Hello list,
My name is John Clendenning. I am researching my ggg grandfather in
Ireland. This is what I know. If anyone has any information about this
branch of the family I would appreiciate hearing from you. I can't seem to
find the parents of John Clendenning. An uncle told me the town John's
family lived in or near in Ireland was Pettigoe. Owen Sound is in Ontario
Canada. Thank you.

OBITUARY OF JOHN CLENDENNING Died September 14, 1913
Friday of last week saw the passing of one of the sturdy old early settlers
of this part of the country. Mr. John Clendenning who resided at 635
Seventh Street East since his coming to Owen Sound only about three months
ago with Mrs. Clendenning, after spending sixty-eight years on the one farm
in the neighborhood of Hoath Head in the township, that is in point of the
number years continuous residing on the one farm or within the one township
for that matter. Mr. Clendenning was a native of the county of Fermanagh in
the old Emerald Isle being born there ninety-four years ago. He came to the
new land when quite young. In 1845 he came to Owen Sound, then the village
of Sydendam and took up his farm at Hoath Head. He was one of the first to
take up land in that settlement which is now one of the most prosperous
parts of the county. He cleared the bush and carved a comfortable home and
a competence for himself from the virgin soil, enduring the hardships of
the early settler with the stiff upper lip characteristic of the Irish
immigrant to the new land. When Mr. Clendenning first came to Owen Sound
there was nothing, but a few log shacks in the neighborhood of the market
square. While a prominent man in the township of Sydenham, Mr. Clendenning
was of a quiet disposition and did not seek public honors. However, he was
the first postmaster at Hoath Head, his farm being opposite the present
post office. He was also county constable up to the time of his death. He
was married to Mary Jane Rusk, of Ruskerviller, near Greenmore, who
survives him. Two sons, William John of Marquette, Michigan and Wesley of
Owen Sound, also survive Mr. Clendenning. He was a faithful member of the
Methodist church and a member of the Orange order for over half a century.
and until his death took no little interest in Orangeism and its work. He
was a dean among Orangemen, and rightly held in the highest esteem and
respect by everyone. In politics he was a Conservative. The funeral took
place on Sunday at Greenwood Cemetery.
