Elsie Virginia Clemmer Holland died on January 1, 2010 at Orange Regional Medical Center, Horton Campus, in Middletown, NY after a short illness at age 97.
Elsie was born on October 21, 1912 at the family's 180 acre farm in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley near Staunton, to James Clyde Clemmer and Ella Virginia White Clemmer.
She was raised in the completely self-sufficient lifestyle that farming fostered in that era. The farm specialized in raising cattle, horses and livestock. Life was happy and carefree until tragedy struck in 1928 when her father died suddenly, leaving his 47 year old widow with nine children, six of whom were less than 18 years old. With the onset of the Great Depression and the difficulty of running the farm without her husband, the family migrated to Middletown, NY after learning of employment opportunities at the State Hospital. There, Elsie became a nurse and met Raymond Holland, a young engineer who had also come to work at the hospital from a distant Plattsburg, NY. They were married in 1932.
Life was bustling in Middletown. The economy boomed when the Depression ebbed. The hospital and numerous business and manufacturing facilities provided work to all. Then, WWII commenced. Four of Elsie's brothers fought in Europe. Her mother was named Mother of the Year by the city after the war for contributions to the nation. This was a precursor to the next generation's call to arms. All three of Elsie's sons served in the Vietnam conflict in 1968. Following this, the grandchildren and great-grandchildren came and filled her life with the joy they brought. "My grandchildren are so different from my children, yet very much alike. A certain smile or a look in their eyes brings me back to my own childhood. I can see their beauty with a clarity one generations' distance provides."
Elsie was an All American Girl of the Greatest Generation. America is a great nation because of her and the wonderful hardworking, patriotic citizens of her time. May God bless her, and find a special place in heaven for her.
Elsie was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Raymond; her son, Gerald; her brothers: Lynwood Clemmer, Lewis Clemmer, William Clemmer, Eugene Clemmer and Ray Clemmer; and her sisters: Janie Edwards, Lucy Joseph, Helen Garber and Alice Clemmer. She is survived by sons, John Holland and his wife, Patricia of Middletown and Lt. Col. (USA Ret.) Wayne Holland and his wife, Lillian of Alexandria, VA; grandchildren: Eric Holland, Esq. and his wife, Kristen of Alexandria, VA, Aileen Holland of Charlottesville, VA, Bethany Luz and her husband, Eric of Brick, NJ, and Allison Tisani and her husband, Todd of Manahawken, NJ; and great-grandchildren: Kathryn Holland, Natalie Holland, Lucas Luz, Eric Luz, Miles Tisani, Matthew Tisani and Kayla Tisani.
