Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
ROOTSWEB PUTS IT TOGETHER. Have you ever wished you could look up
*everything* at RootsWeb that relates to a particular surname?
Now you can!
Click on the new option SURNAME RESOURCES at RootsWeb's main page
<http://www.rootsweb.com/> or go directly to:
<http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/>. Click on the letter of
the alphabet for the surname of interest, and then select it from
the list that appears. This will take you to a "surname resource
cluster," where you can search for your surname in numerous
databases. For example, using BANKSTON you would find:
<http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/b/a/BANKSTON/>, where you
could search "B" WEB SITES, the OBITUARY DAILY TIMES, or:
o The ROOTSWEB SURNAME LIST (RSL). RSL search options are by
surname, Soundex, or Metaphone (the latter two are "sounds-
like" matches). You can search for updates from the past two
months, last month, last week, or for any mention.
o TRANSCRIPTION PROJECTS. You might check to see if your
immigrant ancestors' names are listed at the Immigrant Ship
Transcribers Guild (ISTG).
o PRIMARY RECORDS AT ROOTSWEB (from USGenWeb Archives and
RootsWeb Searchable Databases).
o GENERAL LINKS AND SEARCH ENGINES. There are three options.
o ROOTSLINK link registry. You can add a new link also.
o SEEKER search engine, which returns surname matches from
Web pages -- there is much "hidden genealogy" that this
search will help you find.
o SURNAME HELPER search engine finds queries and surname
registrations posted at various genealogically-related
sites on the Web, with participating sites including many
USGenWeb and WorldGenWeb sites. All GenConnect boards are
indexed in Surname Helper.
o MAILING LISTS. Descriptions of lists that relate to this
surname, subscription instructions, and links to the
archives so you can search or browse past postings.
o GENCONNECT. Click on GLOBAL SURNAME SEARCH to find queries
that mention the surname of interest that are posted in
connection with any county, state, or country in the world.
Or click an icon for one of the seven automated boards that
together make up a "suite" of boards available for surnames
and localities (Queries, Bible records, Biographies, Deeds,
Obituaries, Pensions, and Wills).
RootsWeb hopes that putting these links under one SURNAME
RESOURCES roof will help everyone find all the buried treasure.

HI everyone, In researching my family thru Adam Clendenin of Giles, Virginia.
I have seen the "Clendenin name" spelled 3 different ways in the same
document, This was talking about George Clendenin, son of Charles. It was
even spelled Clindinin in this paragraph.
On Archibald S. Clendenin, I have seen it spelled every way you can imagine.
But it was all talking about the same man.
I wouldn't place too much stock on looking for only one spelling of this
family, you may be surprised at what you will find.
Debby
Norman, On your request. The Clendenin that moved to the West coast do you
think they changed the name to Clendenen? I working on that we have names
like John, Charles, William etc.
I am knew to ancestry research but have been searching for my line of
the Clendenin surname. I have gotten as for as Charles Clendenin born
1796 in Orange County, North Carolina and died before 7 August 1848 in
Lewis County, Tennessee. He was married to Francis Armstrong on 15
September 1827 in North Carolina. She later married a Harris prior to 7
August 1848 because that was a date in which the will was probated. They
had seven children all born in North Carolina which was a part of
Virginia at the time: Theodore C., Joseph A., Telia Ann, Nancy J., Simon
P., Elizabeth, Francis. This family remained in Tennessee, but later
spread to Texas, Illinois, California, Washington, Oregon, Oklahoma, and
Utah. If anyone has any information on this ancestry
line, please let me know because I have not been able to go any further
beyond this Charles.
We think there is a link to Charles born 1759 to William and Mary Graham
but that is speculation. Please help.
Norman Clendenin
I don't know of research done in that area, but I would love to hear about
it. My great-grandfather Arthur Gallagher Clendinning was supposed to
have come from Lancaster county to the deep South some time @ 1890-1900.

As I am going through my notes I find a possible fact that Mary Ann
Patterson and Charles Clendenin were married in Lancaster County Pa in
1735...I am sure that I probably received this information from someone
on this list....Does someone have this fact documented? Has someone
done research in Lancaster County....That seems like the likely place
for me to spend the night if there is any possibility of finding
something there....Has someone already done extensive research there?

OK for clarification I am talking to those of us studying the many lines
that come down from the Charles Clendenin for whom the city of
CHarleston Wv is named. The man who is thought to have died in 1786 and
been buried inside the stockade of Fort Lee (Charleston).
I am driving to Boston this weekend. I had a sudden change in plans and
will probably leave some time today. I could really drive to anywhere
to spend tonight. I could probably get up and do a few hours of research
tomorrow--Saturday morning....I know that there is a possibility that
what I might want could be closed on the weekend....Anyone have any
suggestions of something that I might give a try? I have my lines in
pretty good shape down to me....It is where Charles might have been
before Augusta COunty Virginia that intrigues me....
So if anyone is on line this morning and has a little time to give this
some thought, send me your ideas...Thanks, Marsha in WV

When I die I want to go quietly. I want to go like my grandpa did. He just
went to sleep and never woke up. I sure don't want to go kicking and
screaming like the people who were riding with him at the time.
Dear Clendenin researchers: I have recorded information from this list
and have not always had time see what I have. I was going through some
and found the following:
Leander Clendenin b. abt 1814 (age 39 in 1850 Mason Co. WV census)
Elizabeth (Lewis) wife, b. abt 1816 (age 37 in same census)
They have a son, Joseph, b. 1841, and this is correct, but then the
records show this Joseph being married to Mary E. Hawkins in 1875. This
is incorrect. Also received info that Mary E. died in 1875.
The Joseph who is married to Mary E. Hawkins, is Joseph B. Clendenin,
son of James A. and Rebecca Lewis Clendenin. Joseph B. b. in Mason co.
15 Jul 1841 and spent most of his early years in Jackson Co WV. Them as
an adult moved back to Mason Co, Robinson District. He married Mary
Elizabeth Hawkins 25 Mar 1875, they had two children, Wilbur C. b. 1877
and Bunetta b. 1879. Mary E. died (have no date at this time) and then
he remarried Frances Edwards.
Here is another, Strother Clendenin b. 1848, son of Leander and
Elizabeth Lewis Clendenin. The info I received was that Strother was
son of Smith Edwards and Mary C. Clendenin. Well, first of all, I
should think he would be an Edwards, and secondly, Mary C. Clendenin is
Strother's older sister by about 8 years.
Hope this helps some one else.

And with Thomas White one page before is Polly age 49.
Does anyone on the list know about this Thomas White? Or Patten White? Near
by are many other Meadows families, plus Robert Clendenin 24 with Jane 19;
and Stephen Blankenship 60 with Eleanor 54; and John f French 25 with
Susanda?? 27?? really hard to read, and Mahala French [widow?] 26.
I have one Stephen Blankenship b 1791 son of Richard and Rebecca, this Steve
did die in Mercer.
When I see all these families living on top of each other I just have to
figure out who they are!! I may have some of them in my files but not in the
computer
