BTW, I have a John Wesley Clemons, b about 1855 in NC, in my line, too.
Evidence of the work of Asbury and the rest in spreading Methodism in the
early 1800s.
Virginia is the cradle of civilization, isn't it? Can't everyone trace back
to Jamestown? In the beginning...<g>
I think most all of the northeastern NC families are out of Virginia. I've
traced many families down from Virginia through the northeastern counties of
NC and on down into the eastern counties of SC.
I've only been able to trace my Clemons line back to Wake County, NC in
around 1830. One of these days, I hope I can get to the NC Archives and to
some of the county courthouses in that area. I believe that if I'm
successful, I'll end up in Virginia in the 1700s/early 1800s looking for my
Clemons. So far, I have my Samuel Clemons born about 1832 in Wake County NC,
married in Johnston County NC in 1854, living in Robeson County NC in 1860,
some evidence of doing business and living in Marion County SC before 1860,
and killed at the Battle of Battery Wager July 18, 1863. Surviving family
members moved into Marion and Horry Counties of SC.
Some came into SC via Charleston but most came either down the wagon road
from Pennsylvania through Salisbury NC and into SC or drifted down through
the eastern counties of NC. Sorting out and tracking the Clemons, Clemmons,
Clements, Clement, etc of Virginia would solve a lot of genealogy mysteries.
Are the S.Carolina Clemmons family related in any way to the Virginia family?
My John Wesley and Charles Augustin Clemmons were in Kentucky in l8l5 and
then into Tenn. in l8l6 then moved west into Missouri. Census records
however, list their parents as being born in Virginia which would be latest
l790. John Wesley Clemmons was born in l812 and Charles Augustin in l8l6.

My WILLIAM J. CLEMONS was m. to HELLIN BROCKINGTON in Darlington. I don't
know where in S.C. he was born.He was b. in Jan 1855.Relocated to Conway Co
Ar. around 1886.With several families. The BOOZERS, and the
BROCKINGTONS.Children: SARA JANE, PHILLIP, FRAZELLA, OLIVER, WILLIE, MARY,
WHIT.
I had an uncle, Everett Clemons who live in south Carolina. he was in the
service there. he had a daughter and a son. the son's name was rhett
clemons, can't remember the daughter's name. maybe that will help.

There was a family group of Clemonses in the Darlington area. The name of that group has been spelled Clemons, Clements, Clemmons and maybe another couple of variations. I began researching that group a few years ago, thinking that it was my family. I might still have some of that research.
I tracked my Clemons ancestor back from Horry County, SC to Marion County SC to Robeson County SC to Johnston County NC to Wake County NC.
I'll look through my files and see if I still have some information on the Darlington group.
