NOTES FOR: Jacob Clemmer b. Abt. 1743
SOURCE: Point Marion... from the beginning, Fayette County, Pennsylvania
COMPILED BY: Community Civic Organization
The Clemmer family in Springhill - Point Marion area was founded by Jacob
Clemmer. He had been born about 1743 in eastern Pennsylvania. He was the son
of Lugwig and Ann Elizabeth Klemmer and grandson of Henrick and Catharina
Klemmer. The Klemmers were Anabaptist and members of the Reformed Church.
Their ancestors appear to have been Protestants who had fled from France into
Switzerland. They were eventually forced out of Switzerland to Germany. From
Germany they came to America about 1730. After their arrival in America the
name Klemmer evolved into Clemmer.
Jacob Clemmer and his younger brother, George, were raised in York County,
Pennsylvania by their mother's relatives. It was here that the Clemmers and
Blossers became friends. (There is a tradition in the Clemmer family that
their friendship with the Blossers went back to Switzerland).
Jacob Clemmer was thirteen years old when his parents were killed. Somehow he
escaped capture and death. Jacob can be found in both church and tax records
in Hopewell Township, York County, Pennsylvania.
In the late 1790's the Clemmers moved to Springhill Township. They may have
accompanied the Blossers who also moved about the same time. In 1800 Jacob
Clemmer is found in the 1800 Springhill Census. In 1801 the elder John
Blosser sold Jacob Clemmer 101 acres. It is believed this land was on the
south side of what is now the Fallen Timbers Road.
Jacob Clemmer went by the nickname Jasper as did his son Jacob. Sometime the
old records even spell his name as Casper, which I believe is just a
misspelling of Jasper. Jasper has been carried sown as a name in several
branches of the family.
Jacob and Anna Barbara Clemmer both died between 1820 and 1830. The exact
dates of their deaths are not known. Thew are probably buried in the
Cagey-Blosser Cemetery in Greater Point Marion.
Jacob and Anna Barbara Clemmer have five known children.
NOTES FOR: Johan Ludwig Klemmer b. Abt. 1715
SOURCE: Point Marion... from the beginning, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.
COMPILED BY: Community Civic Organization
The Ludwig Clemmer family was living near what is Littlestown, Pennsylvania
by 1747, which was then post of York County. About 1752 the Clemmers moved
into Maryland and settle in the Conococheague Settlement. ON Augst 20, 1756,
the Clemmers and their neighbors were returning home from the funeral of the
Clemmer's young daughter when they were attacked by a party of fifteen
Indians. This was the French and Indian War period. Five men in the party
including Lug wig Clemmer were killed. Ann Elizabeth and two of her sons,
Valentine and Lawrence, were captured and carried off by the Indians. Later
Valentine and Lawrence returned home but Ann Elizabeth Clemmer was never
hound. It was believed she was murdered soon after capture.

The Christian Clemmers of Bucks County predate the Henry Clemmers of
Montgomery County. The relationships between these two families has
never been
definitely ascertained. Henry Clemmer and the Montgomery County
Clemmers and
Christian Clemmers of the Bucks Co is even more puzzzling when the
relationship of any of the Clemmers is considered with the famous first
Mennonite Bishop in America, Bishop FelteValentine Clemmer, who it is
said arrived in America, 1717
It is likely that some relationships existed by reason of
“family tradition"
and the fact that the Christian names of the early descendants of the
Montgomery County Clemmers and those of the Bucks County. Clemmers are
almost ldentical.
Other than Bishop Valentine the earliest Clemmer I have found
is
Christian Clemmer1697?-1759?:

I agree, as I found that the Maria was born in Montgomery County,
Pennsylvania. She was the wife of Henrich(Henry) of Franconia.

I have found a marriage record for one Johannes Kramer Clymer (b. 1767) and
Elizabeth Gerhart, married at St. Michaels and Zion Lutheran Church,
Philadelphia on 14 NOV 1789 . Johannes' father Baltasar, was originally a
Kramer. Why would Baltasar change his surname from Kramer to Clymer? What
are the relations, if any, to our Klemmer ancestors who attended the same
church? Is it possible that Johann Heinrich's family also changed the
spelling of their surname to Clymer? Just some thoughts to ponder.

Leon; I also agree with you. though I do believe that there was a
Mennonite branch of the Clemmer/Klemmer family in Montbeliard region in
France, at same time as my own branch . I speculate that the trauma of the
St. Bartholomew's Eve massacre radicalized some of them, to accept going to
their own defense. And this attitude was carried along in the generations.
Though possibly with some ambivalence. Dorothy
Dorothy, thanks for the data.------------------The ship in 1730 had Andreas
and Heinrich Klemmer, both found in the Lutheran Church records of
Philadelphia. They were NOT Mennonites, and the Heinrich Klemmer of the same
time period living in Franconia, PA was a Mennonite. Also the tombstone
birth date of Heinrich Clemmer the Mennonite make him too young to be the
Heinrich Clemmer of Friedelsheim Germany. Charles

Charles,
The record I recently discovered was of a marriage between Heinrich Klemmer
and Anna Adams. This was in Sep 1773. Heinrich, the Elder, if still alive,
would have been 85 years old. In my opinion, Heinrich, the Younger, might be
Andreas' son. We may never know for sure, but maybe a yet undiscovered
document will shed some light.

Charles: I would not say that to be the case. Somewhere in my notes is a
record from the church in Philadelphia you mentioned and a record of the
marriage of Ludwig Klemmer and Anna Elizabetha Boeckels in Meisenheim,
Germany. Ludwig had been left behind in Germany (Friedelsheim) when his
father and brother immigrated to the new world in 1730. Heimrich's father
had died in 1728 in Friedelsheim, and I speculate that Ludwig had been left
behind to stay with his grandmother, until she died. He probably left
shortly after her death, though her death date is not known. Additionally,
Casper Cleigner, a son of Ludwig who was not captured, went to Philadelphia
in 1777(?) to declare his loyalty . Ludwig's wife, Anna Elizabeth Boeckel,
had a brother in Littlestown, am Uncle in Littlestown, cousins, and perhaps
other relative, whose relationship is not now known. Jacob Rohrbach was
married
to her cousin. It is possible that there were many in Littlestown who were
from Friedelsheim/Meisenheim. Dorothy
There is a Heinrich and his wife Maria buried in the Franconia Meeting
Cemetery, it has been assumed that this is the Heinrich of the
Alexandria and Ann ship.
This also makes Heinrich a bigamist for he left his wife in Germany.
I have maintained that this is NOT the Heinrich of the Alexander and
Ann. I believe the Heinrich of that ship went south, he was a Luthern
not a Mennonite..
Later his wife did come to America but did not come to Franconia.
So, save your money
I quote
" Johann Henrick Klemmer, son of Jacob and Anne Catharinia was
christened in the Reformed Church of Friedelsheim, June 13, 1688.
This is 12 years before the recorded date of his birth on his
tombstone, in the Franconia Meetinghouse Cemetery, (1700).
Jacob, his father had immigrated to the Palatinate area of
Germany from Zurich, Switzerland under the name of Hans Jacob Klimmer.
He married one of Hans Jakob Pfaffmann's daughters on the 17th of
September 1678, in Friedelsheim.
Henrick married Catherina Davernier, widow of Michael Davernier
on 16 September 1710. They had a son, Johann Ludwig Klemmer, January
24, 1720. "

I found a grave stone at a mennonite church just outside of Harleysville,
Pa. It mentions Heinrich and his wife Maria on the tombstone coming to
America on the Alexander & Ann. This information was documentated in a book
located in the library of the Bucks County Historical Society in Doylestown,
Pa.

I have found one additional marriage record of a Heinrich Klemmer and Anna
Adams twenty years later than what has been documented at the Klemmer site
at http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/4340/Heinrich.htm.
They were married on Sep 29, 1773.
I believe this Heinrich was the grandson of the immigrant Heinrich who
debarked in Philadelphia on Sep. 5, 1730. However, I may be wrong. Does
any member of this group have a pedigree chart with Heinrich and Anna Adams?
