[CLEMENTS] Divorce-Clements
by Peter & Cheri Greenlaw
Can someone Please tell me if divorce was common in about 1890 early 1900's.I have found an ancestor Charles Clements ,tailor born Hammersmith in the 1871/81 census's living with his wife Julia and children . In 1871 they were living in Parish Lambeth / County London and in 1881 they were in Tottenham / Middlesex. But in 1891 I have found the wife JULIA with 5 of her children and no Charles and minus a couple of children but found a Charles living with son Percy also right age as per other census. It says that Charles was born in Islington In 1901 there is a Charles born Hammersmith living with wife JANE in Hammersmith with Children, Florey[ence] and Harold right ages as for the children of Charles & Julia. In all the census Charles' age is right and they state that my ancestors were married.
Could he have divorced Julia and married Jane or could he be just living with Jane and pretending to be husband & wife at the time of the census ?If it wasn't for the childrens names and correct ages and places of birth I wouldnt be thinking that I had the right Charles. Can someone help to shed some light on this .Please.
