Does anyone know any info on Thomas Clendennin, any time between 1800 to ?
Very elusive.

Hi List,
I just prepared the following message for my Bundy and Doudna lists,
and I thought you also might find it interesting.

Hi List,
In response to my earlier posting, several persons have asked me about
how to access this website to get the descendancy of Ramses II, etc. I
will include the information below. In the past, I have always accessed
this site via the general service called Gendex, which is at:
hhtp://www.gendex.com:8080/
This is a comercial service but allows unregistered users. I have never
registered and I have never had a problem using it. But one can go directly
to the specific site. This site is:
http://www.gendex.com/users/Enf_Bry/Enf_Bry
(where it is Enf_Bry)
This puts you into the web pages of Enfield/Bryant, but from here you go to
the master list and trace out what you want. When you enter the other way,
you have to pick your way trough about 20 - 30 entries for the same person,
filed by different contributors, with different formats, etc. This is also
useful, for one set of entries may supply data that another one leaves out.
Once you find a person you are interested in, there should be a little
table at the top of the data presentation under his/her name giving any of
4 pieces of informtion, if they apply, such as:
John Stanley (Knt; Sheriff of Anglesey)
18th Gt. Grandfather (in Red, showing owner's relationship)
18th gen. desc. of Alfred 'The Great' (in magenta, showing this lineage)
20th gen. desc. of Charlemagne (in Blue, showing this lineage)
93rd gen. desc. of Ramses II (in Purple, showing this lineage)
The actual lineage goes many generations further back than Ramses II.
There are also extensive history summaries available by clicking on the
highlighted geographic name, or family groupings, from 3 to 40 or more
generations by clicking on the highlighted family name. There are also
extensive notes filed and available by clicking on Notes.
If these are not enough, I have several more sites put up by specific
surnames with extensive royal contents:
1. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gumby/genweb/Winch/Winch104.html
2. http://www.my-gcd.com/royals/
3. http://www.northrim.net/humphri/surnames.html
4. http://localsonly.wilmington.net/~ggreeen/JohnTSur/surnames.html
5. http://www.my-ged.com/surnames/dills/A
6. http://familytreemaker.com/users/c/h/e/Larry--Chesebro/index.html
7. http://web0.tiac.net/users/pmcbride/genweb.html
8. http://genweb.net/gedcom/Raven/Raven.html
9. Wales emphasis
http://members.tripod.com/~Caryl_Williams/index-2.html
(where it is ~Caryl_Williams)
I am sure there are others of equal or greater value, but these are all
I currently know about, other than major services such as Gendex,
WorldFamilyTree, Ancestry and FamilySearch. If you know of any other
good sites, I would appreciate your letting me know so that I can add
them to my list for the future.
All this should keep you busy for some time.
Best Wishes, Bruce Wood
I have another thought that this Joseph was James A. and Rebecca Clendenin's
son! Someone else had given me info on a Joseph and Mary Hawkins but This
other one I found matches the census records better !
Descendants of Joseph Benton Clendenin
1 Joseph Clendenin b: July 15, 1841 d: May 09, 1918 in
Somerville, Robinson District
+Unknown
*2nd Wife of Joseph Benton Clendenin:
+Frances Edwards b: October 16, 1842 m: Bet. 1857
- 1870 in Jackson Co., (W)VA d: August 20, 1924 in Somerville,
Robinson District
Can anyone think this is too?

Am doing research on Clindist-Clinedinst. Like to know the org. of the name. Charles E. Clinedinst was marry to Mary V. Bryant, think it was in Pa., Va. Far as I know they had three girls [Thelma-Sis-Ruth and brother Frank or john] They both die in Baltimore in late 50-70.
0-70.
Hi Steve and Bruce,
I have checked out Myers, Albert Cook. Immigration of the Irish Quakers
Into Pennsylvania, 1682-1750. Cited on pages 374 and 375 is a letter written
to Joshua Pim by Thomas Pim who lived at Tullylast, Co. Kildare in 1768. In
the letter he refers to "the abstract of the monthly meetin records of
births and burials of Mount Melick Monthly Meeting, which abstract, so far
as relates to Mountrath meeting is mostly in my handwriting. I suppose it is
in the hands of John Clendenon."
I don't know if this will help or not, but at least it gives you an area in
Ireland where there were known to be Quaker Clendenon families along with a
date. The footnote states that Thomas Pim resided at Mountrath until 1735,
then went to live with his son in Co. Kildare and died a few months after
writing this letter.
Hope this gives you some clues.
Sharon

Hi Bruce,
I have taken a little time to review what you gave me, plus look at
my records for my direct line. Here is my earliest unbroken line
and I'll try to explain my problem. Much of this was found in the
Quaker digests of which copies are kept at the LDS centre in Salt
Lake City, Utah. Film numbers are 571396/571397/571398.
Descendancy is as follows:
Adam Clendenan - no information!!
married Rebecca Cope circa 1695
in Mountrath, County Leix, Ireland
(She is a daughter of Robert Cope and Mary ?? who came
from Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, England in the 1660's)
Children -
John born 3rd day of tenth month 1695, Mountrath, Offaly
died 12th day of second month 1741, Mountrath
Isaac born 14th day of eleventh month 1697, Clonkeen, Offaly
died ? day of sixth month 1733, Mountrath
Deborah born 5th day of fourth month 1699, Clonan, Queen's
( I have her death date someplace - not recorded officially)
Robert born 5th day of second month 1703, Cappagh, Tyrone
( I have his death date someplace - not officially recorded)
I am descended from John and have all the information even to the
crossing of the ocean in the 1820's from the monthly meetings.
For those of you who do not understand the terminology of the
dates, the Quakers did not believe in the days of the week or the
months and also started the year as of March 25.( If the day is
incorrect I apologize).
Here is my problem - I am trying to track down Adam and who his
parents were. From the quaker digest information it states Adam
Clendenan and Rebecca Cope were married by a Priest in
Mountrath, Ireland in 1695. This tells me that they married outside
the Quaker faith yet the records tell me all the children and the
descendants remained Quakers. From information that I have and
also read there is the suggestion that Adam was a son of William
at Castle in Scotland. A cousin of mine had written a book that
suggested that the Adam in Scotland in the 1691 Hearth Rolls and
the above Adam in 1695 are the same person. I have looked at
this and am not convinced it is so. However, there is the
possibility this is so because I have read about a Clendenan
teaching school in County Tyrone around the same time
suggesting he came to visit. I have also considered the time frame
and the political situation of the time as a possible reason for
leaving Scotland. I have also considered that the family was in
Ireland for at least one or two generations. In Canada the family is
well documented and I have done research at our local Quaker
resource which is Pickering College in Newmarket.
I hope this information is of some help to you and I am looking
forward to your response. If you need a reply from me I'll be away
from June 30 until July 14.

I was looking through passenger lists that came into Philadelphia!
I found on "Prosperity" from Isle of May on August 29, 1806
John Clendening
Elizabeth Clendening
On another boat but now I can't find the date . I think it was the same year
though:

Sharon,
I don't have access to my copies of the original census records right now. Unfortunately, I'm in the middle of some reorganization.
As to Charles being the wrong age to be the son of Alexander, please note that in 1850, when he was living with Andrew and Lucy C. Lewis, he was 65 years old, born about 1785. In 1860, C. Clendenning, living with W. M. Clendenning, is 70 years old, born in 1790. Makes you wonder if he knew what year he was born, or if someone else gave the information and that person did not know his birth year, or if, indeed, this is even the same Charles Clendenin. Certainly, I don't believe the age of Charles in the 1850 census rules out Alexander as his father.
Also, so far as I know we just have circumstantial information that Lucy C., the wife of Andrew Lewis is the daughter of Charles and the sister of William M. Clendenin: 1) the deed for personal property from Charles to William and Lucy naming them his son and daughter (however this evidence does not make her the same Lucy C. who married Andrew Lewis), and 2) the 1850 Census of Putnam Co. showing Charles living with Andrew and Lucy Lewis. There is even flimsier evidence for Joseph/James being the son of Charles, i. e. the proximity of their homes in the 1850 census.
However, at this point I'm postulating that Charles is the son of Alexander, and that James A., William M., and Lucy are the children of Charles. I'll continue to search for evidence to prove or disprove this theory.
I'm going to WV soon and I plan to research Mary or Nancy Ball and James Ball. Her name often surfaces as a wife of Charles. Also, I plan to look for a cemetery in Young Hollow in Jackson Co. is reputed to be Charles' grave site. This area of Jackson is very close to the area of Putnam where William M. lived.

If you visit the website in the next few days you may not be able to connect
to the GED2HTML files that are there. While working on those glitches, I
realized that I had a second GEDCOM that I had done with those names which
had definite overseas connections.
I am in the process of combining these things into one larger GEDCOM. It is
going to take time to upload that to the site.
Hang in there with me.
Thanks,
Sharon
P.S. By the way, I will be out of town next week and therefore will not be
answering any messages as I will not have the capability to connect. There's
a possibility my oldest son and his family will be visiting over the 4th.
Haven't seen my grandkids since February - can't wait.
Charles Clendinen Jr. Information
Charles Clendinen Jr. first showed up in 1820 Census of Mason county,
Virginia.
Charles Jr. in 1820 Census in Mason Co., (W)VA
1 male (over 16 and under 26) born 1794-1804 (This would be Charles
Jr.)
1 female ( over 10 and under 16) born 1804-1810
Probably got married between 1810-1820. Since he didn't have any children yet
it was probably close to 1820..
Charles Jr. in 1830 Census in Mason Co., (W)VA
2 males (over 5 and under 10) born 1820-1825
1 male (over 30 and under 40) born 1790-1800 (This would be Charles
Jr.)
2 females (under 5) born 1825-1830
1 female (over 20 and under 30) born 1800-1810 (This would his wife)
I first thought Charles Jr. was the son of Alexander Clendinen but after I
checked Census Records of 1810 and 1820 for Alexander Clendenen I discovered
that he could not have been.
In 1810 Census of Mason County, (W)Virginia
Alexander Clendenen was over 45. He had listed:
2 males (under 10) born 1800-1810
1 male ( over 10 but under 16) born 1794-1800 (could be Charles Jr.
but not)
1 male (over 16 but under 26) born 1784-1794
1 male (over 45 and up) born before 1765 (This would be Alexander)
1 female (over 10 and under 16) born 1794-1800
1 female (over 26 and under 45) born 1765-1784
Alexander did have a male born between 1794-1800, so Charles Jr. could have
been his son but the next census determined that he was not. I check if
Alexander had a male born between 1794-1800 missing in the next census. This
would happen if the male left to have his own family.
In 1820 Census of Mason County, Virginia
Alexander Clendinen (over 45)
1 male (over 10 and under 16) born 1804-1810 (missing one from
previous census)
1 male (over 16 and under 26) born 1794-1802
1 male (over 45 and up) born before 1775 (This would be Alexander)
1 female (under 10) born 1810-1820
1 female (over 16 and under 26) born 1794-1804
This showed that there was 1 male missing from the census of 1810 Census but
it was a male born between 1804-1810 instead of a male born in 1794-1802.
Alexander still had a male at home who would have been Charles Jr.'s age.
Charles Jr. was head of of household in 1820 so Alexander was not his father.
Who else could have been father of Charles Jr.? Maybe Charles Clendinen Sr.
was his father but in Mason County in 1820 Census he did not have a male
listed who was born between 1794- 1800. Charles Sr. first showed up in Mason
County in 1820 Census at the same time Charles Jr. showed up.
1820 Census of Mason County, Virginia
Charles Clendinen Sr.
1 male (under 10) born 1810-1820 (#2 son)
1 male (over 10 but under 16) born 1804-1810 (#1 son) (? John)
1 male (over 26 and under 45) born 1775-1794 (This would be Charles
Sr.)
3 females (under 10) born 1810-1820 (#3, 4, 5 daughters)
1 female (over 26 and under 45) born 1775-1794 (This would be his
wife)
There were no sons listed born between 1794-1804. So Charles Jr. was not
Charles Sr.'s son either.
I do know that in 1830 and 1840 Census, Charles Sr. was still in Mason
County, Virginia.
In 1830 Census Mason Co. (W)VA
Charles Clendinen, Sr.
1 male (under 5) born 1825-1830 (#6 son)
1 male (over 10 and under 15) born 1815-1820 (#7 son)
1 male (over 15 and under 20) born 1810-1815 (#2 son)
1 male (over 40 and under 50) born 1780-1790 (This would be Charles
Sr.)
1 female (under 5) born 1825-1830 (#8 daughter)
1 female (over 5 and under 10) born 1820-1825 (#9 daughter)
2 females (over 10 and under 15) born 1815-1820 (#3 & #4)or(#4 & #5)
or (#3 & #5)
1 female (over 15 and under 20) born 1810-1815 (#3 or #4 or #5)
1 female (over 40 and under 50) born 1780-1790 (This would be his
wife)
1 female (over 60 and under 70) born 1760-1770 (This could be his
mother)
#1 son born 1804-1810 left after 1820 Census possibly John Clendinen who
showed up in 1830 Census as head of household.
John Clendinen first showed up as head of households in Mason County, (W)V
in 1830 Census.
1830 Census in Mason County, (W)VA
John Clendinen
2 males (under 5) born 1825-1830
1 male (over 20 and under 30) born 1800-1810 (This would be John's
age)
no females listed
Did Wife die before 1830 Census? Could have been married between 1820-1830.
In 1840 Census Mason Co., (W)VA
Charles Clendenen
1 male (over 10 and under 15) born 1825-1830 (#6 son)
1 male (over 15 and under 20) born 1820-1825 (?) no sons that age in
previous census but there was #9 daughter listed this age
1 male (over 50 and under 60) born 1780-1790 (This would be Charles)
1 female (over 10 and under 15) born 1825-1830 (#8 daughter)
1 female (over 20 and under 30) born 1810-1820 (#3 or #4 or #5
daughter)
1 female (over 50 and under 60) born 1780-1790 This would be his wife)
1 female slave (over 10 and under 24) born 1816-1830
#3 or #4 or #5 daughter, #7 son, #2 son left after 1830 census.
Was Male born 1820-1825 really a female instead which would be #9 daughter?
or was there a male as #9 instead of a daughter?
In 1850 Census Charles Sr. disappeared from Mason County but I believe he
moved to Putnam County.
In the 1850 Census of Putnam County
Charles Clendenen (65) a farmer living by himself. All children left
household after 1940 census and got married or they went to live with someone
else? This Charles, which was born 1785, I believe to be the same Charles
Sr. because his age is about right.
There are other possiblities as father of Charles Jr.
If Charles Jr. was born in another county and moved to Mason County after he
got married before1820 Census. Maybe Alexander's brothers John or Robert.
1. John Clendening, (over 45)
1810 Census in Monongalia County
2 males (over 10 and under 16) born 1794-1800 (1 male could have been
Charles Jr.)
1 male (over 16 and under 26) born 1784-1794
1 male (over 45 and up) born before 1765 (This would be John)
1 female (under 10) born 1800-1810
1 female (over 16 and under 26) born 1784-1794
I don't have 1820 Census for John yet!
2. Robert Clendennen, born 1765-1784
In 1810 Census in Giles Co., VA
2 males (under 10) born 1800-1810
1 male (over 10 and under 16) born 1794-1800 (Could have been Charles
Jr.)
1 male (over 26 and under 45) born 1765-1784 (This would be Robert)
3 females (under 10) born 1800-1810
2 females (over 10 and under 16) born 1794-1800
2 females (over 26 and under 45) born 1765-1784
There was a John Clendenan listed in 1820 Census in Giles Co., VA but I don't
have details yet.
I need to check all these out in order to proof which one was father of
Charles Jr.
Others that I wonder what family they belong to?
Leander Clendenen first showed up as head of household in Mason Co., (W)VA in
1840 Census
Leander Clendenen
In 1840 Census in Mason Co., (W)VA
1 male (over 20 and under 30) born 1810-1820 (This would be Leander)
2 females (under 5) born 1835- 1840
1 female (over 5 and under 10) born 1830-1835
1 female (over 20 and under 30) born 1810-1820 (This would be his
wife)
Was he the son of George or Charles?
I am wondering who the father was of James, who was in Mason County in 1840
Census. Charles Jr. did have 2 sons born between 1820-1825 or George could
be his father who also had 2 sons born between 1820-1825.
James Clendenen
1 male (over 15 and under 20) born 1820-1825 (This would be James)
1 female (over 20 and under 30) born 1810-1820 (This would be his
wife)
James A. Clendenen, GGGrandfather of my husband was born 1821-1823. James in
the census was over 15 but under 20, making him born between 1820-1825. I
believe this is the right one. James was married to Rebecca Lewis on June 25,
1840.. If the census was taken after June 25, 1840 this would be truely the
same James in 1840 census.
In 1850 Census, James didn't show in Mason County but there was a Joseph
Clendenen in Putnam County which matched all the details I have on James
A.Clendenen. I believe the name was wrong..
Wm M. Clendenen born about 1824 and Frances were also in Putnam County in
1850.
These both could be sons of Charles Jr.
Frances Jividen married William M. Clendenen in 1849 just before 1850 census.
Remember, Charles Clendenen age 65 was in Putnam County in 1850 Census. This
Charles was not Charles Jr.
William M. and James A. Clendenen were in Putnam County in 1850 census with
consecutive houshold reference numbers
Any more ideas on this would be greatly apreciated!
C. R. Clendenen
I am sorry that I didn't list with last msg.
In the 1880 census for Jackson co. WV. Bert is listed as grandson....he
is not. He is the son of ANOTHER 'Charles' Clendenin and Charlotte
Ripley b. 31 Jul 1852, Salem Roanoke, Va. We have not found a record of
a marriage...'Charles' remarried and had a family and so did Charlotte.
James A. and Becca raised Bert and at the age of 16 Bert moved to Mason
Co....We are still looking for the 'Charles' connection. I have a
theory that 'Charles' is brother to James A., no proof and am still
looking for proof. Have I confused you all enough, yet? If not I can
keep on trying.

I put a lot of work and sweat into finding this information! My hubby and I
went on a cemetery hunt one Sunday afternoon and I hope you all can benefit
from my efforts... I am glad to have another family here on the net...
Cyndy
In the 1870 census Jackson co. WV.
Family of James A. and Rebecca Clendenin
Baby listed at Benton (clearly written as Benton) is actually Berton!
Actually, his name is Berton Thomas Clendenin (his progeny now spells it
Clendenen). Bert T. was a Councilman in Pt. Pleasant, Mason co. WV and
d. of pneumonia in 9 Feb 1935, Pt. Pleasant.

Sharon,
I will let Virginia answer your question about Joseph as opposed to
James in the 1850 census. I had never compared that family with James
A. Clendenin's family but the children's names and dates are too close
not to be James A. and family. The name in the film I read was clearly
Joseph, so is the first living child. Being the gggranddaughter of
James A. I am sure the census taker made an honest mistake...These folks
for the most part also moved together to Jackson Co, still living in
close proximity. Virginia has good records so she can shed more light I
am sure.

Thank you Cyndy. I have most of the material you sent but it will fill
in some gaps. James A. is my gggrandfather!!! Say Hi to your husband
for me, second cousin to show up today!

Hi Sharon and List,
Here is the next part of Robert Clendenon's descendancy.
Best Wishes, Bruce Wood

Virginia,
Could you answer a question for me?
This little controversy over Joseph v James A as a son of Charles
Clendenin: Is the name Joseph actually spelled out in the census? If not,
the abbreviation for Joseph is Jos while the abbreviation for James is Jas.
Do you have a list of children from the census for James/Joseph and Rebecca?
I've made that mistake in the past. Sometimes you just have to go to
microfilm of the original to be able to tell what it is supposed to be.
Sharon

(abt 1790-aft. 1860) is in fact a deed for what seems to be mostly personal
property and whatever interest he has in the land on which he lives, from
Charles to his 'beloved son and daughter, William M. Clendenin and Lucy
Clendenin'. This is in Putnam Co., VA in 1848.
>
> Two years later, the 1850 Census for Putnam finds Charles (65) living
with Andrew and Lucy Lewis, William M. and Frances Jividen Clendenin next
door, and next door to them is Joseph Clendenin. The Joseph Clendenin family
lists a wife, Rebecca, and six children. James A. Clendenin married Rebecca
Lewis. The children enumerated with Joseph in 1850 correspond in name and
age to the children of James A. and Rebecca Clendenin. I believe (note that
this is a theory) that 'Joseph' is actually James A. Clendenin.
