Dorothy, always glad to discuss Clemmer. You and I agree on almost
everything. This is the statement you disagree with from my post Henry
Clemmer b. 1688 << It seems more plausable that the Henry
Clemmer(d.1791) buried in the Mennonite cemetery was also a son of Henry and
Catherine Davernier Clemmer>> I do NOT claim the above statement is true.
Only
that it is more plausable than the idea that Henry Clemmer buried in Franconia
was
born in 1688 in Germany, and was thus 103 years old when he died. However
there is
a Henry Clemmer buried there, and where is our Henrich(Henry) Clemmer(wife
Catherine Dev.) buried? Until someone finds proof that Ludwigs' father Henry
Clemmer(wife Catherine Dev.) died away from Franconia-Philadelphia, I give our
Franconia Clemmer group the benefit of the doubt, and maintain the Henry
buried there is also
possibly a son of Henry Clemmer(wife Catherine Dev.). I do NOT believe the
Franconia Henry Clemmer d. 1791 was 103 years old. I do not believe Ludwig
was
left behind in Germany if he was the only son of Henry Clemmer(wife Catherine
Dev.), and would expect siblings for Ludwig Clemmer. What do you think about
siblings? Charles Hite
To Charles Hite. I have been researching the Clemmers for a long time, and I
agree with everything you have said, except about Henry being a son of
Heninrich Klemmer of Friedelsheim. Heinrichs father died in 1728 and I
believe that Ludvig was left behind to stay with his grandmother who was still
living. He would have been about 17 years old when his parents left. His
departure date, 1747, may be a bout the time, or shortly after, his
grandmother died in Friedelsheim.Geprge Valentine Boeckle or Bockle or
whatever, was a brother of Ludwigs wife, and he died the same as his sister
and brother-in law, at the hands of the Delaware Indians in 1756. I have a
will records for him, his money was left to his nephews, and kept on account
till they were freed by the Indians in 1765. He was not married, I believe.
Lets talk about this some more--OK?
Discussion of the theory that the Henrich Clemmer(wife Maria) buried in the
Mennonite Cemetery in PA is the same person as the Henrich Clemmer who married
Catherine Davernier in Alsheim-Gronau Germany in 1710.
First, the wives names are different, but a 2nd marriage is possible, even
probable. Then the Henrich Clemmer, wife Maria, buried in the Mennonite
Cemetery
has these dates on his tombstone, born 1700, died 1791. Henry's death date is
verified
in Norristown PA records when his surviving sons, Abraham and Henry,
administered
his estate. So by his own tombstone records, he died at the age of 91 years.
Now the
Johan Henrich Clemmer in Alsheim German Church records as son of Jacob and
Anna
Catherina Clemmer was christened in 1688. Therefore if he died in 1791 in
America,
and is buried in the Mennonite cemetery, he was at least 103 years old when he
died.
Very remarkable. Also note the marriage date of 9-16-1710 in Alsheim Church
records for Johan Heinrick Clemmer to Catherine Davernier the widow of
Michael
Davernier. Since Catherine was a widow in 1710, she was at least 20 years
old, and
born before 1690; and the tombstone Henry Clemmer would only be 10 years old
in
1710. It is doubtful Henry Clemmer in Germany married an older woman, so he
must
have been born about the same time as Catherine, 1690, or earlier. Therefore
the
Henry Clemmer who died in 1791 as per his tombstone has to be 103 years old to
be
the Henry Clemmer in Germany who we proved was christened 1688. Most of this
theory and data was first published in the "Pennsylvania Genealogolical
Magazine, by
Fredrich Krebs, Vol 26, No 1, 1969, page 27. -It seems more plausable that
the
Henry Clemmer(d.1791) buried in the Mennonite cemetery was also a son of Henry
and Catherine Davernier Clemmer. Then his tombstone should read b.1711 d.
1791
for an age of 80 years, still remarkable! Thus Ludwig Clemmer coming to
America in
1747 would have found his father deceased, and his older brother in charge of
the
Philadelphia land. Therefore Ludwig would have a reason to immediately move
west to
Littlestown; to be with the Bockle family, and to get cheap land of his own.
However, the Ludwig Clemmer in Littlestown, PA was definitely a son of
Henry and Catherine Davernier. By the following sequence of events, you can
see why
the Johan Ludwig Clemmer in Littlestown, PA in 1747 was the son of Johan
Henrich
Klemmer of Gronau-Alsheim Germany. Note these two items for continuity of
the
same family in Germany, and in America: (1) the Bockle name in Germany and in
Littlestown PA, and (2) the two documents in Germany and in Littlestown
describing
Friedelsheim Germany as the homeplace of Bockle. First in Germany: Henrick
Clemmer married Catherina Davernier, widow of Michael Davernier on 16
September
1710. They had a son, Johann Ludwig Klemmer, January 24, 1720. This son,
Johann
Ludwig married Marie Elisabeth Bokel, Jan 24, 1742 in Germany. The Mechenheim
church registry refers to Johann Ludwig as "legitimate son of Johann Henrick
Klemmer -
former inhabitant of Gronau - presently of Philadelphia."{Note, Ludwig Clemmer
married in Germany, his father, Henry, lived in Philadelphia}. Marie
Elizabeth Bockle
was the daughter of Johan Adams Bockle formerly of Friedelsheim Germany.
Second, note Bockle in Littlestown, PA--Extract from our "Clemmer Book", [
Then in 1747 Ludwig, Anna, and their son Jacob Klemmer sailed to Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. Shortly after they arrived in America they were in Littlestown
,Pa .
There on 5-6-1747, at Christ Reformed Church, the Reverend Michael Slatter
baptized
George Valentine Klemmer born 2-10-1747. The baby's parents were listed on
the
church records as Ludwig and Maria Elisabeth Bekelin(Bockel) Klemmer from
"Friedelsheim in the Pfaltz, Germany". The sponsor of the baby ( George
Valentine
Klemmer) was one George Valentine Bockle who we think was the brother of
Elizabeth Bockle Klemmer. Obviously the baby was named after George Valentine
Bockle and thus would have been the first George Valentine Klemmer in the
Klemmer
lineage. "Felty " is the German nickname for Valentine, so the child was
probably called
Felty Klemmer. ]
Thus there is no doubt that Johan Ludwig Clemmer in Littlestown PA in 1747
was at least 27 years old and the son of Johan Henrich Clemmer and Catherine
Devernier of Germany. The earliest Atlantic Crossing I have found for Ludwig
Clemmer was 1747 in "Passengers and Immigrants Ship Lists", 1747, Ludwig
Clemer,
with only one "m" to Philadelphia. ---Charles Hite

Dominick : there is quite a bit written about the " southern" Clemmers.
Since I live in Montgomery/Berks Counties I have concentrated on my kin around
here. I trace another branch of clemmer to 1680+. None has linked the
Clemmers of Montgomery County( H H K, Henry ) with the Clemmers of Berks Co (
Bishop Felte) better researchers than I have tried and failed. There must be
a relationship because of the similarity of names.
If anyone is interested I have a series photos of the graves of the early
Clemmers , photos of Rev Sam and his wife , his church in Philadelphia and his
offspring's. Most recently I received a picture and newspaper article of Annie
Clemmer Funk courtesy of Pastor Gerhard at the Hereford Mennonite meeting in Bally.

To Leon Clemmer and others:
You had questions about Annie. I don't have much of the following
documented, but here goes: Annie was a daughter of Rebecca Bechtel Clemmer,
who was in turn the daughter of David Geissinger Clemmer (1815-1893) of
Hereford. And David was the son of George Clemmer (1786-1864) of
Sellersville/Hereford.
Rebecca Bechtel Clemmer married a Bechtel.
Besides Annie, they had at least two other children ; John and Alice.
Rebecca had a sister; Susanna who married James Funk.
Rebecca and her husband, --- Bechtel both died while Annie, John and Alice
were minors.
Susanna and James Funk were appointed legal guardians of the three minor
Bechtel children (their nieces and nephew) sometime prior to David's death in
1893.
So Annie was Annie Clemmer Bechtel Funk after apparently taking on the
surname of her guardians.
Have you seen the Annie website?
annie.htm at
www.goshen.edu The article mentions that her mother's illness led to her
being on the Titanic, but this would have been her guardian mother (aunt)
Susanna, not her natural mother Rebecca.
I have a copy of David Geissinger Clemmer's estate accounting after his
death from which some of the above was obtained. He was my great grandfather.
I will send copies to anyone interested. Rev Samuel and Rev.Christian were two
of David's brothers.

HENRY CLEMMER (1700 - 1791)
Johann Henrick Klemmer, son of Jacob and Anne Catharinia was christened in the
Reformed Church of Friedelsheim, June 13, 1688.
This is 12 years before the recorded date of his birth on his tombstone, in
the Franconia Meetinghouse Cemetery, (1700).
Jacob, his father had immigrated to the Palatinate area of Germany from
Zurich, Switzerland under the name of Hans Jacob Klimmer. He married one of
Hans Jakob Pfaffmann's daughters on the 17th of September 1678, in Friedelsheim.
Henrick married Catherina Davernier, widow of Michael Davernier on 16
September 1710. They had a son, Johann Ludwig Klemmer, January 24, 1720.
Johann Ludwig married Marie Elisabeth Bokel, Jan 24, 1742. The Mechenheim
church registry refers to Johann Ludwig as "legitimate son of Johann Henrick
Klemmer - former inhabitant of Gronau - then of Philadelphia."
Henrick Klemmer sailed for the new land on the "Alexander and Anne," on board
was Johann Andreas Klemmer. Various stories abound about the relationship of
the two men. No positive relationship has been identified. Whether Henrick
sailed with his wife or whether she stayed in Germany with their ten year old
son, Ludwig is not known.
The ship sailed from Rotterdam, Holland to Cowes, England and landed in
Philadelphia, September 5, 1730. Henrick could not sign his name, rather he
made his mark, M K, the British customs official noted the name "Clemmer."
Johann signed his name "Klemmer." in all 42 names of German immigrants are
listed. Women and children were not listed. Of the 147 passengers one was Hans
Jacob oberholtz, a name we will hear of later. William Clymer was the ship
master. Clymer in many cases is an anglicized version of the German name "Klemmer.~
Ludwig Klemmer sailed to America on the Ship Neptune September 24, 1757 with
his wife Marie.
A Johann Andres Klemmer returned to Germany and died in Friedelsheim in 1757.
Most immigrants came to America as indentured "servants," with seven years
service required to pay for passage. So, there are no records of Henry
Clemmer's activities until eight years after his arrival, then we learn Henry
is in Franconia Township, Philadelphia County, now Montgomery County.
The first documentary evidence of the residence of Henry is 1738. That year
the formal formation of the Salford Mennonite Congregation occurred. In the
Deed of Trust, dated January 25, 1738, covering the land necessary for a
Meetinghouse and Cemetery among the 17 mentioned is Henry Clemmer of
Franconia, along with Frederick Alderfer, Hans Ruff, and Henry Ruth. When
Henry located in Franconia is not known, but one can readily believe that it
was shortly after his arrival in this locality with Johann. He had probably
taken up land prior to the formation of the Salford Mennonite Congregation. He
undoubtedly was a respected member of his community at that time. Under the
date of December 27, 1738, Preacher Dielman Kolb and Elizabeth, his wife of
Salford Township, conveyed to Henry Clemmer a tract of land containing 156
acres located on the present Allentown Road South of the present village of
Franconia. The greater portion of this Homestead tract has never been out of
the Clemmer family, having descended from Henry the Pioneer to his son
Abraham: to his son Abraham M; to his son Abraham D; to his son Hiram D; and
then to his son Laaden M. Clemmer. The property in 1990 is still known as the
"Clemmer Farm." Since Preacher Dielman Kolb purchased this tract in 1734, it
is quite likely that he soon afterward sold it to Henry under lease, and by
1748 final payment being made formal transfer by Deed settled the fate of this
tract down to the present time.
John (Johann) had acquired 100 acres of land in Lower Salford in 1734. He
signed an agreement to purchase this land; but, according to the Alderfer
family history, he died before the final payment to Hans Reiff. John died in
1737 and left a widow, Anna, and two daughters, Susanna and Catharine. In
1738, Anna Detwiler Clemmer married Frederick Alderfer and they lived in the
house on the farm that John had been purchasing from Reiff. Henry Clemmer and
Anna's father, John Detwiler, had signed a bond for Anna, thereby preserving
the title to the land for Anna. Frederick Alderfer is the first immigrant in
America of that family line. All this is contrary to the report of a death of
an Andreas Klemmer, who had returned from America and died in Friedelsheim,
Germany in 1757 at the age of 57.
The support Henry gave to John does seem to indicate a filial relationship,
but there is no proof. Since both Henry and John bought land and long term
lease purchase arrangement, it seems to dispell the theory that they were two
wealthy, (royal) brothers who had been banished to the new world for "indiscretions."
The records are meagre regarding Henry's pioneer life. With the formation of
the Franconia Mennonite Congregation, he undoubtedly became a part of the
meeting. The homestead was cleared and tilled, buildings of some kind erected
for in 1769 he is listed as owning 155 acres, 4 horses, 7 cattle, no servants,
and paid a tax of 16 pounds, 11 shillings. The eldest son Abraham, was of age
and at home, he did not own property and therefore paid no tax. In the
Effective Supply tax for the year 1779, Henry paid 15 pounds. He paid 4 pounds
5 shillings in addition for his state tax in 1779. The effective Supply tax
for 1780 lists Henry Clemmer, Senior for a tax of 120 pounds on a valuation of
$4000. The same tax for1782 is 3 pounds 9 shillings and 2 pence on a 513 pound valuation.
After this date, Henry Senior is no longer rated as a taxable, and therefore,
it is presumed that Abraham the eldest son had actually taken over the
ownership of the Homestead even though he did not acquire legal possession
until after the father's death in 1791. In the Federal Tax for 1783, Abraham
Clemmer is listed for 156 acres, 2 horses, 5 cattle, 9 sheep and no negroes.
THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR
The members of the Clemmer family being devout Mennonites did not take part in
the Revolutionary War. Throughout this struggle we find the younger sons
listed in the Philadelphia County Associators 4th Co., Capt. John Capes, of
the District of Frankonia. Because of non-attendance at drills they were
periodically assessed fines. The eldest son Abraham does not appear in these
records, as he was married with a growing family and apparently beyond the
compulsory age limit. On the other hand, Pvt. Abraham Clemmer of Bucks County
is the only Clemmer on the files of the Sons of the Revolution. He served in
the 43rd regiment under Colonel Schappel; as a private he was paid $2.00/month.
Franconia in 1782 listed: "Capable of bearing arms"
4th Class Valentine Clemmer
John Clemmer
5th Class Henry Clemmer, Jr.
John appears on the lists as early as 1778.
The United States Census of Pennsylvania for the year 1790 enumerates the male
descendants of Henry Clemmer of Franconia as follows:
ABRAHAM KLEMER - Males over 16 - 2; females - 8.
HENRY CLIMER - Males over 16 - 1; males under 16 - 3; females - 3.
JOHN KLIMER - males over 16 - 1; males under 16 -1; females - 4.
VALENTINE KLIMER - males over 16 - 1; males under 10 - 1; females - 2.
Henry Clemmer died intestate in 1791. The administrators were his sons Abraham
and Henry and their records were proved June 2, 1791 before the Register of
Wills at Norristown. Soon after the death of the father, all the children
joined in a Deed conveying the Homestead to the eldest son, Abraham.
In the grave yard adjoining the Franconia Mennonite Meetinghouse are the
tombstones of Henry Clemmer and his wife Maria - bearing the following inscriptions:

CHRISTIAN CLEMMER 1759 - 1837
Christian was born on 10/20/1759, presumably on his father's
farm in RockhIll Twp. Tax and census lists Indicate that he stayed
there until his death in 1837. His wife, Catherine, gave him a
probable maximum of six children (1800 Census), five of whom were
living at his death. These were:
GEORGE - 1/29/1786 6/25/1864
Abraham
Samuel -10/7/1793 3/12/1865 m.Elizabeth - 8/15/1805-12/3/1852
buried at RockhIll Mtg.
Catherine m. Jacob Detweller
Margarete m. David Gelsinger of Hilltown Twp, Bucks Co.
Christian wrote his will on 8/23/1832 and It was proved on 5/23/1837.
It provided for Samuel's inheritance of three tracts In Rockhill Twp.
containing about 128 acres. (Bucks Wills 7038) . The two older
brothers had evidently set out on their own leaving the youngest with
the homestead. Christian (10/20/1759 - 4/12/1837) and his life
Catharine (1764- 1/10/1844) are buried in the cemetery of the
Rock-hill Mennonite Meeting.
GEORGE CLEMMER 1786 - 1864
Family tradition has it that George Clemmer walked from his
father's farm near Sellersville, Bucks Co. to Clayton, Hereford Twp.,
Berks Co and found employment there with George Lahr (or Lohr).
On 6/10/1809, George Lahr of Hereford Twp. and Catherine his wife
conveyed land to "---and ---Christian Clemmer of Hockhill Twp., Bucks
Co."Christian paidΘ 2100 for four tracts of land In Hereford Twp.
The witnesses were George Clemmer and John Thompson (Berks DB
541,403). At this time, there was only one adult Christian Clemmer
living in RockhIll Twp according to census and tax reports, I.e
Christian, son of Martin Clemmer. On 8/23/1832, the very date this
Christian Clemmer wrote his will, a Christian Clemmer of Rockhill
Twp. and Catharine, his wifeconveyed land to George Clemmer of
Hereford Twp., Berks Co., son of said Christian. George paid
Θ3466.66 for 92 acres In four tracts. The witnesses were Samuel
Clemmer and Abraham Heaney (who also witnessed Christian's will)
(Berks DB 46,475).
On 8/14/1809, George married Anna Geissinger (3/26/1787-12/25/1872)
who gave birth to seven children:
John G. - 9/8/1810 - 6/21/1894 m. Susan Bauer - 9/1/1813
4/2/1900; a farmer near Bally; buried at Hereford Mennonite
Church.
Rev, Christian - 2/8/1813 - 3/9/1883 m. Barbara Gehman -
8/14/1815 - 11/22/1894; a well-known "New Mennonite" minister
at Hereford; buried at Hereford Church.
David G. - 9/23/1815 - 5/20/1893 m. Mary - 3/20/1820 - 111131
188 , lived on George's farm; buried at Hereford Church.
Catharine - b. 8/22/1818 m. David Hiestand of Lehigh Co.
REV SAMUEL - 8/10/1821 - 2/16/1870
Anna - b.8/21/1824 m. John H. Bechtel.
Abraham - b. 8/20/1828; died and buried In the state of
Washington.
George evidently helped his sons start out on their own. In 1842,
he conveyed 99 acres to John Clemmer, his son, of Hereford and
Washinaton Twps. (Berks DB 50,80) and In 1848, David Clemmer bought
land from his father (Berks DB 88,586). The father wrote his will in
1862 stipulating that each of his seven children get an equal share
of the profits from the sale of his land. His widow retained the
household goods. (Berks Wills 11.329).
At least part of the original farm continued in the possession
of David Clemmer. It Is reported to have been he who built the
mill , part of which still stands (as of 1970) near his father's
house. After David's death in 1893, James B. Funk took possession
of the farm. He had married David's daughter, Susanna. Their only child was
Annie Clemmer Funk. Annie died as one of the third class passengers on the
Titanic, April 15, 1912, She was returning from her post as a mennonite
missionary in India.
As of 1970 the farm was owned by Stanley Fox.
George Clemmer and his wife Anna are buried at the Hereford
Mennonite Church.

Hello everybody. Things have been rather quite lately and I thought I would
try to prod things along. The total count continues to remain just over 50
subscribers but we have had a moderate turnover. All this means is that
those of you who sent quires early on might want to do so again for the
benefit of the new members

CLEMMER-L(a)rootsweb.com --------- I descend from this CLEMMER clan via
George's brother John who m Hannah HOFFMAN. -I have 2 questions: What is the
current status of the connection of George and my gf John's father Felty
Clemmer to the
CLEMMERS in PA. Who would be the parents & grandparents of the Fanny
RHYNE,
shown below as grandaughter of Jacob RHYNE? Thanks, Hal McCawley in CA

Hal, the Rhynes were
ancestors of only the Clemmer descended from Susan Lineberger wife of John
Clemmer s/o George and Hanna
Smith Clemmer, and not George Clemmer's brother John Clemmer wife Hannah
Hoffman
to TN. John Clemmer presently online as KLEMMERJT(a)aol.com says he has been to
the lot in Littlestown PA where Valentine Clemmer "Felty" lived when he died
in
Littlestown 1785, wife Elizabeth Margaret & kids to Lincoln-Gaston Co NC. I
believe he
said lot 104 King ST. The Valentine Clemmer in Lincoln Co NC records is
buried beside
his father George Clemmer in the cemetery about to be moved. The surname of
widow
Elizabeth Margaret Clemmer is elusive. Our kin says Duttero or Tutterow or
Dethero.
Also possible is Wygan from Littlestown Church records. If anyone has info
here, please
post it. Thanks Charles Hite
Here is the data I pulled out of my research folder. I have enough evidence
to go from Hulda
Clymer who married John Simeon Havens to Massey F. Clymer who married Mary Ann
Crist and
on to Massa Clymer Sr. whose wife was called Polly in his will was filed in
1818. The next step is up
for grabs. A biographical sketch of Daniel Clymer names Francis Clymer as the
paternal great-grandfather
of Daniel H. Clymer and goes on to say that Francis was a brother of George
Clymer the signer. But a
biography of a son of Daniel Clymer (son of Massey F. Clymer and Mary Ann
Krist) says he has a child
named James Fountain Clymer and that rings bells about the Charles Fountain
Clymer with dates from the
internet of 1764 -1813. He could very nicely fit between Massa Sr. and
Francis. However, there is no
reason Massa Ssr. couldn't be the son of Francis. Time to dig into Charles
Fountain Clymer's data.

My Clymer ancestry starts with Hulda Clymer who married Jon Simeon Havens.
Her parents are Massey Clymer and wife Mary Ann Krist
Massey's parents are Massey (Sr.) and Polly. (Pollly is name in will, but I
expect to
find it a nickname.)
Massey Sr. father was either Francis Clymer of Charles Fountain Clymer. If it
is Charles Fountain Clymer, then I believe Francis is the father of Charles
Fountin Clymer. Either way we get to Francis Clymer who is reputed to be (In
a biographical sketch of Hulda's brother) a brother of George Clymer, the
signer.
Does any of this coincide with your family?
Dorothy
I descend from this CLEMMER clan via George's brother John who m Hannah HOFFMAN.
I have 2 questions:
What is the current status of the connection of George and my gf John's father Felty to
the CLEMMERS in PA.
Who would be the parents & grandparents of the Fanny RHYNE, shown below as grandaughter
of Jacob RHYNE?
Thanks, Hal McCawley in CA

Repeat of earlier e-mail returned to me:
I believe you are referring to the Francis F. Clymer whom I have in my
ancestry. (I have not proved the last step, but have good reason to believe
he is it.) I will be most appreciative of any information you can give me.
My Clymer line starts with my Great-Grandmother, Hulda Clymer.
1. Hulda Clymer (1841-1916) first m. Martin Jackson then my Great-Grandfather,
John S. Havens.
2. Masse Clymer (1804-1818) and his wife Mary Ann Krist.
3. Massie Clymer (The spelling of Massey seems to be random) whose will was
recorded in 1818 leaving an inheritance to his minor son, Massey.
4. Francis Clymer. This is speculation, not yet proved.
Does this replicate your ancestors in any way?
Unless it looks like your information is totally unrelated to mine, I would
very much like to receive your data.
