Dear Phil,
Yes, you belong to this large Clemmer family. You will see your
family names from earlier generations.
George Butler Clemmer was the son of Upton Lawrence Clemmer, 1816 -1888,
and Adelia Massey.
Upton Lawrence Clemmer was the son of Lewis Clemmer and Christina Butler,
whose father was John
George Butler, the first Lutheran minister resident in Cumberland,
Allegany Co., MD.
Lewis Clemmer, born after 1790 and died 6 June 1867, with burial in the
Presbyterian Church Cem., Uniontown, PA, was the son of Lawrence Clemmer.
He served in the War of 1812.
Lawrence Clemmer, born about 1751 and died before 25 Mar 1808 in Allegany
Co., MD, was the son of Johann Ludwig Clemmer and Maria Elizabeth
Boeckel, the immigrants.
Johann Ludwig Clemmer had four sons:
1) Jacob Casper, who lived in Fayette Co., PA
2) George Valentine, who was baptized in Christ Church, Littlestown, PA
in 1747, and died in York Co., PA in 1785; his widow and children moved
to NC, where she is believed to have had brothers living. Many
descendants still live in Gaston Co., NC, while others are in eastern TN
and other southern states.
3) Lawrence, who moved from York Co., PA to Allegany Co., MD, perhaps by
way of Frederick Co., MD. Lawrence and wife Mary had two sons and three
daughters.
4) George Ludwig, who moved from York Co., PA to Rockingham Co. and
Rockbridge Co., VA. One son remained in VA, while the other three sons
settled in southern Ohio. There were several daughters.
George Valentine and Lawrence were held as Indian captives during the
French and Indian War. After the war they were reunited with their older
and younger brothers.
My descent is from George Valentine, but coincidentally we live in
Allegany Co., MD, where Lawrence lived.

Fayette County, Pennsylvania.

Dear John,
There were MANY Bairds in Cumberland Co., PA and in Franklin
County (formed from Cumberland Co.) in the early days of settlement
there. That would be a good place to look for yours in Beaver Co., PA.
There are one or two books available, I believe.
I descend from both Baird and Clemmer families in Gaston Co., NC
(no intermarriages there). The Clemmers were from York Co., PA, while my
Bairds may have come from Cumberland Co., PA In my case, the grandfather
Baird came to NC along with the father and children, so there aren't many
records available in PA. The oldest son possibly served with Braddock's
expedition, and remained in/returned to PA/MD. He died in Washington
Co., MD in 1791. The oldest son's son came to NC in 1779 to visit
relatives, and got involved in some Revolutionary battles, but returned
to MD and then settled in KY, according to his Revolutionary War pension
statement.
