Hi Cyndy,
Yes, Joseph B. son of James A. m. Mary Elizabeth Hawkins 25 Mar 1875 and
they had two children, Wilber C. b. abt 1877, and Bunetta b, Dec 1879.
I got info from Possumjim that Mary E. died 1875...not so, she is listed
in the 1880 Mason Co census. Those are the only two children that I've
been able to come up with. I found Frances Edwards Clendenin burial but
did not find Mary E.'s. She may have been buried in her families
cemetery...any one know about a Hawkins cemetery?
Hope this helps. Will get back with you and other cousins soon with
some disappointing info.

Sandy,
Sorry about the periods. Unfortunately no dates for Nancy or Lucy. Her
brothers were Williamson and Thomas though.
Wiliamson Ball born June 1798 died Oct 21, 1876 married Catherine Fisher
Thomas Ball born 1802 and died 1876, married Julia Ann Hogg
Did you know that?

Nancy's name was Nancy Ball before she married Charles Clendenin, son of
Alexander Clendenin... Her father was Capt. James Ball... the family was
listed in the Mason County History book... My mother in law has her own copy
since she contributed to it... My husband's GGGrandfather was James A.
Clendenin who we think was Charles's son too... I guess there were other's
that were insane too..
I have another question... Does anyone know if Joseph Clendenin born 1941 who
married Mary Elizabeth Hawkins was the son of James A. Clendenin or Leander
Clendenin... I know James A. Clendenin had a son Joseph.. just didn't know
who he married... there was a Joseph who married a second wife Frances Edward
too..

Happy New Year
To all my Clendenin lists,
I was looking over some info I found at the New York Public Libary last
April..
Something got me confused a little..
It was in pension records for PA.. It said a James Clendenin born May 11,
1763 died in 1813.. James was in the MD line Ap 20 Aug 1833.. age 69. He was
resident of Little Britain Twsh in Lancaster County, PA. He moved there in
1787..
John, Rebecca PA line lived with father in Codorus Creek York Co., PA.
then it said Sol was 6 or 7 years younger ..(which I don't know what Sol
meant..)
Moved to Northumberland (later called Lycoming Co. PA) and lived with John
Bennett. It said that father of John Bennett married a sister of James and
William Bennett brother of John Bennett married another sister of James.
John married Rebecca. Margaret Clendenin who married James.
Children: Peggy, Elizabeth, Charles, Margery, Robert, Ann, Rebecca, Mary,
John, Deborah and 1 child died 1-2 weeks old 1840.. Robert son resident of
Lycoming County, PA in 1851..
I thought these were listed as children of James but I found a John Clendenin
married Rebecca LaFrance who had these listed for them... this is where I am
confused...
James who married Margaret was the first entry in this pension record.. so I
thought they were talking about him.. I do need to look again for that record
to see if I read it wrong..
James and Margaret may be James Clendenin and Margaret Anderson.. but some
said he was born in 1736... The James here in this pension record was born in
1763...
Any thoughts on this?

Nancy's Story has engendered many questions for me as well as for others. I will get back to the list with more detailed information after the holidays. I live in Florida and during this time of the year, my family loves to visit, i.e. 25 to 30 for Christmas dinner.
Happy Holidays
Virginia
Eventually, I was successful in getting her patient records. The records consist primarily of the official documents from Putnam County, VA that amount to a commitment procedure. She was confined in the asylum from December 22, 1848 until her death in 1865.
The deed for Charles Clendenins property was executed on November 28, 1848, the same day that Putnam County issued the documents for Nancy Clendenins commitment to the Western Lunatic Asylum. In those documents the justices proclaimed that Charles Clendenin was a poor person and had no property that they knew of, although these same justices had signed the deed giving away his property.
December 22, 1999 is the 151st anniversary of the day Nancy Clendenin arrived at the Western Lunatic Asylum. Given the census evidence, I dont believe she ever left there. In October 1999 I visited her grave on terrace seventeen, grave eighteen behind the prison that is now housed in the building that was the asylum in Staunton, VA.

The recent news about treatment for mental illness in this country and a specific anniversary prompted me to choose this time to disclose the information Ive found about the wife of Charles Clendinen, that is Charles, son of Alexander and Catherine Spencer Clendenin. As many of you know, for quite some time Ive been perplexed about a 1848 Putnam County, VA recorded deed for personal property and whatever interest he had in the land where he lived, from Charles Clendenin to his son and daughter, William M. and Lucy Clendenin. There were rumors a Mary or Nancy Ball was his wife. The will of James Ball of Mason County mentions his daughter Nancy "now wife to Charles Clendenen". He left her $500 and her share of his slaves. I had also heard about a gravestone engraved with "Charles Clendenen, Died 1861, At Rest, Nancy his wife Lies in the cemetery at Staunton, Va".
In July of 1999, I found the grave in question in the Carney/Lewis Cemetery on Cunningham Road in Jackson County, WV. This grave has been mistaken for that of Charles Clendenin the son of James A. and Lucinda Lewis Clendenin. Also buried there are Andrew Lewis (son of William Lewis and Lucinda Clendenin, daughter of Alexander) and his wife Lucy C. who was most probably the daughter of Charles and Nancy.
I simply called the public library in Staunton, VA and the librarian checked the cemetery books for the city and indeed, Nancy Clendenin is buried therein the cemetery behind the old Western Lunatic Asylum. Nancy had died on June 1, 1865. The 1850 and 1860 censuses of Augusta County, VA list Nancy Clendenin as a patient in the asylum. In 1850 she was described as insane and in 1860 her condition was unknown.
To be continued

So you say this grave of Charles was Charles, son of Alexander and was it
stated on the grave stone? The mistaken Charles as son of James A. and
Rebecca Lewis Clendenin instead of Lucinda Lewis Clendenin.. Right?
Was there a grave for James A. Clendenin in that cemetery also?
I also got word from another woman who also visited this Cemetery too...
This woman is daughter of James Monroe Clendenin who lives in Clendenin, WV..
James Monroe is son of Marion Oso Clendenin, son of our Marion Oscar
Clendenin...
Maybe her father can get more information about James A. too...
Keep me informed of any other info you find..

you can send a chart using the NGS format and put the source notes in the
text, Here is how, I hope I didn't send this already? BTW birth date is two
separate words in case you want to change it, you have "birthdate", I always
run spell check before I paste anything into my data base, and it always
wants to change that one to birthrate!

Family Tree Maker is a versatile program but most people don't realize they
can send several different types of charts as well as a quick and easy
outline via email, [without the need for attachments, which are the bane of
the Internet]. The outline is by far the easiest, all you to is click on
outline, click on contents, items to include, choose name, all three dates
[b,m,d] in location, spouse's father/mother, take out the short default date
or you will have double dates, click on contents again and choose 2 or 3
generations, don't send people 10 generations down to your grandchildren
unless they ask, besides it is a bad idea to send out so much personal
information to strangers. Then just click on edit and copy the outline, and
simply paste into email. You only have to choose items to include the first
time, the program remembers this the next time.
There are 3 charts you can create but these must be copied, pasted to word,
cut from word, and pasted to email which seems like a lot of work to me when
the outline is so easy, but…
Click on GEN REPT, click on format and choose one. Click on contents and
choose options, you don't have to include the notes, which makes a shorter
chart, then choose 2 or 3 generations. Also if you put your source notes in
the text you don't get all those numbers after the names of each person.
First is the register style which prints the entire name in ALL CAPS and
skips lines between most people, this form takes up a lot of space and the
all caps are hard to read.
Second is a much better form called the NGS format, which is descent ordered
and prints a nice compact list of children, then in the second gen. lists the
children that you have more info on and their children. It is by far superior
to the register style.
Third is the ancestor chart which does just that, prints out ancestors, you
can choose how many generations, again it is best to choose only 2 or 3.
Family Tree Maker is an amazing program and every six months or so you should
skim through the manual to see if you can learn something new.

Hi Cyndy, how are you? I can answer one question. The John Clendenin in
Giles in 1820 is the son of Robert Clendenin of Giles. John is the brother
to Archibald S. Clendenin and Mary Clendenin who married Alexander McNeely.
John Clendenin of Giles married Polly McKinney, dau of James McKinney in 1819
in Giles. I know he was in Mercer, VA until 1829 but then I have lost him.
