Hi,
We have had 11 kits ordered and all 11 have been returned to the testing facility. Their quality control is running about 10 days behind so we are expecting our first results back about the 7th of April.
It is taking about eight weeks for the test results to be returned.
I'm still looking for proof that William Clendennen who married Helen Fowler and ended up in Cole Co., MO is the son of James and Margaret (Anderson) Clendenin. Any assistance you can render will be gratefully accepted. A will naming William as a son of James; deeds used to settle James' estate; an estate settlement; deeds with James selling land to William and naming William as his son -- these are all types of proof that we can use.
Anything, anyone?
Sharon
I received this message a couple of days ago from Gail R. Blancett:
"There is also a Turner Surname DNA project that is very active. We have 81 male Turners all with roots in the mid-Atlantic area who followed the Southern migration route through the Carolinas and some that went directly to KY on the Westward trek.
We are hoping to find a male Turner directly descended from Rebecca Clendenin who married James Turner in Orange Co., NC and then were in the part that became Alamance Co., NC. We think some of the desendants of this family also remained in the part that was Orange Co.
We are trying to see which of the Orange/Caswell/Alamance County Turners belong to which group of Turners as there clearly appear to be more than one separate "clan" there."
You can check this out by going to www.familytreedna.com and clicking on Turner under the Projects heading.
Hope to pick some of the good folks little gray cells and pin down this
Charles Clendenin.
1784 - Charles CLENDENIN Wittnesses Will of Richard LEAK, Orange County NC
(Will bk A p.288)
1790 - listed on 1790 Orange County NC
Census
1800- listed on 1800 Orange County NC
Census 00001(45 and up) 00001 (45 and up)
So, if this guy is 45+ he was born no later than 1755 and is alive in 1800.
One suggestion was that he was the son of William CLENDENIN and Mary of NC.
This doesn't hold water. That Charles CLENDENIN was b. 13 Apr 1759 and not
mentioned in the will of William CLENDENIN of Orange, NC (written in 1790
proved 1801).
Do any of you have any more records on this Charles CLENDENIN? I am
gussing he is a brother of "Old William" of Orange County. I have him born
ca. 1830 County Down,IRE. (no proof).
I think if we can find his connection to William of Orange Co.NC, it would
clear up a few relationship problems.
Thanks for taking the time to read this post. Any ideas/dates on this guy
would be appreciated.

Found this morning:
From The Mexico Ledger, Thurs., Oct. 4, 1883:
"On Sept. 23, 1883, Mrs. Sallie Clendenin, of Santa Fe, Monroe Co. MO.
Mrs. Clendenin was born in Lexington, Ky. Nov. 20, 1800, and was married to Wm. Clendenin in Bourbon county in the year 1822. She came to Missouri in '39, (note - this is hard to read, could it be '59?)and in the year 1836 united with the Christian church. Mrs. Clendenin was the mother of Mrs. Bruce Baldwin of this city[Mexico, Audrain Co., MO]. She was a kind and affectionate mother, a sincere friend to all and especially to those in distress, and a consistent Christian, and, when death stilled the throbbing pulse, she died in the full assurance of a blessed beyond. Children, grieve not, though the clods of the valley hide from mortal view all that remains of the loved one, place your trust that her whom you have so tenderly loved and cherished, has now gone to receive her reward in Heaven, where no ? are spoken, and no farewell word lingers on quivering lips, and no tear dims the right (?) of loving eyes."
I have information on this Clendenin family -- descendants of Charles of VA.
Not my line, but Alexander Clendenin b. 1788 Orange County NC (nephew to my
3rd g-grandfather, Fisher Clendenin) went to MO. Have him on 1850 Federal
Census of Scott Co.VA and on BLM Land records 1856 in MO.

Next succeeding Dr. Dickey, came Alexander Gillfillan, a regular
physician and surgeon. He was a native of Ireland, and most probably
Scotch descent, and was born about 1785, so that when he first came to
New Castle he was a young man about twenty-eight years of age, and his
wife was eighteen. He studied medicine in Washington county, Pa. He
afterwards removed to Pittsburgh, and when the war of 1812 broke out,
entered the army to practice his profession. He remained in the service
until the summer of 1813, when he resigned. It is said that he never
received any compensation for his services, and in addition to his time,
he spent forty or fifty dollars for medicines for sick soldiers. October
21, 1813, he married Miss Elizabeth Patterson, and settled in New Castle
a few weeks subsequently....
His widow, now Mrs. Blackburn, is still living near Mt.
Jackson, at the ripe age of eighty-two years. She was born near
Baltimore, Md., on the 25th day of March, 1795. Her father's name was
John Patterson, and her mother's maiden name Mary Clendenin. Her parents
were married on the 16th of April, 1793.
"The Friends' meeting-house in Drumore was erected in 1816. It is located
one-half mile south of Liberty Square. The land was donated by Jacob Shoemaker, and is a portion of the land purchased by him of Moses Irwin, Jr.. He inherited the same from his father, Moses Irwin, who in the year 1748 took out a patent for three hundred and nine acres of land, and in 1750 another patent for one hundred and fifty acres . Previous to the erection of their present meeting-house the Friends assembled in an old school building, one mile west of the present location, on the south side of the road. Among the oldest members are found the names of Joseph Stubbs, David
Parry, Jacob Shoemaker, Robert Clendenin, Isaac Smith, Isaac Bolton, Joseph Smith, Simon Pennock, George Lamborn, Amos Walton, Jesse Lamborn, James Worral and wife, and Ezekiel Atkinson.

Biographical Sketch of C. C. Clendenin, Laclede County, Missouri
>From "History of Laclede, Camden, Dallas, Webster, Wright, Texas,
Pulaski, Phelps and Dent Counties, Missouri" The Goodspeed Publishing
Company, 1889.
**********************************************************************
C. C. Clendenin, merchant at Lebanon, Mo., and son of Ephraim R. and
Pauline (Conway) Clendenin, was born in Randolph County, Ill., March
25, 1847. The parents were both native of Randolph county, Ill, the
father born in or near Rockwood and the mother born at Old Kaskaskia.
The maternal grandfather, Clement C. Conway, was born in Ireland, and
immigrated to South Carolina at an early date. From there he moved to
Kaskaskia, Ill. He was a hatter by trade, which occupation he followed
the principal part of his life. He died on the Ohio River, in 1852, of
cholera. The grandfather Clendenin died in Randolph County, Ill. He
was engaged in mercantile pursuits for several years in Old Liberty,
and was one of the first business men of that place. He resided on a
farm the most of his time. The father of our subject lived and died in
Randolph county, Ill. In his youth he learned the trade of ship car-
penter, which he followed until 1862, when he enlisted in the late war,
but the quota being full, he was appointed by Lincoln as enrolling
officer for the Southern Illinois District, which position he was fill-
ing at the time of his death, which occurred September 20, 1864. The
mother is still living, and resides in Walnut, Kas. They were the
parents of seven children, four now living: Emma G., wife of James
Miln, of Cairo; Colburn C., Charles M. and Adelle. Those deceased were
named Sydney, Penelope and Clara. C. C. Clendenin was reared in
Liberty (now Rockwood), Ill., where he received a common school educa-
tion. He worked on the farm until the death of his father, in 1864,
when he served an apprenticeship at the trade of stone cutting, which
he followed for twelve years, and worked in the meantime on some of the
largest State buildings in Illinois. He assisted in building the
Springfield State House, the Southern Illinois Insane Asylum, Normal
University of Carbondale, and the penitentiary at Chester. He was con-
tracting for about five years in Illinois. In 1879 he took the con-
tract for all the stone work on St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church,
in Chester, Ill, the finest church building in the county. In 1881 he
took the contract for the stone work for the Shiloh Hill College build-
ing, in Randolph county, Ill., and the insane asylum on the Randolph
county farm. In September, 1881, he came to Lebanon, Mo., and here
engaged in his present business with L. J. Kaffenberger, and the firm
is known as Kaffenberger & Co. Mr. Clendenin was married December 20,
1871, to Miss Maggie L. Gordon, of Jackson county, Ill. To them was
born one child, Etta, whose birth occurred October 23, 1872. He is a
member of the K. L., National Lodge of Combined Industries, and Sons
of Veterans. He is a member of the city council, and president of the
town board. Mr. Clendenin is a strong advocate of organized labor, and
it was the labor element that elected him to the position of city
alderman. He was a delegate to the national convention of the United
Labor party that met at Cincinnati, Ohio, May 15, 1888, which nominated
Streeter and Cunningham for President and vice-president.
Don,
See this is the problem as I see it with this manuscript:
"Mary, daughter of James and Margaret Anderson Clendennin (sic) M. William
Sympson B. 1774 (Don: wrong date) (son of David and Beriah Channa Sympson
(this is wrong also, William, Michael and Mary were children of Henry
Sympson and _____, I THINK their grandfather was David.)"
One fly in the ointment is the fact that Y-12-DNA of
> two men who believe they descend from this William does not match that of
> mine or Willie's.I suspect there may be a flaw in their line of descent. The
> first mutual Clendenin ancestor of Willie and me is John Clendenin born abt.
> 1759."
The two men you refer to are awaiting the results of their upgrades to 37-marker tests.
So what are we supposed to do? Say to anyone who believes that they are descended to James & Margaret through son, William, that there is no way this can be true?
Or what about Josiah and Elizabeth Clendenin Knapp? What do we say to these people?

I realize that most of you probably believe that I'm off on one of my rants again. If the DNA testing is to serve it's proper use as a tool, we have to have a SOLID paper trail. There is nothing wrong with using sources such as Appell & Carter's book, but everything should be verified from original sources if at all possible.

Okay, I agree so far. This is also recorded in Chalkleys Chronicles which is where I got my information.
> The other names of the children comes from a manuscript of Mrs. D. W. Hayes dated December, 1940 and found in the Filson Club of Louisville, Kentucky. Mr. Hayes names additional children Mary Rebeccah , William and Martha 'Patsy'. Other sources maintain Mary and Rebeccah are two separate daughters. The Sympson Bible lists Rebeccah as the wife of William Sympson.

This I will accept; however, if this manuscript was prepared based on a DAR lineage I have to tell you right now that in the past the DAR let slide a whole lot of things that they should have caught.
I will agree that the Sympson Bible corroborates Rebeccah as the wife of William Sympson.
Other sources maintain Mary and Rebeccah are two separate daughters. Does anyone have any proof to offer that these were two different women?
Does anyone have proof to add William and Martha "Patsy" to this family?

His will dated August 27, 1792 and probated in June 1794 names his children and sons-in-law. James and Margaret (Anderson) Clendenin are named here. Recorded in Augusta County Clerks in Will Book 8, page 114.
Also found in Chalkley's Chronicles ...

Again I agree as I believe the record of Margaret's mother's death is also in Tinkling Springs ...

> I have also been given information that James and Margaret were the parents of Eliza(beth) who married Caleb Knapp and Josiah who married Esther/Nancy Livingston.
Can anyone offer proof of these people as children of James and Margaret's?

Does anyone out there have proof of the list of children attributed to this couple? In particular was there a will or estate settlement for James in Kentucky?
Thanks,
Sharon
