I have been able to locate for my great grandfather, William F.
DENNING, (except the 1850 Census where he is a 7-year old) show him with
the middle initial "F" (for which I have never learned the associated name
- if any). Now that I have received information from Michael telling me
about many William DENNINGs I believe he may have been insisting on the "F"
to distinguish himself from all the other Williams.
Incidentally, William F. Denning was a very colorful character from the
records I have found - and the stories related to me by family. That is a
chronicle on it's own and too long to present here at this time. Later
perhaps.
In your E-mail you mentioned your line including:
"William D. DENNING, b. 31 Oct 1772, m. Jeane BOYLE"
Found this marriage record which appears to be his:
Cannot help but wonder if Jeane and Elizabeth are sisters who married
brothers. Is there a preferred spelling for the sisters (maybe) surname?
You also mention that:
"Andrew had other sons:
David b. April 9 1816 d Feb. 1850
John b 1761 Ireland M Elizabeth Boyles (Boles) 1781"
John fits fine but David doesn't seem to fit this family - he's too late -
Margaret his mother would have been about 74! We show Andrew (Abt. 1735)
with a daughter Rachel, no date; John Abt. 1761; and your William D., 31
Oct 1772.
We agree that the Revolutionary War David is ours - at least that is what
Michael Denning has told us - and that he is Andrew's brother.
Any chance of obtaining a copy of the pension application from you?
If anything we said here doesn't make sense please let us know - we're not
always right!
We do not as yet have any land records for North Carolina.
Michael says our David came from Londonderry per his pension application.
This is really long - but understanding all this stuff is hard enough and
putting it down on paper seems the only way to keep it reasonably coherent.
My lovely wife, Pat, is a great help in keeping me thinking straight! We
work together on both our family lines and keep our files in Family Tree
Maker v 7.5.
