Message Board Post:
Keith...thanks for your reply. I can provide you with lots of William Elmore
information.
First, I was wondering had you tried to figure out who the parents of James Elmore were
previously? How solid is the 1802 birthdate of James. Do you know where the Costners
lived when James married?
What would you like to know about William? He was born in Virginia, probably Lunenburg
County, to John Elmore in 1759. He moved as a teenager with his family to Orange
County NC where he enlisted for 3 1/2 enlistments (each three months) to fight against
the
British and their local supporters. he gives a lengthy deposition during his request for
a
pension..mentioning the battle of Camden and several other incidents in the "Southern
Campaign". His brother-in-law serves as a witness to his service and vice versa.
William married Mary Rippy in 1784 in Orange county. I have found him in the greater
Lincoln County area (near the Rippys in southern Cleveland/Ruterford County)area as
early as 1792. he recieved a land grant near Dallas NC in 1803. He is in the Lincoln
County census in 1800 with 6 boys and 4 girls (hence I'm curious about James birth year
of
1802). In 1810 and 1820 he is in "Indian Land" South Carolina just below Charlotte. I
found him on the ledger books of a store in 1811-12 in that vicinity. By 1830 he is back
in
Lincoln County and files for a pension in 1832. He dies in 1836. I can't find his
grave. As
late as the 1850s some of his descendents ask their congressman to look into his pension
payments and the post office is Dallas NC BUT their names are missing! That is off the
top of my head. If you have specific questions, just ask.
Other important Elmore documents include the marriage of Edward Elmore to Betsy Smith
in 1804, an early deed by Jesse Elmore to Valentine Clemmer in which I think the land
grant property was sold. The 1827 marriage bond of William Elmore (randles son) to
Elizabeth Cloninger and a William Elmore (son of Edward) is the Groomsman. Good luck,
Larry

Dale Morris Swarner
"Born to Mr, and Mrs. George Clarence Swarner.at 11 o'clock Thursday, Feb. 5th, a fine
eight pound son, whom they have named Dale Morris. This little bud of promise welcome to
home and heart, makes the home complete and the heart full of father and mother love."
Dale Morris Swarncr of Pasco passed away peacefully on Monday, May 6, 2002 with his
loving family at his bedside. Dale was born on February 5th, 1925 to George Clarence
Swarner and Ava Margaret Clemmer Swarner in Hartford Kansas.
Dale was 12 years old when he and his family moved to Wendall, Idaho where he resided
until he graduated from high school. He entered the Navy on December 29th, 1943 during
World War II and served on the USS Thetis Bay, a small aircraft carrier. When asked how
long he was in the service he said "2 years, 3 months and 27 days." From kamikaze
attacks, combat, typhoons, meeting a high school friend in the middle of the Pacific,
utter boredom, to being in the middle of the Pacific at the surrender of Japan; it was an
unforgettable experience. He claimed the reasons
he joined the Navy were, "not wearing a neck tie and having a bed and warm food (unless
we had to swim)." After being discharged, he worked a year and then entered the
University of Idaho in Moscow, where he met Joann Yvonne Place, a fellow student and
future wife
"Shortly after we were married, I had an old car - a 1936 Chevrolet - which had to be
moved because it was parked at a student dormitory. I hooked a chain around the bumper,
got in the car and told my wife to put it in gear and pull it out with her car. She put
it in gear, hit the gas and went down the road dragging the bumper and leaving me and the
ear sitting. When we managed to survive that, shortly after our marriage, we thought we
would probably make it." Dale and Joann celebrated their 50th anniversary on November
4th, 1999 and have resided in Pasco for
the past 48 years.
Dale was a Washington State Department of Transportation Engineer and the office engineer
on many of the major highway projects in this area including the 1-182 Twin Bridges
between Richland and Franklin County. He retired in 1987 after 30 years with the
Department of Transportation. Prior to working for the DOT he farmed, worked in
construction, operated heavy equipment, leveled land and hauled trailers throughout the
northwest.
After retirement he was active in Project Literacy, tutoring adults and children. Dale
and Joann enjoyed driving to various destinations across the United States to see family
friends and meet with shipmates at the annual Thetis Bay Reunions. A mutual interest in
family history and genealogy led to trips where they visited cousins, who they had met
for the first time and became close friends. They toured and took photos of churchyards,
cemeteries, libraries, and locations where their ancestors had lived. As a useful hint to
anyone checking our family history: Joann Yvonne Place was born in Bowman. ND and is the
daughter of Edward Milton Place and Lula
Almira Anderson Place.
Dale was a member of the Ameriean Legion Post #34 Elks Lodge No. 2755, Moose Lodge #482,
Richland Riverside Rotary and served on the Retired Public Employees Council. He was a
long-time member of Pasco First Lutheran Church.
Dale is best remembered by his family for his strength, courage, persistence, sense of
humor, laughter, twinkling blue eyes, faith in God, long drives in the Cadillac, cherry
picking, trips for ice cream, Saturday drives, rides on the back of his wheelchair with
red handlebars, being a hottie, not holding grudges, trips around the block and the mall,
being a guinea pig, "you smell purrty," stink juice Natural Light, thumper bird,
growling, "pull up your landing gear," love for watching his grandkids play sports, being
good lookin, naked angel food cake, crossword puzzles, Juicy Fruit gum, being a stickler
for table manners, "try it," 39 and holding, Old Spice,
patience while driving people around, dangerous card tactics, teaching his kids the rules
of the road, "Yakety Sax" and his love for all types of music.
Dale is survived by his wife Joann, daughters Kathy Latham, husband Jesse of Richland;
Patricia Cabaldon, husband Larry of Rancho Santa Margarita, CA; and Jan Ulmen husband
Roger of Kennewick. Dale has four granddaughters: Tara Latham, Michelle Ulmen, Melissa
Ulmen and Shanna Latham, all of whom have lived in the Tri-Cities since birth and have
spent their time knowing, loving and winding him around their little fingers. His step
grandchildren include
Lauren, Christopher and Dylan Cabaldon; getting to know the three of them during numerous
visits was a wonderful blessing. His nephew, Mike Baker, wife Peggy and their daughters
(his
great nieces) Stephanie and Kimberly Baker have become like granddaughters to him. All
of his grandchildren held a special place in his heart.
He is survived by his brother George Swarner, wife Dorothy of Twin Falls. ID: sister
Pearl Harshbarger, husband Gary of Russellville, AL; brother-in-law Erling Place of
Plummer, ID; sister-in-law Ruth Pierson, husband Bob; and sister-in-law Helen Evans,
