Joann: TheClemmers were Evalgelische or Reform Faith, not LUtheran, not
Catholic, the faith of Zwingli (and others)of Zurich, Switzerland. They were
contemporaneous with Lutherans, but had doctrinal differences. The Clemmers
ahd had gone to Affoltern am Albis, near Zurich, following their flight from
France, about 1566. That is when the Clemmer names first appear in the
Affoltern church records. Their flight occasioned by the ten year
persecution of Protestants in France, cluminating in St. Bartholomews Eve
Massacre in 1572. The Clemmersmay have been Mennonites in France, or
Huegenots ()John Calvin, French Reformer. There were Protestants at the time
in Bern and in Zurich area.
They began migreating to Friedelsheim in about 1660-70. Typically in Germany
of lthat time, there would be a chiurch established and all records kept
there, e.g. at Meckenheim, Gronau, Friedelsheim. Meckenheim was probably the
first in the area, and shared pastors ;with the other smaller parishes. I
hope you receive lots of information on Felty (Valentine) So much work has
been done on thisfamily. It is extremely interesting. Dorothy
Joann, Ludwigshafen is a large city on the west bank of the Rhine River in
the Palantine region, the most southern part being the Pfalz. Mechenheim,
Gronau, Alsheim, Friedelsheim are all towns just west of Ludwigshaffen. My
guess is Lutheran churches, but only a guess. Charles
This is the lazy way out to ask the Clemmer List. But maybe others have the
same question.
I am trying to compile all the information we have on the early Clemmers for
my children. (I descend from Valentine (Felty) Clemmer (1747-1785) and
Elizabeth Margaret Tetherow.)
Info I've gleaned from the internet indicates the Mechenheim Church registry
says that Johann Ludwig Clemmer "is the legimate son of Johann Heinrich
Clemmer, former inhabitant of Gronau, now of Philadelphia."
Where is the Mechenheim Church? Is it Catholic or Lutheran?
Where is Gronau?
Or is it Gronau-Alsheim, Germany?
Apparently there is a record in the Alsheim Church, Germany for the marriage
of Johann Heinrich Clemmer to Catherine Davernier (widow of Michael
Davernier). Is that a Catholic or Lutheran, or Mennonite church?
I have also written down that the Clemmers were from Friedelsheim, the Pfalz
(region?) Germany.
Are Mechenheim, Gronau, Alsheim, Friedelsheim all closely related towns,
cities, burgs?
