It would be really good if some of this branch could
get involved with a DNA project, as Jeff has suggested.
I think that we will then be able to nail down more than the
ancestry of the branch that came south in 1780's.

How did we come to know so much about our Klemmer ancestors in Germany and Switzerland? Much of our debt of gratitude belongs to Mrs. Betsy Clemmer Grant, a native of Chattanooga, TN. Nearly a quarter century ago, Betsy had the opportunity to live in the Phalz region of Germany, which enabled her to thoroughly research our family.
Betsy compiled a booklet, "Klemmer Research in Germany", that is freely accessible in PDF format on the web at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clemmerkin/books/klemmer_researc...

Kristen,
Considering that your ancestor, Jacob Clemmer, was born in York County, places a very high probability that your branch somehow descends from Johan Ludwig Klemmer and wife Anna Maria Böckel. Is Jacob your most distant traceable Clemmer ancestor? If so, can you give us more details as to where and when Jacob died and where his descendants moved?
Perhaps you can convince either your father, a brother, or male Clemmer cousin to participate in the Klemmer/Clemmer DNA Genealogy Project. A close match on the 37 marker test will at least confirm your Clemmer family descends from one of the four boys (Jacob, Valentine, Lorentz, and George) orphaned by the Delaware Indian ambush of 20 Aug 1756.
You can request one or more free DNA collection kits from the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation by calling 1-800-344-7643 or submitting a web form at http://www.smgf.org/pages/request_kit.jspx. Sorenson covers 100% of the costs, including return shipping. Three of Valentine's descendents have already submitted their DNA to the project.

Very interesting data you have collected re Elizabeth Duttero, wife of
Valentine Klemmer. Thanks for sharing it. Dorothy creely

See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
Hal,
Like you, I am also a direct descendant of Valentine "Felty" Klemmer. My evidence reveals that Valentine only entered into one marriage though, that being to Margaret Elizabeth Duttera (Dotterer/Duttero). The late Charles W. Hite and Len Clemmer uncovered quite a bit of documentation concerning her movements down south in North Carolina after Valentine's death in Oct 1785 and her subsequent marriage to William M. Hancock on 1 Mar 1792 in Rowan County. See http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clemmerkin/books/clemmer_family/... for more details.
I've twice visited Christ Reformed Lutheran Church in Littlestown and found Duttera grave stones to be more prevalent than any other family name. See photos at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~vstern/christ_reformed/christ_re....
The Duttera's were active in Christ Reformed Church from its incarnation and it's not inconceivable that Valentine met his future wife, Margaret Duttera, through his involvement in the church after he returned to Littlestown following his release from Indian captivity.
Christ Church (Reformed) was organized in 1747 by Rev. M. Schlatter, a
missionary from Switzerland, and the first church was built in 1755, rebuilt in
1798 and in 1878. The names of the first members are unknown, but there is a
record of baptisms as early as May, 1747. The elders, in 1798, when the present
substantial brick church was built, were Andrew Shriver and Jacob Parr. They,
together with Conrad Duttera, Ludwig Mouse and Jacob Will, constituted the
building committee. John Dysert was secretary. He was also the teacher of the
parochial school. The church was incorporated in 1828, the charter bearing the
signature of Gov. Schutlze, and is dated March 5, 1828. The first trustees
elected under the charter were John Wintrode, Michael Crouse, George Will,
John
Young, Samuel Shriver, John Snyder, George Duttera, Christian Heller and John
Study. Jacob Keller was appointed treasurer. At the first communion in 1747
there were eighty communicants. The number of members at present is 350. The
pastors who have served this congregation are named as follows: Revs. M.
Schlatter, Jacob Lischy, T. Frankenfield, J. C. Steiner, W. Otterbein, C. Lange,
C. L. Beohm, J. C. Gobrecht, C. Helfenstein, J. H. Wiestling, F. W. Bindeman, S.
Gutelius, J. Sechler, J. M. Clemens, Casper Scheel, John Ault and J. Kretzing,
the present minister. The location of the church is two miles east of
Littlestown on the Hanover road on lands deeded by the Penns in 1759 to Michael
Will in trust for the German Reformed Church. Value of church property,
including church, cemetery, farm and buildings and parsonage in Littlestown, is
$15,000 to $20,000. Dates of church buildings: built of logs in 1755;
substantially of brick in 1798; and rebuilt and enlarged in 1878. The
rebuilding of 1878 cost about $8,000.

Colonel Boquet secured the release of Lawrence and Valentine Klemmer in November 1764. They had been held captive, or more likely integrated and adopted into the Lenape (Delaware) tribe, since 20 August 1756. They are listed as "Lodowick Clemn" and "Felty Clemn". Also notice another male, "Daniel Clemn". There are two male Hicks who are quite probably the sons of the murdered George Hicks from the funeral train ambush. -jjc

Hal,
Perhaps Barbara is the widow of Michael Totherow. If you look in
midatlantic.rootsweb.com/familyhart, Joy Wilkerson has submitted the
information that Michael died in 1813, enroute from Tennessee to
Missouri. Suppose that widow Barbara Shrum Totherow returned to NC,
where she married George Dyer the next year, with her brother John Shrum
as bondsman.

Hal,
You have an interesting question. Bynum's book, Marriage Bonds of
Tryon and Lincoln Counties, NC, published 1929, has this bond:
Dyer, George and Detherow, Barbara; bondsman John Shrum; bond date
28 May 1814; witness James T. Alexander.
Who is George Dyer? I don't know. There are two other Dyer grooms
and two Dyer brides in the first third of the 19th century in Lincoln
Co., NC. The family seems to have left the area.
I do not find the name Dryer in the marriage bond book.
Now, who is Barbara Detherow? With a marriage date this early, I
would wonder if she were a child of John Totherow and Mary Hoffman. They
had fourteen children, almost all of whom had Lincoln County marriage
bonds, with dates from 1797 to 1824. Obviously, Barbara is unlikely to
be a grandchild of this couple. The first marriage of a son was of
Michael Totherow to Barbara Shrum in 1798. Our Kin does not have any
information about Michael's descendants.
Maybe Barbara is a niece of John Totherow. Or maybe Barbara is
the daugther Barbara of John Totherow and Mary Hoffman, whom Our Kin
states married Daniel Stamey. There is no marriage bond for this
couple. While there is a Stamey family in Lincoln and Catawba Counties,
I have not found this couple (but have not searched intently).
Our Kin says: "Barbara Totherow, daughter of Jno. Totherow, the
pioneer, married Daniel Stamey, and I think they also lived in Lincoln
County, but I have scant history of this family also. Among other
children they had two daughters, Ann and Katie."
Where did this couple live? Did they have children?

Mountain Discoveries Magazine mentions the abducted boys, Valentine and Lawrence Klemmer, though some of their facts are inaccurate. The boys were captive for more than 8 years (Aug 1756 - Nov 1764) and I believe they spent the majority of that time in present day Ohio. Hi Dorothy. Thanks for responding again. As you might suspect, I am again
working the DETTRO & CLEMMER fam in 1750-1850 era of Rowan Co, NC.
I have not found any direct CLEMMERs in Rowan Co, NC T/L, cen or land
ownership records until I found this Jacob CLEMER -
Rowan Co, NC, Deed BK 18:282, On 2-25-1801, Jacob Hartman to Peter HENKLE
for $350, 150a, on Frys Ck,, adjacent Henry PETERS, and the Morvanian Line.
Part of land conveyed from Devault Mock to Thomas PERKINS [13:027], and from
him to this grantor[13:337]. Witness: Jacob Clemer, John MONROE. Proved by
CLEMER Febr. Court, 1802
One would suspect that he was there for a few yrs to have gained
wit/proving stature. The HENKLE name sounds familiar?? Are they or the
others connected to our families??
But, my gf Margaret DETTRO/TOTHEROW CLEMMER (widow of Valentine Felty
CLEMMER who d 1785 in Petersburg,Germany Township, York, PA (& sister to
Balzer DETTRO in Rowan Co, NC and John DETTRO in Lincoln Co, NC) arr Rowan
Co for a decade ca 1790.
Could I see your current fam sheet on your Jacob. Is he Jacob the bro to my
gf Valentine Felty?
