Births Death Marriage Records on the Net - UK

ENG-WESTMORLAND-L(a)rootsweb.com
Hi Listers,
Next month in Parliament, the Labour MP for Upminster, Keith Darvill,
will present a Bill before the House of Commons to put all records of
birth, death and marriage on the Internet. If successful, it will mean
that we do not need to be charged £6.50 each time we want to look up
each paper. Instead we will be charged a token fee.
I do not know more than that it was in one of today's Sunday tabloids
(The People, page 33), but I certainly think it would be worth
supporting. I intend to write to Mr Darvill offering him my support
and will urge my own MP to support Mr Darvill's Bill when it comes
before the House.
Your MP can be contacted at : House of Commons, London SW1A 0AA. If
you are unsure who your MP is you can find out with your postcode at
this web site:

In a rather simplistic approach to locating the John Clendinen/Janet
Huston descendents and ancestors, I've been doing some research as to
what a "Covenanter" minister is. The Rev. Cuthbertson who baptised
John, Samuel and Katherin Glendening (Clendinen) was sent to America in
1750 by the Synod in Scotland. For lack of a better term, Covenanters
were a "sect" of Presbyterianisn. The Silver Spring Presbyterian
Church, established 1734 in Silver Spring Twp (formerly East Pennsboro)
was not of this persuasion. Which is probably why we cannot find
Clendinen baptismal/marriage/death records there. Apparently there were
several splits among Presbyterians in America and then reunifications.
Later generations of Clendinens in Cumberland Co., did attend Silver
Spring Presb. My ancestor, Samuel Clendinen (1791-1867) joined
Reformed Presbyterian churches in Ohio which were the "successors" to
many Covenanter churches.
I've been trying to identify Covenanter locations in Dumfries, Scotland
but haven't had any success yet.
Mary Louise Townsend
This is what I have on John Clendinen and Janet Huston Clendinen. It
comes from the Jeremiah Zeamer file (circa 1900) in the Cumberland
County Historical Society (Carlisle, PA).
"John Clendennin1 married Jennie Huston who was a sister of Samuel
Huston who married Isabella Sharon. John aClendenninand his wife Jennie
Huston came from Scotland. He came from Dumfries. He died in Silver
Spring township gaed 93. His wife died three weeks before he did."
Children:
John2: married Elizabeth (*Caldwell)
William: killed by Indians
Margaret: died unmarried
Jennie: died a young woman
Anne: married Bradshaw
Mary: married Calhoun
Katie: died young
Isabella: married John Rankin**
Samuel: married Polly McBeth, Wellsville, W. VA
James: married Isabella Huston, his cousin
**margin note says that Isabella married Archibald McCullough on 20
January 1791 at the 1st Presbyterian Church in Carlisle, PA by Rev.
Robert Davidson.
What I have been able to verify is this:
1. Source: Register of Marriages and Baptisms performed by Rev. John
Cuthbertson, Covenanter Minister, 1751-1791. Index by S. Helen Fields,
published Washington, D.C. 1934.
a. At Canandugwient Creek (also Junkin Tent) 21 August 1751, baptised
Jo., son to Jo. Glendining
b. 14 April 1754, baptised Sam., son to John Glendining.
c. 21 March 1758, baptised Katharine, daughter to John Glendening.
2. Will of John Clendinen1 (as spelled in will) of East Pennsboro was
dated 29 August 1783 and proved/probated 25 April 1796. Will mentions
wife, Janet, sons John and Samuel, sons in law mentioned but names not
given. A part of land is adjacent to John Dickey's land. John
Clendinen made a "mark" to sign his name.
This will is found in Will Book F, page 81/82 (DF 395-96)
John Clendinnen2/Elizabeth (*Caldwell)
Children:
John (28 September 1782-23 August 1852) married Martha Waugh on 31
December 1807 by Rev. Davidson in Carlisle, PA.
William (1785-1835) married Mary Wallace
Isabella (2 February 1790- 18 February 1845) married Francis Eckels
James died young?
Nancy married Samuel Huston
Polly (Mary) married John Patterson
Jennie married John Woodward 8 May 1794 by Rev. Davidson
Elizabeth died young
Kate died young
Samuel (17 October 1791-18 March 1867) married Cynthia Vasa (Vassar)***
***Samuel Clendinen married Cynthia Vasa on 24 August 1816 in Warren
County, Ohio per court records.
3. I can find no marriage record to date for John2 and Elizabeth.
Zeamer's file calls her "Caldwell" as in aunt to former Vice President
John C. Calhoun largely due to a letter which says she was the aunt to
John Calhoun (not further identified). There were several Calhoun
families in Cumberland County. The Elizabeth Caldwell who was the aunt
to the V.P. was born 15 October 1757. I find it very unlikely that she
married John Clendinnen in 1771 at age 13. Other research on this
Elizabeth Caldwell (1757) has her married to Robert Gillam in South
Carolina and died/buried on 29 December 1851 in S.C.
4. The will of John Clendinnen2 was written 18 May 1802 and
proved/probated on 7 August 1802. It mentions a wife, Elizabeth (not
further identified), sons, John, William, Samuel (minor) and daughters
Mary, Jean, Agnes, Elizabeth, Catherine, Isabella (minor) and Janet.
This will is found in Will Book F page, 315-318 (DF second series
72-74).
5. Two newspapers, the Carlisle Herald and Kline's Gazette dated 1 July
1802 and 30 June 1802 respectively say that John Clendinen, Esq., of
East Pennsborough Township died last week after a long and tedious
sickness. He was a patriot of 1776.
6. As for the death date for Elizabeth Clendinen (wife of John2). It
is between 1810 and 1820. I found an 1810 federal census record for her
in East Pennsboro Twp., Cumberland Co., PA. The names in order of the
census sheet were: James Waugh, Jonathon Huston, John Martin, Samuel
Huston, Elizabeth Clendenen, John Clendinen. There was no entry for her
in 1820. There was an 1820 entry for an Elizabeth Clendenin in Dauphin
County but the children were under 10.
Hope this helps. I know there are others on the list who have the dates
for their ancestors from this list.

Okay, could you sent a list for each family? thanks, if you use family tree
maker try the outline, how to below
Sandy in Fla
Family Tree Maker is a versatile program but most people don't realize they
can send several different types of charts as well as a quick and easy
outline via email, [without the need for attachments, which are the bane of
the Internet]. The outline is by far the easiest, all you to is click on
outline, click on contents, items to include, choose name, all three dates
[b,m,d] in location, spouse's father/mother, take out the short default date
or you will have double dates, click on contents again and choose 2 or 3
generations, don't send people 10 generations down to your grandchildren
unless they ask, besides it is a bad idea to send out so much personal
information to strangers. Then just click on edit and copy the outline, and
simply paste into email. You only have to choose items to include the first
time, the program remembers this the next time.
There are 3 charts you can create but these must be copied, pasted to word,
cut from word, and pasted to email which seems like a lot of work to me when
the outline is so easy, but
Click on GEN REPT, click on format and choose one. Click on contents and
choose options, you don't have to include the notes, which makes a shorter
chart, then choose 2 or 3 generations. Also if you put your source notes in
the text you don't get all those numbers after the names of each person.
First is the register style which prints the entire name in ALL CAPS and
skips lines between most people, this form takes up a lot of space and the
all caps are hard to read.
Second is a much better form called the NGS format, which is descent ordered
and prints a nice compact list of children, then in the second gen. lists the
children that you have more info on and their children. It is by far superior
to the register style.
Third is the ancestor chart which does just that, prints out ancestors, you
can choose how many generations, again it is best to choose only 2 or 3.
Family Tree Maker is an amazing program and every six months or so you should
skim through the manual to see if you can learn something new.

This is great News... I will take note of this fact... I also wanted to pass

rotterdam to Philadelphia.. I will have to check my records on what date it
was... I think it was in 1700's... This could be Steve's John...
Cyndy Clendenen
Hi Steve,
I wish I could help you out with more information about these two men who
emigrated from Ireland to Canada but that is all the information I have at
the present time.
Now as for the other question: We know (can prove) that the William
Glendunning who was baptized 16 May 1680 in Langholm Parish, Dumfriesshire,
Scotland was the son of another William Glendunning who was listed as
William "of Castle." No mother's name is listed in the parish records.
There are three other males born/baptized in the same parish in the
preceeding 9-10 years all listed as sons of William "of Castle." I have a
photocopy of the page from the parish records.
The closest marriage preceeding these four births is that of William
Glendunning and Margaret Glendenning in 1670. I surmise, based on this
information, that William of Castle was married to a Margaret Glendenning,
probably a cousin, and the four boys are her offspring.
What we don't know: We do not know for sure that the William baptized in
1680 is the same man as the one who died in Co. Down, IRE in 1764.

Hi Sharon,
I am interested in this little tidbit. My ancestors were from Ireland located in the area of Mountrath, County Leix and emigrated to Canada in October 1821. They settled in Prince Edward County, Ontario and lived there through the 1820's . The family was John and Elizabeth with son William ,
daugthers Mary(Maxwell), Sarah, Elizabeth and Margaret. The family to which you refer
is unknown to me so any help is appreciated as I am trying to look
for a connection.
There was another query I had, however, I deleted the information a
little too quickly. I think it something to do about William's
parentage in Scotland around the 1680's. If you can remember this
I would appreciate a reply.
Thanks,

Hi everyone,
We're safe and dry. I decided not to leave when they did not begin mandatory
evacuations. There are basically only two ways out of this town--one by the
Hampton Roads Bay Bridge and Tunnel and the other that takes you through
small towns on a 2-lane highway towards Richmond. I didn't see any viable
options. Oh, there is a third way--across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and
Tunnel which takes you to the DelMarVa peninsula. But that thing is 18 miles
long over the Chesapeake Bay and I don't like it on a sunny day.
Just wanted you to know we made it okay.
Thanks for the prayers and good thoughts.

Definitely get away from Floyd, he is HUGE, I am on the west side of Fla and
we have lots of wind, and our school and hotels are full of folks who had the
good sense to get away
Sandy in Fla
I'm sure you've all been keeping track of Floyd. Well, it kind of looks like
he's headed my way (for those of you who don't know I live in Norfolk, VA).
The Navy has declared a Condition 3 which means damaging winds within 48
hours.
I just wanted to let you know that depending on what God wants Floyd to do,
I may evacuate. I'll back up what I have on the computer but everything else
will stay because there's too much of it to pack up and haul with me. I hope
you all have copies.
For the rest of you who live on the East Coast and may have this unwelcome
guest, be safe and God bless.

Magazine of Virginia Genealogy published by the Virginia Genealogical
Society, Volume 37, Number 3, August 1999, pp 169-176 contains an article
entitled "Virginia Settlers in Champaign County, Ohio." The article explains
that during the compilation of an index to the early probate records of
Champaign County several items were found which identified the principal as
being a Virginian.
The article continues by saying that many of the county histories which
sprang up in the late 1880s only listed a state of origin but not a county.
The same is NOT true about the 1888 History of Champaign County, Ohio done
by Beers. Therefore, the author compiled a list of those persons mentioned
in the History of Champaign County who were credited with originating in a
specific area of Virginia.
