Gaston County, North Carolina: A Brief History
By Rita Wehunt-Black and published in 2008
Ms. Wehunt-Black narrates the Klemmer massacre and subsequent abduction of Valentine and Lorentz by a Delaware Indian war party on August 20, 1756.
http://books.google.com/books?id=XKSrPitbbq8C&pg=PA61&dq=Valentine+Klemme...
Several family tree sources have listed the baptismal date for George Valentine Klemmer as being May 6, 1747. However, the Rev. Michael Schlatter recorded a very detailed account of his visit to the Conewego congregation (now known as Christ Reformed Church of Christ near Littlestown, PA) and actually baptized George Valentine along with 20 other children under the "open heaven" on May 5, 1747.
The following is an excerpt from "The life of Rev. Michael Schlatter: with a full account of his travels and labors among the Germans". Published in 1857 by Henry Harbaugh
On the 2d of May, I arrived at Yorktown, sixteen miles farther. This is a town on the Codorus, which was newly laid out six years ago. Here and in the region around I found a large Reformed congregation, which has heretofore been served by Rev. Jacob Lischy. After I had, on the 3d, preached a sermon in the church preparatory to a worthy participation of the Lord's Supper, and promised, by the help of God, to return on the 10th to administer the Holy Communion, I started on the 4th for Conewago, a distance of twenty-nine miles, where, on the same day, I held a preparatory service in a school-house, and, on the following day, I administered the Holy Supper to eighty members, and under the open heaven administered holy baptism to twenty-one children because the house could not contain the multitude that assembled. When I here opened my commission to the people, it was listened to with great joy and with the tenderest emotions by this shepherdless flock.
They at once acquiesced in it, and forty-five heads of families bound themselves, by signing their names, that they would raise as much as they could as salary for a minister, namely, twelve
On the 6th, I journeyed forty miles farther to Monocacy, where, on the following day, I held preparatory service to the Holy Communion, and baptized twenty-six children, and, on the 8th, administered the most excellent Supper of the Lord,1 with peculiar interest and much edification, to eighty-six members.

Is anyone familiar with the First Reformed Church of Philadelphia? The Rev. Michael Schlatter, the man responsible for baptizing George Valentine Klemmer in Littlestown, PA, also baptized Maria Elizabeth Klemmer, daughter of Henry and Anna Maria.

Can anyone answer Sharon Dean Lee's question about one Hans Clemmer and Valentine Clemmer of Philadelphia? I believe it impossible that this was her ancestor, George Valentine "Felty" Klemmer of Littlestown, PA because he died in October 1785. The fact that this Valentine was associated with Franconia makes me think that he is of the Mennonite Klemmer/Clemmer family. However, I find it difficult to believe that a Mennonite would serve in the local militia unless pressed into duty.

Does anyone know who the Hans Clemmer is that is listed as a warrantee
of land in a Philadelphia County in 1734? I am a descendant of George
Valentine (Felty) Clemmer and Margaretha Elizabeth Dettero through Carl
Burnice Clemmer of Loudon Co, TN.
I also found a Valentine Clemmer on the 1785 and 1786 Militia Rolls in
Philadelphia County, PA. (see below) Does anyone know this Valentine
Clemmer? Could this be the Valentine who made out his will in 1785,
perhaps as a result of joining the milita?

PREFATORY NOTE.
The lists of warrantees of land in the several counties of the Commonwealth
are copied from the original record books in the Land Office of the Department
of Internal Affairs. Only the names of the warrantees with the number of acres
and dates of warrant are given. They will serve however as a valuable guide to
all desiring information from that Department. The orthography of the surnames
has not been changed, a literal copy being made with all the errors.
Individuals must make the corrections for themselves. It is the duty of the
faithful archivist to follow the originals in all cases. It will be seen that
the dates of warrants begin with the opening of the Land Office at the time when
William Penn's children arrived at maturity. For a guide in the location of
land warrants the Editor appends the organization of counties and those from
which formed. This is necessary. For instance it may be stated that Lebanon
county was formed in 1813 from a portion of Dauphin, and that Dauphin was formed
from a part of Lancaster in 1785; and Lancaster was formed in 1729, from a part
of Chester. As these warrants are dated after 1730, prior to 1785, those
relating to Dauphin will be found arranged in Lancaster county. For Lebanon,
prior to 1785, the records will be found under Lancaster county, and from 1785
to 1813, under Dauphin county. It is necessary, therefore, to observe these
points in making any investigation whatsoever. It may be here noted, in
conclusion, especially in this volume that prior to the lists of Cumberland
county a typographical error may be observed in any instances where a comma is
used between the figures instead of a period. For instance, 114 with a comma
after and then 64 (114,64), does not mean 114 acres, and also 64 acres, but it
means 114 acres and 64 one-hundredth (114.64 acres). The period should supplant
the comma.

On site at the location near the mouth of Conococheague Creek, Maryland where Johan Ludwig Klemmer's family and neighbors were brutally attacked and murdered by the Delaware Indians on August 20, 1756. His two sons, George "Velte" Valentine and Lorentz "Lawrence", were captured and held (actually, they were assimilated into the tribe) for 7 years. Their mother, Maria Elizabeth Böckel attempted an escape and was murdered the following day (August 21).

Christ United Church
of Christ near Littlestown, Pennsylvania is the church where
George Valentine "Velte" Klemmer was baptized by the Rev. Michael
Schlatter in Feb 1747. We know that Valentine died at the age of 38 because of his last will and testament and estate settlement documents. Dr. Charles Glatfelder of the Gettysburg Lutheran Theological Seminiary stated in 2002 that in the late eighteenth century, people were always buried in the church yard and not on their personal property. Also, wooden grave markers were common. It is our and Dr. Glatfelder belief that Valentine is buried at Christ United Church of Christ and Len Clemmer has received permission to erect a marker on the property, which some day will become a reality.

Memorial service held for LAPD detective Susan Clemmer
A life remembered
The LAPD Honor Guard folds a flag for the family members of LAPD Detective Susan Clemmer at memorial services held at the Eternal Valley mortuary chapel on Thursday. Clemmer killed herself in the lobby of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station on July 6.
Before her suicide, Los Angeles Police Department Detective Susan Clemmer had aced a job interview with Gangs and Narcotics Captain Kevin McCarthy, leaving him deeply impressed with her education, passion and talent.
He arrived at his office the next day to find a letter on his desk.
“It was from Susan, apologizing because she felt she had let me down in the (interview),” McCarthy recalled to more than 100 people gathered at Clemmer’s memorial service at the Eternal Valley mortuary chapel on Thursday. “She really thought she did a bad job in the interview, when, in fact, she couldn’t have done better.”
His was one of several stories told by colleagues and relatives that painted a picture of a sensitive and caring but guarded woman who always put others first and poured herself into her work.
Clemmer, 41, of Valencia, killed herself on July 6 in the lobby of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. It stunned those who knew her.
“She would never tell people if she was having a problem,” said Detective Lisa Wong, a close friend and detective in Clemmer’s unit.
Clemmer’s 19-year career with the Los Angeles Police Department began in the national spotlight.
She had been a key witness in the trials of the officers charged in the Rodney King beating that led to the Los Angeles Riots of 1992. The then-rookie beat officer rode with King in the ambulance and later testified that he was laughing and spat blood on her uniform.
The Milwaukee native moved with her family to El Paso, Texas and later the Santa Clarita Valley.
A photograph slideshow during the service traced Clemmer’s life:
In one, she was a tiny infant. Another, a little girl on Santa Claus’s lap. One photo showed her wearing an orange lifeguard uniform — she was an avid swimmer and a lifeguard at Castaic Lake.
Clemmer as a fresh-faced Los Angeles police officer posed for another shot. And, finally, she grinned proudly for the camera next to a “sold” sign in front of her Valencia home.
A cadre of LAPD officers honored Clemmer with a three-volley salute and presented a folded U.S. flag to her parents.
Her cousin, Rev. Susan Knowlton, spoke for the family and described her as a detective through and through, who enjoyed nothing more than spending holidays and playing games with her relatives. Her relatives and fellow police officers alike made reference to her smile.
“I have her smile and the rest of our squad will have her smile for the rest of our lives,” said Detective Kenny Bryant, who worked directly with her.
Bryant turned to Clemmer’s gray-haired mother and father, who sat quietly in the front row during the service.
“Thank you for allowing us to have Susan the time that we had her,” he said. “Thank you for sharing her with us.”
