Agnes,
I do believe you are correct. Lawrence eventually settled in the Cumberland
area and this Jacob Clemmer was probably his son or grandson.

Dear Jeff,
Possibly this is the son of Lawrence Clemmer, one of the four
brothers (Jacob/Caspar, George Valentine, Lawrence and George) originally
from York Co., PA, who died in Allegany County, MD in 1808. Apparently
his widow died around 1820 and the five children sold the lot (on Blocher
Street at the time, now renamed Bedford Street, near Centre Street) in
Cumberland.
Lawrence had two sons, Jacob, who remained in Allegany County, and
Lewis who moved to Fayette Co., PA. So I believe this tax collector was
Jacob, unless possibly a son of Jacob.
I've seen some reference that Jacob Clemmer lived in an area now
in Garrett Co., MD, but Garrett County was not established until 1872, so
that presents no difficulty with his being an Allegany County tax
collector in 1845.
