I am presumably descended from this line, through my grandfather James Brown
Clements (1861 TN -1938 AL), son of Wm. W/R Clements and his third wife
Adeline A. Weaver (1832 TN - 1864 TN). However, the only problem with that
assumption is that my first cousin's y-DNA test shows, definitively, that we
are not Clements descendents-we are Martins.
All of the many matches with Martin-surnamed men and the associated
statistics leads me to believe that the "cross-over" occurred at or just
above this William W/R Clements generation. It is possible, for example,
that William W/R raised as his own our grandfather (James Brown Clements)
but who was really the son of a Martin-surnamed male. (We know that he
raised a Ferguson-surnamed male, who may have been Adeline's son from a
first marriage.) William W/R Clements outlived four wives, so there are many
possibilities--including the sons of sisters, etc.---without presuming any
dalliance.
Or it may have occurred at William W/R's father's or grandfather's
generation.
If you or yours are a male-line descendant from William W/R Clements or from
a male line of his father William R. Clements (1788 VA - 1870 VA) or
grandfather James Clements (b. abt. 1755 VA), I would very much like to
"talk" to you. I am particularly hoping to get the results of y-DNA testing,
to help us understand where the Martin "cross-over" occurred (and did not
occur) in our line.
