As of this date, very little is known about Carolyn Schmidt, wife of John
Buran (Bue) Clendenin. We know that Lillie May Clendenin, Carolyn Schmidt's
youngest child went to Ashland, Kentucky to help settle a small estate of her
mother's. Hallie, Lillie's oldest child desired to marry Sam Bass. Hallie,
Sam and Lillie traveled to Ashland, Ky. in 1925 for Sam and Hallie to be
married. While on this trip, Lillie May contacted persons, whom we do not
know, and received her inheritance from her mother's family, Carolyn had
died when Lillie Mae, her youngest child and daughter, was a very small
child. We know that Carolyn is buried in an unmarked grave at the Historic
Civil War Virginia Chapel at Cedar Grove, West Virginia. George Jackson,
their oldest child and son gave us this information. He also told us that
both of his parents died within a year of each other. Their children Jack,
Mary and Harvey were taken and reared by, Elliott Clendenin and his wife
Rebecca Keffier, their uncle and brother, of John Van Buren (Bue) and
because the census taker did not know exactly how to place them in the
family, listed them as servents, which was very sad..
This is all we know at this time. The question remains, was Carolyn born and
reared in Ashland, Ky. area, as that is the location where Carolyn Schmidt's
estate was settled many years after her death. Again, we just do not know.
Carolyn's life was a tragic one. She was so ill from heart disease that she
was unable to care for her children. Her husband, John Van Buren, was
involved in coal strikes, and was in and out of court. John Van Buren was
charged with the murder of a doctor in Montgomery, WV. in and around 1894.
John (Bu) Van) Buren pleaded his innocence up until his death. The children
were left orphans. John Van Buran was in Moundsville Prison, at Moundsville,
West Virginia, where he later died in 1895. John Van Buren (Bue) died in
prison about one year after being imprisoned. John Van Buren (Bue) was
thirty three @ (33). Carolyn Schmidt died the same year. She was @ thirty
two years old, dying from heart disease. This left four children orphans.
Jack the oldest was eleven (11) years old. The yougest Lillie Mae was @
three (3) years old.
Ben, born 1885 and died March 1, 1890, the son of Carolyn Schmidt and Van
Buren Clendenin fell from the porch of their home and died of a broken neck.
After John Van Buran Clendenin and his wife's death abt. 1895, We found the
children Jack, Harvey, Mary in the Fayette County Census living in Elliott
and Rebecca Clendenin's household. The youngest, Lillie Mae went to live
with Susan (LaMaster) and Elben Carrow. Susan ( LaMaster) the woman who
finished rearing her, as they became sister-in-laws. Susan's (LaMaster)
brother, William Green LaMaster, came to visit his sister, Susan. He met
Lillie Mae and fell in love with her. They married when Lillie Mae Clendenin
was fifteen (15) years old and William Green LaMaster was twenty one (21)
years old.
Lillie Mae Clendenin was my husband's Mother. John Van Buran Clendenin was
my husband's (James W. LaMaster, son of William Green LaMaster and Lillie Mae
Clendenin) maternal grandfather.
Looking for information on Carolyn Schmidt died in Montgomery,
(kanawha/fayette county) West Virginia.
I have no connection to this organization. However, the bracelets are very
similar to those worn by sone of us during the Vietnam era for the POW/MIAs.
Check it out and follow your conscience.
