Good morning,
Just wanted to update you on the state of the mailing list. As of this
morning we have 130 members (combined) on the list and the digest. You guys
are absolutely fantastic.
Those of you who have just joined us, please send information on your family
line. We will need that information to determine if we can help each other.
I am a little behind in putting material on the website and am not really
sure when I can get caught up. I have been out of town for the past two
weeks and didn't have access to my software program for the website.
My father is also critically ill. He has cancer and we've been fortunate
that treatment has prolonged his life for nearly three years now.
Unfortunately, it appears the cancer has attacked his lungs and we're not
sure yet what the next course of action will be.
Let me give you my work schedule (remember when I'm out of town I can only
read email):
Week of Feb 1: At home
Week of Feb 8: Chicago
Week of Feb 15: Goddard Space Center, Maryland
Week of Feb 22: At home
Week of Mar 1: At home
Week of Mar 8: Goddard Space Center, Maryland
Please keep sending your information and I will get it on the website as
quickly as possible.
Thank you,
Sharon
Wow, I am so excited!!! I think this is my line. I've gotten absolutely
nowhere with it. What I have is from my late father-in-law's notes. I'll
have to check, but some of them are from family bibles I think. there are
inconsistencies, but it's a fairly good match with Matthew Bolen Clendennen.
I have Matthew Benjamin, but that's close enough for them to be the same.
His death date is about 1860 - I have him having died in 1862. His daughter
Ellen I have married to James D. Renfro. My birthdate for Ellen, 1856,
matches.
This shows Matthew married to Elizabeth Webb in 1829. I have Matthew
married to Eliza Pool in 1842. This could very easily be a second marriage.
The associated family of Renfro's came from Missouri to Texas as well.
Looks promising to me!! Here is what I have:

For all those Clendinens and related folks you just might want to try

Greetings all
With Burns Night nearly upon us I have decided to share my Great
Grandmothers receipt(recipe) for Haggis with you all. Remember that
this was a common workaday dish in the old days and eaten regularly
by all Scots. If you haven't tried it it is a wonderful dish that
tastes of Scotland . Just don't think about how it is made
GRANNY GLENDINNINGS SCOTCH HAGGIS.
First, procure the large stomach bag of a sheep, also one of the
smaller bags called" Kings Hood", together with the pluck which is the
lights, liver and heart. The bags must be well washed in cold water,
then plunged into boiling water and scraped. Great care must be take
of the large bag. Let it lie and soak in cold water, with a little
salt, all night. Wash also the pluck. You will now boil the small bag
with the pluck; in boiling, leave the wind pipe attached and let the
end of it hang over the edge of the pot, so that impurities may pass
fully out. When cold, cut away the windpipe and any bits of skin and
grizzle that seem improper. Grate a quarter of the liver and mince the
heart, lights and small bag very small, along with half a pound of
beef suet. Mix all this mince with two small cupfuls of oatmeal,
previously dried before the fire, black and Jamaica pepper and salt;
also add half a pint of liquor in which the pluck was boiled, or beef
gravy. Stir all together into a consistency. Then take the large bag,
which has been thoroughly cleaned, and put the mince into it. Fill it
only a little more than half full, in order to leave room for the meal
and meat to expand. If crammed too full, it will burst in boiling. Sew
up the bag with a needle and thread. The haggis is now complete.
COOKING
Put haggis in pot with boiling water and prick it occasionally with a
large needle, as it swells, to allow the air to escape. If the bag
appears thin, tie a cloth outside the skin. There should be a plate
beneath it, to prevent it sticking to the pot. Boil for three hours.
Serve in a napkin on a dish, without garnish or gravy, it being
sufficiently rich in itself.
GLOSSaRY
Lights - lungs
Jamaica Pepper - Allspice

Hi guys, I need a favor!
Does anyone have access to this book?
Historical Reg. of Virginians in the Rev., Soldiers, Sailors and marines,
1775-1783. Ed. By John H. Gwathmey. Richmond, Va. 1938 [13, 872p.]
Adam Clendenin is listed on page 158. His military record. I really need a
look-up in this. If anyone has access, please let me know. I do not have this
at my local library or colleges.
Thanks, debby
It has NOT changed. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~clendin
The problem that you have encountered is probably a matter of the spelling
of the last word. It coordinates with the list-clendin.
Hopes this helps everyone who might be getting frustrated trying to find it.
Please bookmark or add to your favorites list.
Thanks,
Sharon

Good morning,
Thought I would send you some information re the mailing list membership,
results of the roll call, etc.
As of this morning, we have 95 members receiving the list and another 28
receiving the digest for a total of 123 members. The numbers keep growing
and I am very pleased.
You have all been sent the results of the roll call that Mary Louise
Townsend so graciously put together for us. Several of you did not respond.
I'm going to ask you at this time to do so.
The only way this list will continue to thrive is by all the members sharing
information.
*QUERIES*
Please post your queries to both the list and the Query Board on the
website. If you post to one or the other, you will miss people who have
information you may need and vice versa.
*Family Research Sub-groups*

researching the same lines:

If any of you do not feel that you cannot function as a point of contact for
these families, please let me know and we'll see if we can find someone
else.
The primary thrust here is to document the information we locate as well as
the relationships between individuals.
Areas to check for documentable facts: deeds; wills; other land records;
military pension records; births; deaths; marriages; church records, etc.
If you have information on any of these families please contact the point of
contact listed above and offer your information to them so that they may
gather it all together (with documentation).
Thanks,
Sharon
Thanks, Mary Louise and thanks to all of you for responding. You responded
at between 75-80% of possibles. A fantastic rate which simply tells me
you're still here and you're still interested.
Thanks again,
I'll take a look at this information and see if we can get some research
groups going.

Hello:
Just wanted to pass along some information I have found on my
Clendenin family.
I have found the parents names of my GGGrandfather. James Clendenin
b. abt 1816 in Canada (we believe in the Smithville Ontario area) d.
27 March 1893 ( buried in Poe Cem MI) I believe he came to the US
around 1855. He was married to a Ruth C. Greerman, his second wife
unknown(possibly Eunice Lease from Iowa) and his third wife Harriet
E. Casselman of Marcellus MI.
James Clendenins father was John Clendenin and his mother was Lydia
Summerfield. We believe they were both from Canada. James settled in
Cass Co MI for much of his life.
Does any of this ring a bell? Thanks..........Diane
Hi Diane,
I just read your e-mail and checked my information. Smithville is
located southeast of Hamilton, Ontario and northwest of Niagara
Falls, Ontario. There were indeed Clendenins living in that area
and it is understood they came north from the United States
around the time of the Revelutionary War.
The person you need to contact is Mrs. Corlene Taylor, RR#1,
Lakeshore Road, Beamsville, Ontario Canada L0R 1B1. She has
been actively researching this family for many years and is a
member of the Ontario Genealogical Society. The society does
have have a web site, however, I am not certain if the Niagara
branch has one. Mrs. Taylor is not on the internet ( as far as I
know )so you will have to write her.
I hope this information will be of some help.

Sarah sss(a)texoma.net asked if I had any info regarding descendants of
Fisher Clendenin who live in Texas.
I'm sorry I can't help there, but this might be useful:
Anita (Clendenin) Enquist/ P.O. Box 246/ Warm Springs, Ga. 31820 (this
address is 9 years old- may be still good) wrote a book some years ago about
the descendants of Thomas Clendenin who 'went South'. I think she mentioned
a Fisher Clendenin. I know she had much info about the family in the North
Carolina area.
"History of Alamance" by Miss S. W. Stockard, Raleigh, N. C. Chapter V111
mentions the seven sons of Joseph Clendenin, the fifth being Fisher, who
married Miss Cook.
Same book, Chapter XV111 mentions the immigrant, William Clendenin, a native
of County Down, Ireland, who immigrated to Pennsylvania about 1750 and to
North Carolina about 1758. I think the above Joseph was William's son.
William's daughter married Judge Jesse Turner.
