Thanks for the updated info. on the Clemmer clan. My wife Lee and her

On 5-28, Lenny Clemmer brought me some printed data from Rowan Co. Just
outside of Mocksville, NC near Interstate 40 is a historical marker, "Squire
Boone, father off Daniel Boone, owned land here. Nearby is the land James
Andrews sold to Margaret Clemmer. Also Lenny had data on a Conrad Duttera
who attended Christ Lutheran Church in Littlestown, YorkCo, PA. home of
Valentine & Margaret Clemmer. Also data on Balsar Duttero. We need more data
on Wiliam Hancock of Stokes Co NC. -----Also he wants to know if Agness
Yount got the data I recently posted that summarizes his new Rowan Co data.
----Charles Hite
Hal, Lenny just phoned me the data Friday am, before he went to work. Have
no Book or page #'s yet. However, from previous data Lenny and I both
believe Elizabeth Margaret Clemmer was a maiden Totherow-Duttero as listed in
OUR KIN. However it appears OUR KIN has the roles reversed for Margaret
Clemmer and Felty Clemmer as to who went to Tennessee ca 1827. That leaves
Pennsylvania open for researching on Duttero.

Lenny went back to Rowan Co 5-21. He found a history of Duttero-Totherow

was a name associated woith PA, so now we have the same location as the

Hi Gang, Maybe someone will be interested in Lenny's upcoming trip to
Monroe Co, TN in search of our grandmother.

Hi Len,
Good to hear from and know that you are still having fun with our
CLEMMERs! Wish I could join you on your research trip into Monroe Co,
TN next month!
Let me ramble a little before I answer your letter of 15th last.
My notes for our gm CLEMMER are:
Valentine's widow in 1785 PA will is Margaret,
Margaret CLYMORE is listed on 1790 Lincoln Co, NC census??? Is there
such??
Margaret CLIMERE in on 1800 Lincoln Co Census,
Widow CLEMMER is on 1810 Lincoln Co Census,
Nothing on 1820 census, (is she in HH of someone else???)
Probably in HH of son John on 1830 census of TN
Are there other sightings?
And I still list her as Elizabeth! Is that only from "Our Kin"? Anyone
else?
What are the sightings in Rowan Co?
Yes, I was in Monroe Co, TN maybe 15 years ago and visited the court
house, libraries & the Clemmer Cem. I was working on our CLELMMERS as
well as my gf John YOUNG who m Anna CLEMMER, d/o John, s/o Felty.
Unfortunately I was not as well informed then as we are today. The cem
was in terrible shape. I don't know anyone in Monroe Co today but there
were some most helpful people in the small library when I was there, in
fact one of the girls had their husband lead us out to the cem! Guess
that would have been the Madisonville Lib. I would phone them as soon
as you know you are going as they may not be open every day. Am sure
they would love to see a visitor from the outside! My family dropped
down into Polk Co when it opened up and I know they have an active
genealogy society. I will enclose a copy of my scratched up listing of
Clemmer Cem and part of my antique Monroe Co road map.
Don't know if you know of Walter Davis, PO Box 534, Wiscasset, Maine
04578 <davisw(a)midcoast.com> He descends from the DAVIS that m into the
family of my gf John CLEMMER and occupy most of that Clemmer Cem. I
have found him to be a responsible CLEMMER/DAVIS researcher and
knowledgeable about the Clemmer Cem.
Again, thanks for all your help with my YOUNGs as well as the CLEMMERS.
I appreciate.
Best, Hal McCawley

Lenny Clemmer wants directions to the John and Hanna Hoffman Clemmer burial
site at Brakebill, Monroe Co TN. He also wanted this posted:
Written by Mr. Len Clemmer, 4-25-1999, data entered by C. Hite
"Our Kin" by Laban Hoffman tells us that Valentine Clemmer arrived
shortly after the
Revolutionary War, married for a second time to Miss Hancock, and later moved
to
Tennessee. The above statement is predicated with " I think", and "tradition
holds that". With
a probated legal will in Pennsylvania, it seems tradition needs to be amended.
The first records in Lincoln Co of the Clemmers is of Lewis Clemmer,
Valentine's son,
in witnessing a marrige bond for Michael Duderow and Barbara Schrum , on
12-24-1798.
Leiwis would be 21 years old and his father's legal will probated some 13
years earlier. What
occurred betwen these years? I have searched census records of Virginia and
Maryland
without a clue.
The 1800 Lincoln Co census p.841, lists Margaret Clemore(Clemmer)
with 2 males
age 16-26(John & George); 2 females under to 10; one female 16-26 years; and
one female
over 45 years old. This enumeration is 6 listing above that of John Dudroe
(Elizabeth's, as
she is known in "Our Kin", brother). [Note: The widow in York Co, PA will is
named
Elizarget (probably a variant of Lizgret--a common German contraction of
Elizabeth Margaret,
and was called Margaret within the rest of the will]. The 1810 Lincoln Co
census, page 406,
lists a widow Clemmans with no males, 1 female to 10 years, 1 female 10-16
yrs, 1 female
26-45yrs, and the widow 45+. Curiously, there are 6 women listed on this
page of 32 entries,
4 of which are designaterd as widows.
These census data have bothered me or several years. Where did these
young pre-
teen girls come from if Valentine Clemmer died in 1785? There is a problem
of Elizabeth
Clemmon marrying Jacob Cloninger and moving to Tennessee. Showing up on the
1850
census with an age{born 1794} that would have her born after Valentine
Clemmers death in
Pa.
New thinking has changed that with a "what if proposition", that led
me 1st to the
Mecklenburg Co Library on 4-7-199 to verify a marriage bond in Rowan Co. and
then to
Rowan Co, 4-11-1999.
What if Elizabeth(Margaret) Clemmer married a Mr. Hancock rather than
Valentine
Clemmer marrying a Miss Hancock? I found several William Hancocks in N.C.
cenus
records prior to 1790, one being a single white male age 16+ years living in
Stokes Co, NC,
which was once Rowan Co, NC, Salisbury District. Then I located on p.176 of
the Rowan
Co marriage bonds, an entry the same as found on the internet--William M.
Hancock, groom;
Margaret Clemmer, bride, 3-1-1792, date of bond; Balser Dorthono(Balser
Dottero),
bondsman; Basil Gaither, witness.
Not only this, but also, in Deed Book 12, page 51 (abstracted); 6
Feb. 1787, James
Andrews to Margaret Clemare for 35 pounds, 100 acres on Bear Creek adjacent
to Thomas
Pinerry, Ralph Van Clive, Valentine Huff, & Benjamin Gaither. Witnessed
Basil Gaither,
Balser Dollard {Dottero). Deed Proved by Gaither at May court 1790.
This got me going. Clemmers on the South Fork of the Yadkin River &
not on the
South Fork of the Catawba! I hit paydirt in Rowan Co.; First in the
proceedings of the
Inferior Court page 72, Sat. May 8, 1790, Basil Gaither proves the deed for
100 acres to
Margaret Clemmer, 6 Feb. 1787. Then Rowan Co Inferior Court, page 102, Wed.
Feb
8,1792: Ludwick Clemer orphan of Valentine Climer(Clemmer), now 14 years& 8
months, is
bound apprentice to Isaac Jones, till he attains the age of 21 years; "the
master ingages to
teach said apprentice the art of a spinning- wheel maker & turner & comply
with the act of the
assembly in that case etc.".
It should be noted that a Balthazar Dottero was a cornunicant at
Christ Church in
Littlestown, Pa in 1776, the church where Valenttne & daughter, Susanna were
baptized.
Also, a Michael Dottero was a trustee of the sarne chutch property in the
l750's. If Margaret
was a Dottero, surely these folks are kin. Bathazar could be the Balser of
Rowan Co. & this
is one more brick in the history of the Clemmers in N.C. The young girls
in the census in
Lincoln Co. are now the daughters of Wm. Hancock, but raised as Clemmer and
probably
followed there 1/2 brother, John, & other Dotero cousins to Tn. in the
1820's.
After talking with Charles Hite about the TN. cenus records,
enumerating John
Clemmer with an older woman residing with him, I looked at the abstracts
again to see what I
could garner.
1810 census
*Widow Clemans no males, females 11011 for #1 girl (0-10), #1 girl (10-16),
#1 girl (26-45)
and the widow over 45 years.
*John Clemar(Clemmer) has 10110 --30010 or Males, #1(0-10 years),
#1(16-26years),
and one male over 26-45 years. Females in John's family were #3(0-10yrs),
and one female
26-45yrs
1820 census, no widow Clemmer, but
* John Clemmer 110001-- 32111
males 0-10, 10-16, 16-18, 18-26, 26-45, 45+
Females: 0-10, 10-16, 16-26, 26-45, 45+
I think the enumeration in 1820 should show John as 25/45 the same as
are his
brothers. Thus males should be: 11001.
This would place Hannah, his wife, in the same age bracket. Who
is the 45+ woman? Probably Margaret Clemmer. The extra young wornen
in the household must be 1/2 sisters at the rnid-age range &
if you combined the 2 households from the 1810 census, you can explain the 8
females in this
household in 1820. END
Let me know if you don't come up with good directions for Lenny. I have been there and could
probably put together some general directions??
