There is a Clemmer Association that published the book HENRICH AND MARIA OF
FRANCONIA. If that is the one you want, they could be reached a few years
ago c/o Roy Clemmer, West Chestnut St., Souderton, PA 18964 Roy Clemmer's
phone was (215) 723-9423.

I know of no " Clemmer Association "
My work has been in the Montomery / Bucks County in Pennsylvania.
Joel Clemmer did yeoman's work in tracing his and my family back to
Christian Clemmer1690
etc.
I met with the revisionists in Franconia and reviewed their work. I
kept telling them that HHK was not the earliest in 1730 on the Alexander
and Anne. I was told I was wrong.
Then Betsy Clemmer Grant gave me her finding that HHK was a bigamist,
based on her work in Germany.
The book maybe fine in its story of the North Carolina Clemmers. It is
incorrect for Montgomery County. Incidentally, I have never seen the
final copy. I am not a library.
What about 1717 to 1730 a whole bunch of Clemmers came here before lists
were kept.
And what is the full story about the Bishop Clemmer ? Did he have a
family ?
So it goes. We don't know who is buried in the field at Franconia do we?

Leon,
Can you give all of us the address of the Clemmer Association? Also, can you
tell us a bit about the Association?
I am curious about your comment about you commenting on Our Kin before it was
printed. It was first printed in 1915, so I assume you are speaking of the
subsequent printings in 1971, 1976, 1980, 1984, and 1989. Perhaps there are
more--I cannot say.
There are many well documented errors in Hoffman's work. That said, it has
still been a valuable resource for many researchers of the Western Carolina
and other families. In my case, it was my first written confirmation that I
was related to the Felty Clemmer clan when I found my paternal grandfather on
page 165. It hardly mattered to me that his name, Otha Hampton Clemmer, had
been mispelled as Otho, a mispelling which has been perpetuated in numerous
Clemmer "research" papers down through the years!
I believe that for me this was a valuable work. We'll just have to live with
the documented errors, but I believe the Gaston County Historical Society was
correct to print Hoffman's work as written--errors included. It is a great
service that serious researchers such as yourself and Charles Hite work to
correct the record.
Keep up the good work!
Frank Clemmer
I'm sorry, Sara Clemmer Martin, the book says:
Sarah Clemmer s great great-grandfather
VaIentine CIemmer came to America in1717 and settled in
Montgomery County, Pa.
His grandson, Henry (4-1783- 8-13-1866) , son of Abraham,
married to Maria (Mosser)moved to Waterloo County, Ontario,Canada in1823.
Henry married Sarah Bergey (3-01-1786- 4-01-1869) daughter of Issac
(1734-1805) and SusannahHunsberger Bergey.
Abram and Lydia Clemmer were the parents of Sarah Clemmer and the
following children all born in Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada.
Susannah Clemmer (7-23-1847- 7-17-1848)
Sarah Clemmer (10-18-1848- 3-13-1921)
Amos Clemmer (9-.15-1850- 4-26-1867)
Menno Clemmer (9-5-1852- 4-26-1867) Amos and Menno both died from eating
wild parsnips.
Who has a family tree for Bishop Valentine Clemmer
Leon Clemmer
Many times, as did the Alexander and Anne, sailed to England from
Germany then to America thus avoiding Oaths.
Mennonites were pacifists and swore oaths only to God. They did not
swear to the King.
Leon Clemmer
Chas, Just want you to know that I appreciate your amicably airing this
difficult area.
Thanks, Hal

BISHOP VALINTINE CLIMER ( KLEMMER - CLEMMER )
The signature of the Bishop is on the Confession ofDortrecht . I saw it
at the museum of the Eastern Mennonites. This is the only thing I have
seen of the good Bishop.
I have a copy of Sussana Clemmer's family that says she was the
Granddaughter of Bishop Clemmer.
I have researched the call and the coming of the Bishop to America in
1717. ( the oldest Clemmer recorded in America ! )
I know nothing of his ship or whether he came with his family ( ?).
We know he was in Great Swamp Mennonite Meetinghose when he sined the Confession.
I would like to see a verified family tree of theBishop...........can
anyone supply this ?
Leon Clemmer
"In 1708 five ordained Mennonites of Germantown Meeting wrote a letter
to the Mennonites of Holland in which they asked for literature,
". . . The congregation here is still rather weak to have anthing
printed. With friendly greeting to our true and much beloved colleagues
and brethren, Wynand Peter Wynands, Wopke Molenaar, and Sino Van Abena,
at Crefeld, as well as Johannes Cuperus, at Utrecht, together with all
members of the community there, wish we all imaginable temporal
blessings, but most of all everlasting happiness through our Lord Jesus
Christ. Amen.. . . .Willern Rittinghuysen wrote to New York to have the
articles of faith printed in English because there are people here who
call themselves Mennonites who would like to have our articles
translated into English. But they asked so much that our congregation
could not raise it. The appeal met with success. In 1712 a
forty-page booklet appeared in Amsterdam, The Christian Confession Of
the Faith of the harmless Christians, in the Netherlands, known, by the
name of Mennonists. The edition was small and in 1727 Andrew Bradford
of Philadelphia reprinted the Confession. Bishop Clemmer subscribed,
signed, to the Dortrecht Confession of Faith in 1725 as from Great
Swamp. "
"Valentine Clemmer deserves a paragraph for himself. He was one of the
earliest settlers and religious leaders of the co-called Swamp region
(the upper third of Bucks Co. and adjacent portions of Montgomery Co.).
"Perhaps one reason for the early organization of the Swamp Mennonite
Church was the coming of a Mennonite Bishop, Valentine Clemmer, from
German to 'Grooten Schwamb', Great Swamp, in 1717. Bishop Clemmer
subscribed to the Dortrecht Confession of Faith in 1725 as from Great
Swamp. Valentine was naturalized in 1729. It is presumed he had a hand
in the organization of the original Swamp Church in 1735 and in 1771,
for the purchase of land for the new East Swamp cemetery, Valentine
Clemmer was listed as a "trustee of the Mennonites in East Swamp", along
with Peter Salger, Christian Bleler, and Jacob Clemmer. A family
tradition reported by Bishop Abraham G. Clemmer of Montgomery Co. to
John C. Wenger states that Valentine died while visiting the Conestoga
Mennonites (Lancaster Co.) concerning church affairs and was buried
there, perhaps at Mellinger's cemetery. Even though there is a total
lack of documentation concerning Bishop Valentine Clemmer to a family
relationship both the Montgomery and Bucks County branches of the family
claim him as a relative. "
Donna, Enjoy your logic, and hard work. Per your data, Henrich with wife
Maria, Mennonites, were having children in Franconia, at the same time
Henrich Clemmer, wife Anna, Luterans, were with Andreas Clemmer in
Philadelphia Church records. Having Andreas Clemmer, plus the 1700 or later
birthdate for Franconia Heinrick, seems to eliminate him as the Friedelsheim
Germany Heinrich Clemmer b. 1688. Ludwig Clemmer in Littlestown PA was
identified by Littlestown records as from Friedelsheim Germany, and he was
Lutheran as per Friedelsheim records.---Charles Hite
The law requiring a ship's list of passengers from outside the
British Isles, and requiring the oaths of allegiance by males 16 and
over, went into effect in 1727. So from the beginning of German
immigration, in 1683, until 1727, these records were not required.
Many families must compare the signature of the newly arrived
passenger taking the oaths with the known signature of their man from a
later date, to ascertain whether their Johann Schmidt, for instance, was
the Johann Schmidt on a particular ship. Sometimes there is no
signature, only a mark; a distinctive mark may serve as evidence.
Strassburger and Hinke have a volume of photocopied signature
lists for all lists appearing in their volumes of ship's passenger lists
and oaths.
