Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
There were several Smart's in the area, one line in particular it seems he lived beside of - and had some close dealings with. Some conjecture was maybe he was orphaned and adopted by this particular Smart line, but he is not found in any of their Wills.
It was assumed there was only 2 (separate) Smart lines in Rutherford County, NC during the time. But as it turns out, there is evidence of a 3rd Smart line (which seems to have died out), and Hiram would have created a separate (4th) Smart line. He could have been related to the 3rd Smart line (my Cousin Bill Smart found), but no living relatives of this 3rd line we can find for a YDNA test.
There is a female line we have found (from the 3rd Smart line), but YDNA test would be fruitless (we assume).
The search, though daunting, stillcontinues.... (like a 20,000 piece jigsaw puzzle).
One day, maybe... it will be clear.
Troy

Sorry I don't have any information. Your conjecture sounds correct to me.
It happened more than people realize. My Davis ancestor was really
(67/67) a Long. And my Graves was really a Blocker.
Sounds like he went by his mother's surname Clemmons all of his early years
until he was old enough to legally change it himself. Maybe his mother
had married a Smart, so when he changed it, Smart was his choice.
I have decided not to waste my life head-banging to try to find the details
of my Davis/Long relationship. I am thankful to finally understand why I
could never find my Davis line further back than 1811. I think you have
the truth of Hiram's origins. Good job!

Looking for a Clemmons connection...
1) My GG Grandfather was born Sept 14, 1798 (per Family Bible Records, and
headstone).
2) He was born in Tn - per later Census Records (post 1830).
3) Earliest documentation we can find, is from 1818-1819. He was working
on a road construction project (20-21 yrs old). He was listed as a "Chain
Bearer" on the document. His name was listed as "Hiram Clemmons - alias
Smart".
4) Second earliest documentation found, was his NC Marriage bond from 1824
(age 25-26). He is listed on the marriage bond as "Hiram Smart".
5) YDNA test of me and a distant cousin (both of us are descendants of
Hiram - from two of Hiram's sons), match us 67 for 67 markers (100%).
6) Family search puts us in with a group of "Watkins" family members - who
also match up 67 for 67 markers with YDNA.
7) My suspicions are, possibly Hiram was born to a Clemmons woman, and
born out of wedlock to a Watkins man. Strictly conjecture, and could have been
a further back connection.
8) But for some reason, he was listed as Hiram Clemmons... working in
Rutherford County, NC, born in TN, and lived the rest of his life (from 1818,
until death) in Rutherford County, NC (where he is buried).
Any suggestions are welcome.
