The following letter may be of interest to some of the Clendenin family. George Gaddie married Margaret, daughter of John and Mary (Sympson) Clendenin Dec. 3, 1807 in Green Co., KY. They had two children: Sophia and Beauford. Margaret died in the fall of 1813 in Randolph Co., IL. Gaddie returned to Kentucky with his two children and two slaves. In 1835 the son Beauford visited his Uncle Harvey Clendenin in Illinois. While there he died (possibly of typhoid). The letter was in the hands of Nancy (Clendenin) Mann until she died and then owned by Nancy's granddaughter , Mildred Midjaas. Mildred gave me a typed copy, certified by Sister Teresa of Avila (a notary) in St. Louis.
Green County, Kentucky October 27th 1835
Dear Sir,
On yesterday I received your letter dated on the 24th August bearing the information of the death of my son. This news is truly the most heart rending of any that has reached my ears for some time though upon reflection we know that all living must die and that he has paid the debt of nature. We all must shortly do the same though had he been with me I think I would have been more resigned to the will of him who rools (sic) in the hour of death though I have no doubt that you all paid every attention to him that lay in your power for his recovery. As to the property he left I request of you as a friend and relation to retain the horse saddle and cloathing (sic) in your own hands sell the cow collect the money discharge all just demands against him and if there is any money left after his debts are paid retain that also.
Madison Hubbard expects to come out between this and the first of December next to arrange bisness (sic) as the nature of the case may require. My family at this are in good health. Unkle (sic) Sympsons family at present are all well. Hoping these few lines may find you all enjoying the same blessing give my best respects to all my relations in that country, yours most respectfully
George Gaddie
On the back of the letter, addressed as on an envelope was the following:
Campbellsville, Kentucky, Oct. 27th (in the return portion) and Mr. Harvey Clendenin, Kaskaskia, Illinois, Randolph County (in the addresee space)
The 'Unkle Sympsons' family was William and Rebecca (Clendenin) Sympson.
Hi Norm,
The Clendening line is my husband's but I have done all of the research. Our Clendening line is: Dorothy Clendening, James Curren Clendening, William Curren Clendening, Thomas Clendening and James Clendening. I am not certain about Thomas and beyond. We were in Sumner County in 1998 and I met a lady in Franklin, KY who was also a Clendening and Anglea decendent. She provided me with the info but I cannot be sure of the accuracy since she is elderly and has had a stroke.
I have James and Betsy's certified marriage record from Sumner County with a date of June 10, 1789. Anthony Bledsoe gave them 520 acres. James will identifies his children as Anthony, Thomas, James, Rachael, Patsey, Eliza and Sally. James and Betsy probably had more children but since many of Anthony Bledsoe's children were killed by Indians I assume that some of James children were also killed. The will was signed March 3, 1820. Betsy died in 1808. James and Betsy's gravesite is just east of the Bledsoe Fort which is a few miles east of Gallatin. There is also a Clendening Cemetery between Shackle Island and Hendersonville. I took a lot of pictures but haven't placed everyone yet. The
reference indicating that this James is the son of William is: Historical Southern Families, Vol 3 (Bodie 1958).
When at the Salt Lake Library last summer I found The Clendening Family and another book on the Clendenings. The first book was strictly about Charles from Ireland. The second book contained info on James. Unfortunately I cannot locate the one on James - wouldn't you know it.
The history books of Sumner County state that Anthony Bledsoe was the most important man in Tennessee's history. Also, that Anthony and James were long hunters.
I still have a lot of research to do on this family but would appreciate any help you can give me.
Rancho Murieta is 25 miles east of Sacramento in gold country.
Talk to you later,
Joan

He could have married Betsy Bledsoe because in TN. he was living on Bledsoe Creek if we have the same James. There is also a Cate Bason that married a James on March 18, 1802 which hasn't been identified. I'm sending for James's Will, unless someone has a copy that they will share. We should be able to identify wife and children from his Will. I've got three wives and two sets of children in some documents that could possibly be James. I still believe Charles (b. 1759 son of Old William) is a major key in sorting out the children and marriages.
> I found James selling 2 acres of land on April 6, 1796 which we can speculate that this was his inheritance from Old William which was half of the 100 acres that Fisher and he divided at Mary's discretion. I don't think that we can believe that Old William died as late as 1800-1801. Getting a Will probated could have taken several years from Old William's death and there are several examples of this and in some cases the widow had already remarried before the probation of the Will was final. It's my belief that he died before 1796, but have nothing to prove it.
> I have copies of 3-4 RV War back pay vouchers from 1779 to 1783 for Old William in regards to furnishing supplies to the military, thanks to Donna. This also has him living in Hillsborough District, Orange Cty. NC and was selling agricultural supplies which means he was well established in farming.

Hi Norm,
I have some info on your query.
Charles Clendening, married to Cauley Honeycut, was b: 1802 in Belfast, Ireland d: 20 Oct, 1876, age 74. Cauley or Polly was b: 1806 in NC d: 26 Dec
1877. Cauley had two daughters, Minerva and Martha, from a prior marriage. The children of Cauley and Charley were: Mary Jane, William Charles, Jr., and
Tabitha. Info on Charles and his decendents can be found in a book entitled The Clendening Family.
I believe the Thomas Clendening is the son of James Clendening, husband of Betsy Bledsoe. James and Betsy had the following children: Anthony, Thomas,
James, Rachael, Patsey, Eliza and Sally. James is the son of William Clendening who moved from Ireland to Orange Co., NC about 1765. The will of James
Clendening can be found on the Sumner County usgenweb site.
hope this helps.

If any of you are new to genealogy, note the various spellings of names, sometimes in the same entry. This is very common up into the 20th century.

Can anyone identify these Clendenins from the early Sumner Cty., TN marriage records and their line.
I think there is a association with James Clendenin (b.1770 in NC) of Sumner Cty., who would be is the son of William/Mary of Hawfields, Orange Cty.,NC.
Also, the younger brother of Capt. John Clendenin (b. 1756 d. abt. 1787) of RV War and resident of Sumner Cty., but John only had two daughters.
Charles F. Clendening married Polly Frazier on 16 Nov. 1833
John Clendening married Margaret Frazior on 24 August 1829 wit. William Kirkpatrick
Charles Clendenning married Cauley Honeycut on 15 Oct. 1832 wit. Hugh Johnston
Thomas B. Clendenning married Elizabeth Frazor on 5 July 1824 wit. Joseph Kirkpatrick
William F. Clendining married Mary A. Latimer on 22 Oct. 1849
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know the children of Sam Brown?
Could he be father of Permelia Brown who married John Bowyer?
Permelia Brown's mother was a Cantrell. Any thoughts on her too?

Norm, You might check with Anita (Clendenin) Enquist of Warm Springs, GA.
She published a book several years ago about some of the southern branches
of the Clendenin clan. You can probably find her address through Hotbot or
Alta Vista.

Charles, I haven't spent much time with the William Clendenin line, but
many of the descendants of William and Helen (Fowler) Clendenin living in
Texas have a lot more info than I have. Among others: Mrs. Howard Johnson of
Round Rock, TX and J. D. & Margie Clendennen. I'd be surprised if some or
most of them don't monitor this net.

Gary per your request for a copy of the Draper MS document, my microfilm
reader doesn't have photo copy capabilities. This was a rental film (AGLL is
not allowed to sell Draper MS films). I just copied the info and reference
as follows: (William Preston papers Draper MS 6QQ 156)
Recd of Wm. Preston, three pounds, five shillings in full for James
Clendenen's (sic) pay for March, April and 4 days in May 1759 & in full of
all accounts before this date I say recd by me on 14th day of July 1759.
Charles Clendinen (sic) his mark
Testee Thomas Gilliam
(note the two different spellings of the surname, not at all unusual for
those days)
Gary, Mildred Midjaas gave me a copy of her grandmother Nancy's
handwritten history upon my promise that I would not pass it on. Mildred and
I both knew of several errors in it and Mildred was determined not to
propagate errors. Nancy only states that William, brother of John and
Rebeccah, continued on to Missouri.
Sandy, I believe you asked about the John Clendenin family in the 1810
census. You know, I'm sure, that censuses before 1850 only listed the head
of household with the rest of the occupants listed by sex and age, not name.
The 1810 Randolph Co., IL, Mary's Township lists: Page 215, line 9

Males 1-10 1
Males 17-26 3
Males 27-45 1

Females 45 and up 1

Males 21 and upward 1
All others 4
Line 24

Sandy and others: Mary Sympson was born in Pennsylvania Aug. 3, 1760 and
died in Randolph Co., IL in the fall of 1813 of what I think was typhoid.
She is buried on the family farm just north of, and partially, within the
city limits of Chester, IL. I would have to do some digging to tell you
where I got the birth date. I think it was from David Sympson of Louisvile,
KY who gave me Sympson Bible records.
Don
Sandy in Florida and others:
Yes, Rockwood, IL WAS a river town until the mid 19th century when a flood
changed the river channel to about a mile west of the town. I think that was
the flood which also washed away old Kaskaskia graveyard.
