Dear Agnes and other list members:
Thanks so much for the ancestor information of John Clemmer and his
daughter, Catharine.
I am trying to link John and his family to Sarah C. Clemmer as mentioned in
my first email.
>From her death certificate, Sarah C. Clemmer (2-6-1849 to 12-11-1928), born
in Johnsville, Montgomery County, Ohio, was the daughter of George L.
Clemmer, born in Virginia and Susan Drayer, born in Montgomery County, Ohio.
A biography of Sarah's husband, Noah T. Bish, states that George L.
Clemmer died in Dayton, January 20, 1902 and Susan Drayer died October 8,
1887. It also states that "her grandfather, Andrew Clemmer, came to this
state (Ohio) from Rockingham County, Virginia, in company with his two
brothers, John and David, and entered land in Montgomery County under the
homestead law."
Can anyone link Sarah's family to the family the John that Agnes discusses
in her email below??
Thanks for everyone's help.

Dear Rick,
John Clemmer and Phoebe Noevius came from the Shenandoah Valley
of Virginia to Ohio, probably from Rockbridge County. John was the son
of George Clemmer and wife Magdalena. This couple were probably married
in York County, PA, where their older children were born and baptized.
George Clemmer died in Virginia in 1828, leaving son George, Jr. to carry
on the family name in the Shenandoah Valley. The other sons moved to
Ohio.
George Clemmer was the son of Johann Ludwig Clemmer and Maria
Elizabetha Boeckel, my ancestors. This couple were married in Germany in
1742; my George Valentine was born in York County, PA in 1747. George
and Maria Elizabetha had four sons, Jacob Casper, George Valentine,
Lawrence, and your George, and a daughter.
Now comes the tragedy. The Clemmers moved to the Conococheague
settlement in present Washington Co., MD, on the frontier.
Tradition is that in August 1756 the daughter drowned, was buried, the
mourners were attacked by Indians, the parents killed, George Valentine
and Lawrence taken into captivity. But your baby George and oldest
brother Jacob Casper escaped and were taken back to relatives in York
County.
George Valentine Boeckel, probably the mother's brother, died a
few years later, leaving his assets to the four Clemmer sons. Col.
Bouquet's expedition in November 1764 brought back many Indian captives,
including the Clemmer brothers. There are York County records of
guardians being appointed for the boys, and the division of the Boeckel
estate. George Valentine, Lawrence, and George appear in York County
through the early 1780's. My Valentine died there in 1785, and his widow
and children moved to NC. Lawrence and his family moved to Allegany
County, MD, where he died in 1808. Jacob Casper and his family moved to
Fayette Co., PA. Lawrence's younger son Lewis also moved to Fayette Co.,
PA.
I do not know the family of Magdalena. I tend to believe that
each brother moved from York County along with the family of his wife.
If you don't hear from others, I'll provide more details.

My ancestors include two brothers, Henry John Bish (8 Sept 1830 - 1901) and
Noah Tyler Bish (20 Sept 1843 - 5 Oct 1922). They were born in Carroll
County, Maryland and migrated to Montgomery and Darke Counties, Ohio.
Henry John married Catherine Clemmer, born 13 June 1834 in Johnsville, Ohio,
to John Clemmer and Phoebe Nevins. Catherine died in Greenville, Darke

Noah Tyler married Sarah C. Clemmer, born 1847 in Johnsville, Ohio to Geroge

Dayton.
I am not very familiar with the Clemmer family. It appears that Sarah and
Catharine may be related since they were both born in Johnsville. Can anyone
help me trace them back to a common ancestor?
I can provide information on the descendants of both families if there is
interest.

Catharine Clemmer is the wife of Henry John Bish.
OBITUARY - BISH (1911) from Bish file, Garst Museum, Greenville, Ohio
Mrs. Catherine Bish was born near Johnsville, in Montgomery County, O.,
June 13, 1834, and died in Greenville,
Ohio, on July 25, 1911, aged 77 years, 1 month and 2 days.
She was the youngest of eleven children of John and Phoebe Clemmer, who
emigrated from Rockingham county,
Va., to Ohio, about 94 years ago. All but three of this family lived to
advanced ages.
On October 26th, 1854, Cahterine Clemmer was married to Henry J. Bihs,
whom she assisted in making a
success as a farmer. In 1873 they moved to Darke county and purchased a
farm in Neave township, near
Weaver's Sation, where they resided until the spring of 1901, where
they moved to another farm of thiers in
Greenville township, just south of Greenville, but Mr. Bish died in
July of the same year.
They had five children: Phoebe Isadora, who died when she was about
twelve years old; Mary Frances who was
the wife of John Warner and died in 1892 leaving two sons; Eva Jane,
now Mrs. James Lambertson; Emma A.
and Ward C. , who live in Greenville. There are surviving five
grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Mother Bish did her part with industry and frugality toward rearing
their family and acquiring extensive farms,
which abundantly supported their declining years. As long as health
permitted, Mrs. Bish was a regular attendantat
Sunday School and church services. For more than five years she was an
invalid and suffered much from a
complication of diseases.
Last March, she was moved to the residence in Greenville, where her
daughter Emma and son Ward
affectionately cared for her wants. On Sunday evening, July 23d, she
took her bed, whence the spirit took its
departure on Tuesday morning. Thus ended the life of a noble woman, of
whom her many acquaintances could
truthfully say as from the last chapter of the Book of Proverbs: "She
looketh well to the ways of her household
and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up and call
her blessed."
The funeral services were held from the residence on Washington avenue,
Greenville, Ohio, at 10 a.m., July 28th.

settled in Springhill Township, Fayette County abt 1790 (if memory serves me

old family stomping grounds. Cemetaries, homesteads, churches, whatever you
might think interesting -- maybe I can get this all mapped out well enough
that we can actually find and photograph a few of the places I have only

CLYMER, Ruth H.
Ruth H. Clymer, 77, of Bradley St., Saco, ME, went
to be with her Lord on Tuesday (August 22, 2000).
Her courageous battle with pancreatic cancer ended
in the comfort of her home and in the company of
her loving family. Ruth's life started in October
12, 1922 in Massachusetts and she was the daughter
of Harold and Mary Henneberry. She attended Hall
High School in West Hartford. She married her
husband and best friend John Clymer of Delaware in
1944 while both were in the Armed Forces. They
settled in the Elmwood section of West Hartford
where they bought a house at 43 Manchester Circle
and lived from 1944 to 1986. In 1986, Ruth and
John's adventurous spirits brought them to Saco, ME
where they bought a new home and made new friends.
Ruth's life was devoted to raising and nurturing
seven children. Even though the responsibilities of
raising such a large family consumed much of her
time, Ruth still involved herself in many community
activities. She was honored for the volunteer work
she performed at the Newington Veteran's Hospital.
While in Connecticut, she was also very involved in
activities and events in the Saint Brigid's parish.
After moving to Maine, Ruth volunteered regularly
at the Saco Food Pantry. She was also an active
member of the Most Holy Trinity parish. In 1998,
Ruth's husband John died a peaceful death at their
Saco, ME home. She is survived by her daughters,
Sharyn Shearer of Scarborough, ME and Mary Ann
Smith of West Hartford. Her surviving sons are
Robert Clymer of Portland, ME, Barry Clymer of
Holland, MI, Brian Clymer of Avon, John Clymer of
Wethersfield, and David Clymer of West Hartford.
Ruth was also blessed with 12 grandchildren, each
of whom were the pride and joy of her life. Ruth
has generously donated her body to the University
of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine.
There will be a memorial service for her family and
friends at Most Holy Trinity on August 24, at 9
a.m. In lieu of flowers and as an expression of
their gratitude for the tender care provided to
their mother, Ruth's family has requested that
donations be made to Hospice of VNS, 15 Industrial
