Dear Clemmer Cousins,
I am Frank Clemmer from Marietta, GA, of the Valentine (Felty) Clemmer/Lewis/
Eli/Levi/Richard L./Levi Lee/Otha Hampton/Otha Dewitt/Frank Dewitt
(me!)/Steven Clemmer line.
With reference to the Laban Hoffman book, OUR KIN, which many Clemmer
researchers have purchased: On page 163, it notes that Lewis and Mollie
Clemmer's second and third sons were David and Eli . On page 164, Hoffman
notes that David Clemmer moved to Tippah County, MS, where he had a "long and
honorable life." His brother Eli had a grandson, Richard L. Clemmer, who
established a mercantile business in Tippah County, where several generations
of his descendents lived (and I was born). I know Richard L. Clemmer lived
in Tippah County, but I do not know if his father Levi, his grandfather Eli,
or Richard himself made the move from North Carolina. Richard L. was my
great great grandfather.
I ask you all these questions out of nearly total ignorance, since my visits
to Tippah County since I moved in 1948 have been brief and not focused on
genealogy:
Does anyone know why the Eli/Levi/Richard L. line came to leave Lewis'
successful family in North Carolina to attempt to make a life in
reconstruction era Mississippi? Or did Lewis and his partners' mill fall
upon hard times in North Carolina? Was David Clemmer involved with them?
Did David participate in Richard L.'s mercantile business in Tippah County?
What happened to the mercantile business, since the my great great
grandfather and great grandfather made a not so lucrative living farming the
red clay hills of Tippah County. My grandfather, Otha Hampton Clemmer,
abandoned the Clemmer farms entirely to seek a better life in Memphis, TN,
where he became a contractor.
Thanks for reading this, and happy hunting.
Frank

If you have time to be a serious researcher, then SAVE THIS BOOKMARK:
http://www.seidata.com/~lhoffman/cdlist.html
It lists a small army of dedicated people who will do FREE lookups on CD's.
They have a set of guidelines they ask that you follow:
1. ONE (1) CD## only per email request.
2. Limit names to FOUR (4) per email.
3. Limit of ONE (1) Email Request per day (per CD Owner Email).
4. DO NOT change the Subject line. IF the subject line is blank, put the CD
## in it.
5. DO NOT ask for a broad lookup, use specific FULL names (ie; John Doe -
John A. Doe - J. Andrew Doe - J. A. Doe .....all being a
full name.)

FYI: John and others interested in Fayette Co., PA cemeteries:
Dee Dee (Danny's sister) and I drove to Fayette County, PA several months
ago and visited the Uniontown Public Library's genealogy section. The large
department, filled with great resources, is housed on the entire second
floor of library. The staff and volunteers are very dedicated. Of all the
places we visited, the Uniontown folks were the most helpful; they knew we
were short on time so they teamed up to help.
By this time next year -- probably sooner -- the Fayette County cemeteries
will all be surveyed and indexed, according to a library volunteer. Some
have been completed and are in print already. Much of their holdings will
be indexed and computerized. While we were there, they requested that we
register on their computer. Now, it's easy for the staff or their visitors
to generate a list of names and addresses of others searching for the same
surname.

Hi--this is my first day on this list. I am very happy to know about
it.
I am researching the above person. If anyone has any information on
this family, or any of the children, please reply. I have not
ascertained the religion of these people or if there is any connection
to the CLYMER that signed the Declaration in Phila.
My gr gr grandfather was Robert, his wife was Jane, unknown surname. I
have names of six of their children, including Elizabeth, my gr
grandmother. There were other living children according to a later
census. Census info states he was born in Phila, as was Jane and their
children. I found a death certificate for a Maggie CLYMER, of Camden,
who I believe was Robt's mother. I also think his father was named
Robt. Elizabeth married Isaac McCLOSKEY of Phila, apparently they both
died young. My grandfather, Robt McCLOSKEY appears to have been raised
by his grandmother. The last address I have for them in South Phila is
755 S. 4th St, near Catherine St.
The other children whose names I have are: Susan, married to a James
(BOSLTON)-I think this spelling way off, the writing is very unclear;
Hubert, Maria, Maggie, and Philip.
I have found them listed in Phila City Directories for the many years
that I searched. Robt's occupation seems to range from carpenter-with
another Robt, possibly his father- to printer and press operator. My
grandfather was also a printer.

I just knew I shouldn't have opened my big mouth. After sending out that
message about Valentine CLEMMER in NC, I went to one of the pages John
Awald mentioned in his email (the Len CLEMMER research) and found out
that Valentine (Felty) CLEMMER's wife's name was Margaret, not Elizabeth
TOTHEROW, and there are census records for Margaret in Lincoln Co. NC.
The 1975 Henry Grady Davis research "Our Davis Shaffer Kin" states the
following:
"We must therefore be content with know facts that have a direct
connection withour own history. A man called Felty Clemmer came from PA
to Lincoln (now Gaston) county NC. He had children who became well known
and he became the ancestor of many Clemmers in NC and East Tennessee. He
had, among other children, a son named John Clemmer who married Hannah
Hoffman, etc."
According to the Len CLEMMER research, Felty Clemmer died in PA and may
have never come to NC. Is that right? Boy am I confused.
