Here is the line of Fauquier Glendenning's that I have been working on
and trying to prove that my John was of the Fauquier Glendenning's.
John's son George stated that he was born in Fauquier and some of the
Glendenning girls who married in Fauquier came with him to Mon. Co. (W)
Va. But other than that I have not been able to prove who John was
before 1810 when he shows up in Mon. Co. John's wife's name was
Margaret, that it why it is important that I find John of Fauquier
having a wife named Margaret.
I took the deed to read like you did Sharon but I was not sure.I would
think since Margaret widow of James is remarried by this date her name
would have said Margaret Cox. If it does say John has wife Margaret, then
I think I could accept that they are the same John. John stated in 1810
census that he was over 45 yrs.old. That puts him being born before
1755. The John son of James would have to have been born before 1746.
1. Capt. John Glendenning married to Ann Mott by 1692 died 1712
Richmond Co.Va
Ann Mott daughter of George Mott 1671 - 1740 will dated 1733
They had only son John Glendenning, 4 daughters;Margaret who married
William Grant;Ellen (Eleanor) married John Arnstrong; Jale married David
Seale; Elizabeth married Jos. Armstrong
2. John was married to Phoebe by 1725. He was of age by 1719. Phoebe
died by 1745.
John died abt 1748. They had children
3. James, John, Margaret,Elizabeth and Sara? (Not sure of the spelling
the papers are hard to read) and Eleanor.
James married Margaret ? (her last name is uncertain) some speculation
that she was a Kenyon
John married Jane Grant 1746 his first cousin No one I have talked to
seems to know what happened to these two people.Where they went or if
they had any children.Last court record that I have for them is June
1751 King George Co.
The James above who married Margaret died 1767 Margaret remarried to
John Cox in 1768 James and Margaret had children
4.James, John ,George, Margaret ,Eleanor (Nelly) and Mary.
On October 5 1769 Ann and Elizabeth choose Jas. Kenyon as their
guardians.Jno.Cox and his wife Margaret are appointed guardians to
Margaret, Geo.,Eliner, Mary, orphans of James Glendening
James and John were apparently of age (21) when James died in 1767.
By 1774 James is listed as being dead and leaving no issue.George is
still considered an infant under the age of 21. John and George's
guardian sell James's part of the estate from James their father.
George later married Rosannah Bower. In a deed dated 1789 he still has
wife Rosannah.
Question ? Who was the George Glendening who married Milly Duncan
1786?Was he the same George? He paid taxes from years 86-99. Also there
is a bond dated 1801 George Glendening took George Glendening's children
Eli, John, Peter,Molly,Rozy and Sydney. Does any one have any
information on where this other George came from?
There is also a James Glendening who married Sally Hooper in 1794. Who
was he? There is also a James bound to John Glendening in 1798. Who was
he?
John paid taxes 82-99.After that there is no record of him that I know
of. My ancestor,John Glendenning) shows up in records in Mon.Co. (W)Va
about 1810. There was also a James Glendenden who was a Grand Juror in
year 1802. As my John's son James who married Diana Van Horn would have
been to young Who was this James?
I hope all of this make some kind of since, I am not a good typist.
I have more on this family and copies of all deeds and wills if any one
is interested. A very nice man here on the internet sent them to me in
the spring. He got everything from the Historical Society of Virginia.
Any help,suggestions, appreciated
Joy
Hi Cousins
I would like someone who understands these wills to read the following
for me. Tell me which man it is stateing had wife Margaret. I know the
father James had wife Margaret but my John also had wife Margaret. It is
very important that I know for sure.
Here is some background to help you understand what the deed is about.
James Glendening and wife Margaret had 3 sons and several daughters. The
sons were James, John and George.
James (the father) died in 1768. His widow (Margaret) remarried to John
Cox in 1769.
James(the son) died without issue. George is underage.
John Cox is appointed guardian of George. In 1769 John Cox has
Margaret's part of the land set apart.
So here is the following document exactly as it written.
Dated 8 July 1774;recorded 8 July 1774
Indenture between John Glendening "eldest son and heir of James
Glendening late of the county of King George, dec'd." and Margaret
Glendening his wife of the first part, and Joseph Jones of the second
part-
John Glendening deeds to Jones land on Muddy Creek devised by will of
his father James (1776) to his son James in tail, and in default of
issue unto his sons John and George. The said James (the son) died
without issue and the land is now vested in the said John, part to this
deed, and his brother George Glendening "an infant under the age of 21
years"- John Cox his guardian has agreed to a division of this land, and
that part adjoining whereon James Davis now lives has been alotted to
John, party to this deed who by his instrument conveys his moity to
Joseph Jones. Original tract contained 150 acres.
Thanks for any help

Hi guys, I know a lady that is a desc. of Anne and John Rodgers. I will have
to try and locate her e-mail address. She has changed it a lot. She has been
looking for the parents of John Rodgers with no luck for years. I will get
back to you.
Debby
Handley, Dr. Harry H. "The Clendenin Massacre." Does anyone have names for the
3 children of John Rodgers? p231 Ann m 1767 John Rodgers, moved to Staunton
area, had at least 3 children, returned to G'brier in 1772...settled on the
site of the massacre, Ann found her bowl and spoon.

Does anyone else have this info?? These names for Ann's parents? Also, we
have seen Nancy Ewing/Irvin/Irwin as mother of Arch but no proof, Allyn, do
you have this?
And-- Greenbrier did not exist until 1778 so no one was married there in 1763,
Montgomery not formed until 1776 from Fincastle, Botetourt in 1769 from
Augusta--so maybe they were married in Augusta. Where did you get the name of
the infant James?

The quote I sent was not from Chalkey-sorry-here is what I have on Arch 1730.
Handley, Dr. Harry H. "The Clendenin Massacre." The Journal of the Greenbrier
Historical Society. Vol. II, No. 2, October 1970. p. 7. . .
In 1759, Archabald Clendenin, Jr., his wife the former Ann McSwain, and their
infant daughter Jane, made their home on the Clendenin survey, and three years
later he was appointed constable by the Augusta County Court. . .
By June 1763, there were more than thirty families living on Muddy Creek and
in the Big Levels area.
Archibald was killed in the Massacre at Levels, this part of Monroe County was
in ? Augusta Co.
William Douglass vs Davis In 1759 patent issued to Archibald [1716] and John
Clendenin, 340 acres in Bath Co on Cowpasture, Arch and John were father and
son, Arch had another son Arch living at his father's death and Arch Jr
claimed to be the patentee Archibald, but in 1761 he acknowledged that he was
not the Archibald, Arch Jr was soon after the grant [17 Feb 1761] killed by
Indians, his dau Jane Davis claimed half the land; James Burnsides, prisoner
in Monroe Co deposes 10 April 1816, has been acquainted with Archibald
Clendenin since James was 3 years old, His children were viz, Archibald by his
first wife: Margaret and John by his latter wife who was James mother. He was
buried on the place on the Cowpasture [Bath Co] where William Douglass lives,
John was then 4/5. John sold the land and moved to TN and died. Ballard Smith
atty at law is son in law of Mrs. Davis the defendant.
Archibald JR. settled 3 1/2 miles sw of Lewisburg in Rich Hollow.
pg 227-before coming to G'brier Arch had married Anne McSwain and had three
children Jane age 4, son and an infant. Anne's father died when she was a
baby and her mom m 2nd Mr. Ewing - they had a son John Ewing, who came to
G'brier with Arch and Anne.
June 27 1763 Arch JR returned from a hunting trip....60 Shawanoes [shawnees]
led by Cornstalk.
75-100 people in the settlement...enjoyed a feast...first victim an old
woman...they killed all the men...one Col. Yokum escaped because he was away
from the house. He rode to Jackson's River where no one believed him, these
settlers were also killed by the fleeing Indians.
Cabins were burned at Clendenin home, survivors gathered up along with surv.
of Muddy Creek Massacre of June 26, to await return of those Indians who had
raided Carr's Crossing in Rockbridge Co....Set off to the Ohio, journey of 175
miles leaving G'brier area depopulated for about seven years.
p 229 Mrs. C tried to escape, after 10 miles asked another woman to carry her
baby, she hid...Indian said "Make the calf bawl and the cow will come"..he
slammed the baby into a tree and threw its body on the ground to be trampled
by the horses...Search for Mrs C halted by sighting of a bear, she escaped.
p230 Mrs C made her way home to the site of the massacre...when Ann reached
Howard Creek she was met by a group of people collecting goods from the site
of the massacre who were not happy to see her...they gave her bread and cold
duck [the quack, quack kind!!]....after nine days she reached Cow Pasture
River settlement and safety.
p231 Ann m 1767 John Rodgers, moved to Staunton area, had at least 3 children,
returned to G'brier in 1772...settled on the site of the massacre, Ann found
her bowl and spoon.
p232 tready with the indians in 1770 forced release of prisioners and Ann's
daughter Jane was returned, Ann's half brother John Ewing released earlier had
brought the news of the death of the son who had been adopted by an old Indian
couple, the squaw was jealous and made the man kill the boy.
Jane having lived 7 years with Indians was a stranger...[The gloves she made
while in capitivity are at the North House Museum in Lewisburg].
Chalkey's Chronicles-AUGUST 25, 1762. (341) Archd. Clendenning appointed
Constable on the waters of the Greenbrier.

Someone asked me the other day how to retrieve messages from the Rootsweb
Archives. Two different ways: 1) Visit Rootsweb and do the link, click, link
thing http://www.rootsweb.com or 2) send a message to
Clendinen-D-REQUEST(a)rootsweb.com. Put archive in the subject block and then
in the body of the message indicate which volume you want. Such as: send
volume98/222 (or whatever volume you want). IF it is available it will be
returned to you via e-mail. Remember, nothing in th4 body of the message
except send volume98/???
Hope this helps.
Hello:
I finally have a few minutes to let you know about the state of the mailing
list.
To the survey: Well, today we had 85 subscribers. In the past week there
have been 25 responses all positive about supporting in $$$$ a move to
Rootsweb when they are ready for such transactions. What about the rest of
you? Could you contribute in time or money a couple of bucks? You don't have
to but it would sure help out if you could.
By the way, while I'm on the subject of money -- Rootsweb has been operating
at a loss which is made up out of the pockets of two people who put it all
together. For 1997 the shortfall was something like $30,000. I don't know
about you but I wouldn't be able to keep Rootsweb afloat out of my own
pocket. I can, however, send them a few extra bucks. If you use Rootsweb in
any fashion, patronizing the mailing list, using the Rootsweb Surname lists,
visiting a web page residing on Rootsweb, would you please consider becoming
a member? It's $12 a year or $1 per month to be a Rootsweb member. You can't
even buy a cup of coffee in Starbucks for $1.00. And Rootsweb lasts a lot
longer. Just go to the Rootsweb site at http://www.rootsweb.com and follow
the links to the membership form. They even have a secure site where you can
become a member via credit card on-line (safely) and the $12 can be spread
over the entire year if you like.
I have copies of some old messages that contain information about the
various Clendinen lines that I am going to try to post to the list. This is
information which was passed about before the mailing list came into
existence. Those of you who may have made copies previously just hit your
delete key. Those of you who are new may find something you've been looking
for.
To let you know where I've been all week - sitting at this computer for
hours on end. I just took over the Putnam County, IN USGENWEB home page as
county coordinator. I wasn't crazy about the way the pages appeared or the
fact that there was incorrect/invalid information on the page, so when it
became available I took it over. "Hung" the new page on the internet this
afternoon so now I can get back to the Clendinen page. You're welcome to go
take a look http://www.rootsweb.com/~inputnam.
Anyway, it's hot and steamy here in coastal Virginia. I hope you all have
comfortable weather. And much luck with your research.

Hello everyone,
I have just joined as a member of this list.
My grandfather was Claude Clendinnen and our family has rsearched him all
the way back until 1770 in Ireland. I am in the process of writing a book
about him and his life, and have therefore got quite involved in gen.
research in the last few weeks.
I am hoping this list will aid me in that search.
One quick question...the note I received on subscribing said the web page
was at:
http://home.att/~SharonBryant
I cannot connect to this site? Is their a web page?
Cheers

I too would be willing to help financially...

I also will be willing to help with the page. Although my Glendenning's
seem to be a different branch of the family, maybe I will find some more
researchers who are working on the Fauquier Glendenning's.
Just thought I would pass this along in case someone has time but not money
to help out the cause - genealogy, of course.

Just wanted to pass along a tidbit - SK Publications is offering a FREE copy
of the census books (copies of the microfilm) they have available to anyone
who agrees to transcribe this information for the USGenWeb Project.
Find below "words from the horse's mouth" - John F. Schunk, Ph.D.

Yes, that's true. Here's the procedure:
1. To volunteer to transcribe a census for the USGenWeb Project, you need
to sign up at:
http://www.usgenweb.org/census/states.htm
2. Indicate that you would like a free copy of the county/year for which
you are volunteering, and be sure to give them your snail-mail address.
3. The Director of the USGenWeb Census Project will then notify us that you
have been assigned for a particular county/year, and then we will send you
your free book.
4. When your transcription is completed and placed in the USGenWeb
Archives, we ask that you include the following in the introductory remarks
of your file:
*****
Thanks to S-K Publications for providing the census page photocopies from
which this transcription was made. The complete original, handwritten
census of this county is available in book form (including a typed index)
from S-K Publications, PO Box 8173, Wichita KS 67208
(http://www.skpub.com/genie/census.html).
*****
5. Also if your transcription is posted on a webpage, we request a link to
our webpage for the county you have transcribed.
6. If, for any reason, it turns out that you are unable to complete your
census transcription, simply return the book to us so it can be sent to the
volunteer who takes your place.
NOTE: The only census books we have are the ones listed at
http://www.skpub.com/genie/census2.html
Can any of you Huston descendants help this gentleman. Reply directly to him
if you can. Thanks.

I wonder if you would look up Sarah Huston for me. She married Andrew
Douglas (b. 1756 d. 1811),
so I suppose she was born 1750-1760. Their daughter Jane (Jean) Douglas was
born in Mifflin Co,
Pennsylvania. It would be great to find her named in a will or marriage
contract.
We have nothing more on this ancestor, not even her father's name, so this
is probably the least-developed line we are working on. Obviously we would
be grateful for a lead.
An 1891 paper mentions a visit to our folks in Illinois by a Mrs. Huston
lady from Tyrone, Pa so the connection remained active.
Thanks for your offer.

Sharon,
I just wanted to thank you for sharing all this wonderful information with
us from your recent trip. I would like to comment on a couple of items you

I believe the James Clendenen mentioned above is the son of John and Janet
"Jean" HUSTON CLENDENEN. Isabel HUSTON is the daughter of Samuel and
Isabel SHARON? HUSTON. From notes passed down by my grandmother, she noted
that these 2 were 1st cousins.
2nd - Isabella CLENDENIN was the daughter of James and Isabel CLENDENEN.
Eventually she and Archibald moved to OH (by 1802). They eventually
settled in Auglaize Co. where the McCULLOUGH name is prevalent to this day.
They had 8 children that I know of - 4 boys and 4 girls. If anyone is
descended from this family, I know of a gentleman who is putting together a
book on Archibald and Isabella and their descendants, please contact me and
I'll put you in touch with him.
