Oh, thank you, Joyce Reece,
for your reply. I think the Gastons are a difficult name to trace in TN. I
heard from someone asking about Gastons and I wish I'd have kept the message
since I've found you. Maybe we can research the Gastons together. What is
your name that you are researching?

I recently borrowed this 116 year old "Illustrated Historical Atlas of Augusta County Virginia, 1885" by Jedidiah Hotchkiss, official map maker for General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia in the War Between the States. Included in this publication is a short article with a Hotchkiss illustration of the J. Frank Clemmer Distillery.
J. Frank Clemmer
Distilling has always been one of the industrial interests of Augusta County, and among the pioneers in the business was George D. Clemmer, who began the manufacture of the now famous Clemmer whiskey in the year 1800. He began in a very limited way, the distilling being done in the house in which he lived and which was near the site of the present distillery. In 1835 the property came into possession of D. F. Clemmer, who carried on the business until his decease, which occurred in 18--. Since this time Mr. J. Frank Clemmer has conducted the business, and is the present proprietor. The distillery is located some fourteen miles west of Staunton, and is very complete in all its appointments, and its product has an enviable reputation and an extensive sale.

NOAH TYLER BISH
A self-educated and self-made man, his force of character, unaltering
perseverance and laudable ambition have
brought Noah Tyler Bish to a creditable position among the successful
merchants of Dayton, where he is now
conducting a grocery business as a senior partner of the firm of N. T.
Bish & Son. He was born near Westminster,
Carroll County, Maryland, September 20, 1843, and represents one of the
old families of that state founded in
America by his great-grandfather, who was born in Germany and with two
brothers came to the new world, settling
in Baltimore. The grandfather, Adam Bish, was born in Maryland in the
eighteenth century and died in 1854.
William Bish, the father of our subject, was a native of Carroll
County, Maryland, and died upon a farm there in
1875, at the age of seventy-five years. His wife passed away in the
same year. Their children besides our subject
were Ephraim S. and Alfred W., both deceased; Anna M., deceased wife of
Jonas Warner; Henry J. and David,
both deceased; Joel B. and Reuben G., residents of Carroll County,
Maryland; Mary J., deceased; Ezra M. and Silas
M., also living in Carroll County, Maryland; and Catherine, who died at
the age of two years.
Noah Tyler Bish spent his youthful days in the county of his nativity,
where he remained until he attained his
majority, pursuing his education between the ages of nine and seventeen
years. His opportunities, however, were
quite limited, his longest term being twenty-eight days. He has been,
however, an apt student in the school of
experience, learning from each new condition and interest of life the
lesson which it contained. On leaving home he
removed to Montgomery County, Ohio, where he was employed on a farm for
three seasons.
Mr. Bish completed his arrangements for having a home of his own by his
marriage, November 11, 1869, to Miss
Sarah C. Clemmer, a daughter of George L. Clemmer, who died in Dayton,
January 20, 1902. Her mother passed
away in the same city on the 8th of October, 1887. At an early date her
grandfather, Andrew Clemmer, came to this
state from Rockingham County, Virginia, in company with his two
brothers, John and David, and entered land in
Montgomery County under the homestead law. Mrs. Bish is one of a family
of five children, the others being David,
a resident of Johnsville, Ohio; Elizabeth, deceased wife of Josiah
Hull; Lewis D., of Dayton; and John W., who died
at the age of seven years.
The year following his marriage Mr. Bish purchased forty acres of land
in Perry Township, there carrying on general
farming from 1870 until 1884, during which time he brought his fields
under a high state of cultivation, while the rich
crops which he gathered enabled him to continuously add to his capital.
He then came to Dayton and invested in a
stock of groceries, opening his store on the same site where he now
carries on business. From the beginning he has
prospered in his commercial pursuits and now has a large and well
appointed store and a liberal patronage is
accorded him. His trade is of a most gratifying character and the
reliability of his methods is indicated by the fact
that many of his patrons have been with him for years. Admitting his
son to a partnership, the business is now
continued under the firm style of N. T. Bish & Son.
Unto Mr. And Mrs. Bish have been born three children: George William,
his father's partner; Susan Addie, who died
in 1889 at the age of sixteen years; and Ray Clemmer, born in 1890. The
parents hold membership in the Grace
Reformed Church and their influence is always on the side of justice,
truth and progress. Mr. Bish votes with the
democracy but has never sought the rewards of office for the party
fealty. His life has been quietly passed in
devotion to the duties that have devolved upon him through his business
relations, and the secret of his success lies in
his trustworthiness, industry and commercial integrity.

GEORGE W. BISH, Dayton
Financier, business man and public official, George W. Bish has a
record of long and competent service in public
offices, and his private interests to-day embrace much successful
enterprise of the most constructive type. In brief,
Mr. Bish, as a citizen and as a civic servant, is recognized as one who
pursues a common aim of actual service.
Public progress is represented as well in the workings of the Union
Building & Loan Association, of which he is
assistant secretary and general manager, as in the office of city
commissioner, whose duties he pays the respect of
intelligent industry and of great practical experience. Mr. Bish is
also a director and vice president of the Acorn
Home Company, which has added substantial advance to the general
progress of this city, having developed many
residential plats and contributed an important impulse to the expansion
of the best type of residence communities.
George W. Bish was born in Dayton, November 13, 1871, the son of Noah
T. and Sarah C. (Clemmer) Bish, and
was educated in the public schools of Dayton. On leaving school he
entered business with his father, a successful
merchant of this city, and for more than twenty years was associated
with him in the grocery business. George W.
Bish was elected city auditor of Dayton in 1908, an office he filled
for four years. In 1917, he entered on the office
of county auditor of Montgomery County, disposing of the grocery
business.
In 1923, he terminated his service as county auditor and, having then
for more than ten years been a director of the
Union Building & Loan Association, he became general manager of that
institution and was made its assistant
secretary. His administrative duties in the Union Building & Loan
Association to-day constitute his principal interest.
In 1925 he was elected to the Board of Commissioners of the city of
Dayton, and has brought to that office an
experience with public administration which is well leavened by the
thorough knowledge of business practices
derived from his wide interests in the business life of Dayton for a
quarter of a century.
During the World War, he contributed valuable service to the civilian
war work as chairman of the Food
Commission.
He is a member of the Masonic Bodies, including Scottish Rite
(Thirty-Second Degree) and Shrine; is a past
commander of Reed Commandery, Knights Templar, and a member of the
Noontide Club; is a member of Miami
Lodge No. 32, Knights of Pythias and the Triangle Club; the Odd
Fellows, the Dayton Chamber of Commerce and
other societies, civic and social.
Mr. Bish has one son, Howard P. Bish. His wife is deceased.

Can anyone give me more information on George Longer Clemmer?
The Clemmer-Klemmer Family and Relatives web site
http://www.midcoast.com/~davisw/cl_0017.html
lists a George Longer Clemmer as the son of both Andrew Clemmer and David
Fishborne Klemmer (btw, David Fishborne is listed as born in 1870 and died
in 1848).
In each case, George Longer married Susan Drayer or Susanna Dreyer on Sept
6, 1838 in Montgomery County, Ohio.
Does anyone have information which can prove whether he is the son of Andrew
or David Fishborne Clemmer?
Does anyone have additional information on George Longer and Susanna
Clemmer's descendants? George was born in Montgomery County, Ohio in 1813
or 1815 depending on the source.
Thanks for your help.

I have this from the HISTORY OF MONTGOMERY COUNT, iLLISTRATED 1882, Beers.
Harrison Township: George L. Clemmer, retired farmer, Post Office Dayton.
Just across the line which separated Dayton from Harrison 'Township quietly
watching the progress of our growing county and settled probably for the
remainder of his life, on a half acre of ground, containing a comforatble
dwelling-house and large storeroom, we find the subject of our sketch. His
father, ANDREW, was a native of Pennsylvania who emigrated to Virginia in an
early day and there married Salome Black. Not liking that state, he, in
1814, removed to Ohio, and with his family, located in Perry Township where
he entered a 3/4 section of land, cleared a part of it, built a mill, and no
neighbor nearer than three miles, commenced his pioneer life. The wild deer,
turkeys and wolves were then familiar subjects of everyday life in that
locality. It was there our subject first saw the light of day on 14 June
1815, there he received his limited education in the old slab-seated
schoolhouse, and amid these scenes he grew up to man' s estate. He remained
with his parents until 23 years of age, when he married Susan Drayer who was
born March 30, 1820, daughter of Peter and Elizabeth (Myers) Drayer, natives
of Pennsylvania. After his marriage he took 100 acres of land, cleared it
himself, built his own house, made his own farming implements and commenced
doing his share toward making this county what it is today. After remaining
in Perry Township 52 years, he moved to Dayton, having, while in that
township, accumulated some 320 acres of land. He has had 6 children, of whom
he has succeeded in raising four, viz: David, Elizabeth, Lewis D. and Sarah.
His other two were John W. and one that died in infancy. Mr. Clemmer was
Trustee of his township five years and School Director nine years. He and his
wife are members of the German Reformed Church, of which he has been an elder
for some time. This couple, though old, are hale and hearty, and are now
enjoying the health and comforts due to two whose lives have been so well
spent.
Hope this helps.
