Well, personally, I'd just as soon they came from Ireland since that's from
whence the Rudds came and it makes a bit more sense. However, you read the
letter written by May Clendenning. Her husband, Campbell, was the son of
Caroline's brother, Andrew (the 3rd?) and Elizabeth Topping. That makes
Campbell a grandson of Andrew Jr. I'm not sure why he was known as "Uncle
Andy"; each of his brothers had 3 children so it's not like there were more
kids running around calling him Uncle than Grandpa. Bill Bradley, who was
Anna Clendenning's son (from Andrew Jr's 2nd marriage) also said they came
from Scotland in 1840. So, that's 2 grandchildren who knew him when he was
alive who say he came to Canada from Scotland. And, Andrew Jr, Caroline's
father, had 2 wives, not 3. May Clendenning and Bill Bradley KNEW Andrew Jr
(Uncle Andy) and would have been very aware of how many wives he had,
particularly since he was Bill's grandfather and May's grandfather-in-law.
Furthermore, Bill and his wife, Ellen, were in possession of Andrew Jr.'s
family Bible and he only had 2 wives recorded in it. Other than knowing my
great great grandfather was Andrew Jr., (I guess I should have figured out
his father was also Andrew), knowing his mother is Elizabeth Bell is
certainly new information for me. And, although May and Bill knew of the 3
brothers who went to Canada (Wm., Joshua, and Andrew), there was no mention
of the sibs left behind in.............Scotland or Ireland. It's beginning
to look like these 3 brothers took off to make a living, leaving other sibs
and parents behind in Ireland, trying out Scotland first and then going to
Canada. Blast it!! I wish he'd told them where he'd been born because I
can tell you I spent many hours with these people and they firmly believed
their grandfather was Scots. Thanks to having access to Andrew Jr.'s family
Bible, I do have the birth dates, marriage dates, husband/wive's names, and
children's names of ALL of his 14 kids by both wives. I'm not sure this is
of much interest to you, though, since you're descended from his sister.
But, what you've got about Andy's parents and his OTHER sibs is very much of
interest to me because I couldn't get past him and his 2 wives in Lansdowne.
So, I'd really like to know of all the children of Andrew Sr and Elizabeth
Bell. I'm not in a position to dispute they were born in Ireland, but I
think we have to be open to the possibility they didn't stay there, or, at
least, we know 3 of their sons did not stay there. I can't see any way
grandchildren who knew Andrew Jr. could not know where he lived before he
went to Canada. At least he and his 2 brothers were in Scotland. Maybe
they didn't find what they were looking for and hopped on a boat for Canada.
Our other records from the family Bible agree. Andrew Jr. did marry Marie
Bowen in 1845 and he married #2, Margaret Cochrane VanEvery on April 6,
1863.

I have my ENTIRE Rudd genealogy back to 1770 (every single Rudd born from my
direct line ancestor) thanks to D.S. Bill Rudd in London, Ontario. He went
to Ireland in the early '80s and spent several years tracking down every one
of us. He found me through May Clendenning. He, too, went to Lansdowne
hunting in the cemeteries and the phone book within months of when I first
contacted her in 1973 and she put us in contact with each other. He
eventually went to Ireland in 1981 or thereabouts and got the whole shebang.
William's father, George, was married to Jane (Susan) Bradley and Hannah
Graham. They are both buried by him in the Lansdowne cemetery. I took
photographs of their tombstones. George was the 4th child of Anthony Rudd
(b. ca 1771) and Mary Shaw (they had 7 children). I believe all 7 children
were born in Clone, Co. Wexford. The only one I'm not sure about is the
7th, who was born in 1818, since I don't know whether they took ship in 1816
or 1820. There is a document out on the web that shows Anthony reserved
space on a ship to Gananoque for himself and 7 others in 1816; baby James
wasn't born yet. Bill Rudd, the researcher, was descended from James.
Somewhere in my massive collection of correspondence with him I'm sure I've
got his ancestor's birth place. William was born in 1845. His father,
George, was actually born April 6, 1810......in Clone, Ireland. George had
6 kids with Jane and 2 with Hannah and was considered a "very successful
farmer" in Lansdowne. But, he had too many kids for the farm. As you know
from May Clendenning's letter, his farm was broken up and Bill Bradley, a
Clendenning, ended up with a piece of it.
There are a bunch of Bradleys marrying both Rudds and Clendennings if anyone
is looking for a Bradley branch. But, to end this little book, yes, PLEASE,
send me what you've got about Andrew Sr and Elizabeth Bell and ALL of their
kids. It truly never occurred to me they had more than the 3 boys. And,
I'm irrationally excited to know they started out in Ireland because my
Rudds are Irish and it makes it all tidier some how. I'll have to get out a
map to see if Armagh is anywhere near Wexford. I've long thought my Rudds
fought on the Royalist side in the Rebellion of 1798 (in Wexford) and that's
why they left town, so to speak. My understanding is the Crown gave land
grants to loyalists on "vulnerable" borders after the Napoleonic wars and
the French/Indian war. Gananoque/Lansdowne was very much a vulnerable
border in 1816 when my Rudd ancestor signed on to ship out. But, the 1840
arrival date for the Clendenning brothers is far too late (I think) to have
anything to do with that, but it might have something to do with why maybe
their parents might have left Ireland earlier and gone to Scotland. I'm
hoping to spend a month in Ireland next year to try to sort this out. This
gives me something else to search for now.

Hi Ellen
I found an 1891 Census of Leeds Front Ont. and found Joshua Clendenning
son of William Clendenning born 27 May 1812 and son of Andrew & Elizabeth
Bell Clendenning stating that his father William being born in Ireland;
and also Andrew Clendenning born (1822-1823) and SON! (1) of Andrew &
Elizabeth Bell Clendenning stating that his father and mother were born
in Ireland!.
Connie
Hi Ellen,
I have your Clendenning Family also, except that I have them born in
Ireland and not Scotland, although they would be considered Scots-Irish.
I only go back to Andrew born 1795, Ireland and his wife Elizabeth Bell
born 1793, Ireland and then on down with oodles of info on descendents. I
come through Mary Clendenning, their daughter married to William
McConnell Sr. My Mary would be a aunt to your Caroline and sister to
your Caroline's father - Andrew (born 1822) married (about 1845) to
Margaret Bowen - Caroline's mother (b. 1828). Caroline's father -
Andrew (1822) also had two other wives). Hope this is not too confusing!
I have corresponded with many people on this line and all say Ireland for
the birthplace of Andrew (1795). Someone gave me Ireland as place of his
marriage and also birthplace of the first 3 children of theirs, so I
think it is fairly correct. Someone stated possibly Armagh Cty, Ireland
as birth place, but I will have to go over my voluminous files to see
about that.
I also have William J. Rudd - age 26 at marriage on 24 Jun 1872 in
Leeds, Leeds, Ontario so figured born about 1846 to George Rudd born
about 1823 of Lansdowne, Leeds, Ont and Jane about 1825 also of
Lansdowne. I don't have their birthplaces.
Let me know if you need anything down from Andrew & Elizabeth Bell.

This information is copied from the Clendenning family Bible that was in the
possession of Mrs. William (Ellen) Bradley in 1973 in Gananoque/Lansdowne,
Ontario. I met her, her husband, and Mrs. C.H. (May) Clendenning when I
lived in Watertown, NY, just over the St. Lawrence River from Gananoque.
Mrs. Bradley provided me with a box full of photos of all these
Clendennings. I also have the marriage dates of most of them and who they
married and where they went.
My great-grandmother, Caroline, married William James Rudd, also of
Lansdowne, on 3/24/1872. They emigrated to Big Rapids, MI, and had 4
children: Byron Stafford, George Wesley, Mary A (known as Mae), and Vern
(who is my great-grandfather). I know the entire Rudd lineage if anyone is
interested. Vern married Charlotte Irene Keyport (Kyburz), my grandmother,
and they had my father, Robert Keyport Rudd, who married Betty Marie Cook,
and had 3 children, the youngest of whom is ME!
We know Andrew Clendenning came from Scotland. I know nothing past him and
very much want to.
Letter written October 18, 1973, by a very very elderly Mrs. C.H.
Clendenning recording the family story of the emigration from Scotland:
"As you can plainly see, by my family tree [she sent a large personally
designed family tree which I cannot duplicate in an e-mail], the early
settlers had not year heard of the 'population explosion'. Not being the
methodical chronicler that you evidently are, I am sending all I know about
the Clendenning line, not having so many dates as I would wish. The
Clendennings coming as a family from Scotland around 1840 settled near
Lansdowne. The members we know about were 3 sons Wm, Joshua, and Andrew Sr.
(Uncle Andy). These 3 young men took up 400 acres of land, all solid wood
at that time. They built a cabin and for some income, cut wood and hauled
it to the newly opened C.N. railway with wood burning engines. The trains
stopped at Cliffes' Crossing and loaded on their fuel supply. In the spring
the lads made maple syrup and sold it in Gananoque. One spring, a factory
opened in Gananoque and offered the fabulous wage of $1 a day for help.
Well, who could resist such wealth, so Wm and Joshua left their 16 year old
brother (Uncle Andy) to live in the shack and boil down the maple sap.
Frequently he heard wolves howling outside his cabin at night. Eventually
the land was cleared of wood and the farm was divided among the 3 boys, who
all married Lansdowne girls. I believe I told you that I had written to
Bill Bradley, one of the few surviving of Campbell's cousins [her husband
and the husband of the woman who gave me all the photos]. Well, he (73) and
his wife came right over to see me (I am 82 and no longer drive a car).
They had some pictures from the attic, one you will be pleased to know of,
Caroline Rudd and a small daughter [my great-aunt Mae and all these photos
are now in my possession]. She looks thirtyish and very sweet and gracious.
The picture is quite clear and could be reproduced I am sure. There was a
Bryan Rudd, about 20 years, also a rather dim photograph of Margaret Hare.
They had photos of several of Bill's and Campbell's cousins, unusually
attractive, but not dates.
Apparently, Aunt Annie, Bill's mother, saved many old letters and deeds.
One letter, dated 1895, was from a husband named Delemator (Michigan) to
Uncle Andy telling him that his wife Mary Clendenning had passed away. They
have very little information concerning the Rudds. The Bradleys live on
part of the land once owned by the Rudds. He has an old deed, which states
that Wm and Isabel McDonald sold a Block of 300 acres of land to Henry and
Eldon Rudd, from Ireland, over 100 years ago. [My Rudd ancestor emigrated
from Clone, Co. Wexford, around 1820.] As both families were Methodists
(later United) the church in Lansdowne village may have a record of the
ministers at that time. In a little history of our local church, there
appears the names of prominent families assisting in the building the church
in 1894. Cliffes, Bradleys, Rudds and Clendennings. The little chart which
I am sending under separate cover may give you a jolt. As you see, Uncle
Andy was twice married the first marriage producing 8 children. When his
wife died, young Andy was 4 years old and Caroline was 11. His second
marriage to a young widow with a little boys Wm and Edward VanEvery,
produced 5 children, one of which was Bill Bradley's mother Annie. You
mentioned the attendants at Caroline Rudd's marriage, so one of the widows
son's was William. They lived of course with their mother until they were
young men, then went to the States. A grandson of Edward VanEvery visits
here occasionally.
Now I hope that I have completely confused you with my meandering, but the
family tree which I am sending may clear up things a little. Oh, yes, I
forgot to mention that there are 3 local cemeteries and Uncle Andy and some
of the family are buried at the Cross cemetery. Billy Bradley may know
where some of the Rudds are buried, perhaps at the Union, near Lansdowne.
You should be here and we would visit Bradley's attic. He says there are
old photographs of groups of all the families.
Sincerely, May Clendenning"
I was only 22 when I first married and moved to Watertown. Knowing my
ancestors had lived just over the river, one of my first w/es, I drove over
the bridge and went to the town hall. There was a huge land platte from the
mid-19th century and I saw the plots of Rudd and Clendenning farms. I also
went to all 3 cemeteries and photographed all the Rudd and Clendenning grave
stones. There were no Rudds in the phone book, but I did find May
Clendenning. I called her and she invited me right over. This letter was
the result of that first visit; she wrote it to my mother who was then the
family genealogist. I made many subsequent visits, meeting the Bradleys and
being given the gift of this box of photos, most of whom are NOT my
great-grandmother, Caroline, but are of her sibs, although there are a
couple of total family photographs with all the children as adults and with
Andrew Sr. and his 2nd wife. I continued to correspond with May Clendenning
and Ellen Bradley (Bill's wife) until they all died just a few years later.
Being so young, I never thought to ask WHERE in Scotland they came from, but
I'm surprised my mother did not. I do know who most of Andrew's kids
married and their marriage dates (and the women's married
names.......including Cliffe and Hare).
So.........................is anyone on this list descended from Andrew or
one of his two brothers (Wm and Joshua) and can you get me back to Scotland?
Thank you.
Ellen Rudd (please don't forget the mentioned web site)

I'm a new subscriber. Before I post my lineage, is there anyone else on here descended from Scots Clendenning/Clindinnings? My great grandmother is Caroline Clendenning of Lansdowne/Gananoque, Ontario. She married my great-grandfather, William Rudd, of the same area. They moved to Big Rapids, MI, in the late 19th century. The family spelled the name both ways; no consistency. I have a fair amount of information re: Caroline's ancestors who emigrated from Scotland to Ontario, but nothing back past the emigrants. So, before I post the lineage, is there anyone else researching this line?

Does anyone have info on McNeely-Clendinen connection?
I know that is vague. i am sorry abt that. Just curious if McNeely sounded
familiar to any of you Clendenin researchers.

If you're searching for a naturalization record for a female ancestor,
you may be out of luck. In the past, naturalization laws for women
were very different from those for men because women did not have the
right to vote, and as such, had no "reason" to have citizenship. A
woman's rights came through marriage or through inheritance from a
male relative.
An 1804 law said that if a man died before final citizenship papers
were granted, his wife and children were automatically given
citizenship. An 1855 law stated that any female alien who married a
U.S. citizen automatically became a citizen.
If a woman was not married, she had to wait until she was 21 before
filing for citizenship. If a husband and wife became citizens at the
same time, the wife's name was not included on her husband's
paperwork.
Many researchers wear themselves out trying to find naturalization
records from the 1700s. However, they need to remember that there were
no naturalization records before 1776, because Americans were
considered English citizens since America was the property of the
English Crown.
There were, however, thousands of immigrants from other countries who
were not subjects to the English Crown. In 1740, the British
Parliament enacted laws that allowed the colonies to naturalize aliens
who had lived in the colonies for at least seven years. Immigrants
from England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland were not considered aliens.
On June 6, 1776, the Continental Congress passed a law that granted
the right of naturalization. Records of these early naturalizations
are kept in the county courthouses in the Clerk of the Court's office.
Hello folks
I am desperately seeking information on Alexina Jane Knight Anderson born
around 1910 in Glasgow. Alexina married John Scott Glendinning born 1903 in
Glasgow and died 1986 in England. They had five children, Barbara, John, Ann,
George and Margaret. Alexina died in 1956 in her early 40's My mum is sick,
and she would love to hear any details of her mother's or father's family, and
so far I am just drawing blanks :(
I would be so grateful if these names ring a bell for anyone, to let me know.
Thank you.

I recently made an acquaintance with someone who descended from a
FORTUNE-CLENDENIN marriage. Though this is not in my Clendenin descent,
they asked if I would help them get to the right place. Does this
marriage/connection register with anyone? It sounds familiar, just can't
place it myself.

Good morning,
I found the following on a website. Thought it might be interesting to some
of you. Note that Jno Glendenning was not indentured.
_______________________________________________________________________
The Elizabeth & Anne was being used in the slave trade at the time of the
1715 Jacobite rebellion. It's merchant owners thought they might be more
highly rewarded by handling the "transport" of prisoners for the King. The
arrangement was to take the prisoners on consignment and receive payment
when a receipt for their delivery was presented to His Majesty's Court in
London.

*These prisoners were probably some of the followers of the Pretender
captured at Preston, and condemned to be transported to the Colony in
Virginia, after having been carried to London for trial.
SOURCE: CALENDAR OF VIRGINIA STATE PAPERS 1652-1781 Vol I, pages 185,186
Formatter's notes:
The Captain's sworn statement originally appeared following the list of
prisoners.
This document is typed as written. Words were spelled as they appear
here. The letter 's' is sometimes written as 'f', as was common
in colonial times. I replaced the 'f', or 'long s' with the letter 's' in
surnames.
________________
Additional information was published about these prisoners in the "Calendar
of
Virginia State Papers" and in "Scottish Notes and Queries"
Correspondence 4/29/00:
If you are researching any of the Jacobite rebels, please note this
valuable research information submitted by Mr. Williams, the contributor
of this list:
The following is extracted from my files re the trial of the 1715
Jacobite rebels:
The record of the trial for the rebels captured at Preston is at the
Public Record Office, Kew, London. The lists and indictments of the
rebels of 1715 is identified as KB8/66. It is described as "Special
oyer and terminer rolls and files, including informations and
depositions", and is filed in two boxes. The box labelled "Part 1"
contains seven folders or bound manuscripts, of which the folios
have been numbered in a single series, ff. 1-132. The other is a
very long box because some of the documents are three or four feet
long. It contains Part 2 (ff. 133-201) and Part 3 (ff. 202-254).
Each folder bears the heading: "A list of ye Rebell Prisoners at
[place], showing their Christian Names and surnames the Parish and
county they dwelled In." {You may recall my alleged ancestor was
captured at Preston so the Preston folder was of most interest to
me. Too bad, my alleged ancestor was not in it. However, the
Chester folder, where the trial was held, had four surnamed Kerr
including my alleged ancestor.} {The prisoners were clearly tried
in groups except for the most prominent persons such as the Earl of
Derwentwater.} {These records are all written in Latin.}
I found a book published in 1895 by George Routledge and Sons,
Limited titled "Preston Fight or The Insurrection of 1715" to be
both informative and pleasant to read. Reviewers say this book is
historically correct. I got a copy via interlibrary loan.
Jacksonville University Library provided the copy I read.
