Hi Jack,
The information you have forwarded is of interest to me. Can you tell me
from where did you obtain your information about Adam and Rebecca? My
interest comes from that their son John Clendenon is my direct ancestor.
Are you aware that the family at that time were Quaker and the records are
exceptionally good for genealogical purposes? One item of note is that the
Quakers did not use the dates as we know them. For example I have
researched the Quaker indices and have found Rebecca's birth to be as
follows:
1st day of the Twelfth month 1662/3. This is not December 1 as we know it,
however, February 1. The new year started as of March 25. Robert's birth
is as follows: 5th day of the Third month 1703 (being 5 May).
I do have one other question - Do you know of an Adam Clendenon buried in
Lancaster, Pa in 1717? I am also interested to know what his relationship
to Robert is?
I look forward to hearing from you.

My father, Byron Arthur Clendinning (Jr) was born in Macomb MS. His
father (BA Sr) was also born in Mississippi. His father, Arthur Gallagher
Clendinning, was reputed to have come south from Lancaster County PA, but
was an inveterate liar, so no one, to my knowledge, has any information
prior to that.
Cheers!

Connie,
My name is George Anderson (b 1931) and I live in Akron, Ohio.
My direct ancestor, Alexander Clendenin (1763- 4 Aug 1845) (m. Margaret
1756- 30 May 1840) immigrated from Ireland about 1800, arrived in
Philadelphia, moved to the Cumberland area and then to Lawrence County.
His daughter Jane married John Anderson Sr.. Alexander is also buried
along side his wife in Hopewell Cemetery at New Bedford, just outside of
Newcastle, PA. Alexander was the Constable of Mahoning tp., Lawrence
County in 1819.
I cannot find anything about our Alex except the deeds to property, his
will, naturalization papers and the fact that he emigrated from County
Derry.
Would appreciate any help that you could give me

I descend from James A. Clendenin through his son Thomas G. to his son,
James Sylvester. My maternal grandmother, Thelma Clendenin, was the
youngest daughter of James Sylvester. The children of Thomas G. Clendenin
were: Burton by Charlotte Ripley. Children by Louisa Asbury were:
Pleasant S., James Sylvester, George Frank (never married), Alva Alice, John
Walter, Virgil Lee, and Charley (never married). There was also an unnamed
male born April 1, 1886 that must have died soon after. I have posted more
extensive information on Rootsweb's World Connect Project. The information
was compiled from census, birth and death records, and family interviews.
If anyone has any additions, corrections, or questions, please let me know.
I would be happy to share any further information that I have. Penny
May be helpful to some of our Canadian cousins.

Hi there, yes I have tried to connect Adam to the family of Robert and Alice.
Jack Stewart is a desc. of this family. I agree with you about the names.
Robert and Alice had a son named Isaac. I haven't been able to connect him
here. Remember that Adam could have a brother named John.
Jack, please resend your line. Thanks, Debby
I have been gone and am just now reading the e-mails...and responding to
the roll call.
My name is Marsha Moses and I live in Huntington, WV.
Like Sharon I am a descendant of Charles Clendenin (d circa 1794).
However I descend from Charles's son (Mary Ellen's brother) William. I
still live less than an hour from Charleston WV where Charles died and
was buried--I am sure that everyone on the list is aware that Charleston
was named after our Charles Clendenin. Someone prod me in the next two
weeks as I remember hearing that The First Presbyterian Church in
Charleston has some sort of documentation that its beginnings go back to
our Clendenins....surely I could not have made that up. I have two
brother and sister-in-laws who attend that church. I should follow up
on that research. Marsha in Wv

I descend from Juliet Clendenen who married Nimrod Farley on 10 August 1822 in Pike Co., KY. Juliet, b. c.1805, was the daughter of Robert and Martha Clendenen. Robert was the son of Adam and Winnifred Clendenen.
It appears that a great many people are of the opinion that Adam was another son of "old Charles," of Charleston. I have seen no record that names Adam as a son of Charles, nor have I seen any evidence in any record that supports that allegation.
Has anyone entertained the possibility that Adam was connected to the Clendenens of Chester Co., PA? There was a Robert of East Marlborough, Chester Co., PA whose wife was possibly Alice. One of his known children was named Isaac. There was at least one family of Adams in this same area. In the Virginia records Adam was occassionally spelled with an "s" on the end (Adams). Was his given name possibly from the surname Adams? Adam named one son Isaac, another Robert, and a daughter, Alice. Is this merely coincidence?
I am not saying that Adam was not in some way related to Charles and his sons, only that one needs to keep an open mind to other possibilities. As we all know, the mere incidence of individuals sharing a surname, in the same location, at the same time period, who were in no way related, is certainly not uncommon.
Incidently, Robert and Martha's son, Robert A. married 13 July 1827 in Pike Co., KY to Amanda Hinchman, and moved to Michigan about 1847/8. Robert and Martha's son, Adam moved to Daviess Co., MO, where he is listed on the 1850 census with wife Mary, son Nathan, and his sister Juliet's son, James Thompson Farley. Robert and Martha's daughter, Amanda, married James Russell, and they moved to Missouri probably at the same time as Adam and Juliet and her husband Nimrod Farley.

Hi, My name is Robert V. Clendenen, and my Clendenen line is through Burton
Thomas Clendenin, son of Thomas Gory Clendenin(of Mason and Jackson Co. WV)
who is the son of James A. Clendenin and Rebecca Lewis. We believe James A.
is the son of Charles Clendenin, Sr., who mar. Nancy Ball and is son of
Alexander, son of Charles(Charleston WV namesake). James A. Clendenin mar.
Rebecca Lewis who we believe to be the dau. of Lucinda Clendenin who mar.
William Lewis, making James A. and Rebecca cousins. This means that several
of us on this list are doubly related. BTW Thomas Gory Clendenin mar. Louise
Asbury, not the mother of Burton, and therefore Burton had several half
brothers and a half sister in the Charleston area.

Rejection Claim
Clendenin Adam,
Papers delivered to Delegate from Logan Co. 16th Dec. 1835
Revoluntionary War Rejected Claims, card 33 of 123. Electronic Card Indexes.
Library of Virginia.
When I wrote to the Library of Virginia to try to locate these papers [which
would prove alot] I was told that all the info in his file was what I had
sent. Really need these papers.
Also, remember that the George Washington papers states that Adam had a
brother John. I lost my copy of this, does anyone that I sent it to have it?
The Adam and Robert Clendenins from Logan need to be researched. Robert was
at one time sheriff of Logan County. Adam, Robert and Robert Sr. lived there.
I believe this is where Robert Sr. of Giles and his wife, Martha died. Adam
moved to Mo. I believe to Daviess County. I think that both the Robert and
Adam above are sons of Robert of Giles. The answer to Adam could lie in info
these two guys.

My name is Nancy Elliott, daughter of Thelma Marie

father was John Floyd (Floid) Clendenen b. 22 Dec. 1860

was Oscar Floyd Clendenen b. 20 Dec. 1829 in VA--d. 7
Mar 1870 in Silver Creek Twp., MI. His father was
Robert A. Clendenen b. 8 Nov 1802 in VA---d. 17 Sept
1851. The next name I have is his father---William
Clendenen and that's it.
I am new to researching and won't have alot of time
until I make a move in the Spring. I live in Woodstock,
GA and will be moving to VA. I am saving every bit of
information put out by the list. I do have some
information starting in Scotland that is hard to
decipher. I hope to make the connection of my MI
relatives back to VA and beyond. Thanks to you of you
who are so willing to share.
This should be in the parish lists on the website, but at least you now have
more details.
