Hi Pete:
You've found one! Me!
My Hampshire CLEMENTS connection:
Mary Ann CLEMENTS was a great-grandmother. She married William (Davis)
MAY at St. Mary's, Portsea, Hampshire on 12 Mar 1854. She was chr. 11
Sep 1825 at St.Mary's Portsea, d/o Henry CLEMENTS and Charlotte TODD.
Her younger sister Charlotte CLEMENTS was chr. St. Mary's Portsea on 24
Sep 1828. Henry CLEMENTS was buried 17 Feb 1833, having been widowed
when Charlotte CLEMENTS (the mother nee TODD) was buried 16 Jun 1829.
Charlotte was born abt. 1802, Henry abt. 1798, based on their ages
recorded at death. Henry was chr. 3 Mar 1799 and Charlotte 23 Jan 1803,
both at St. Mary's Portsea. They were married 6 Feb 1826 at St. Mary's
Portsea. Henry was a chair maker or chair bottomer. So far I haven't
found any connections to earlier generations though my father had
mentioned one ancestor Henry who was supposed to be in the clergy.
Henry's parents were Henry CLEMENTS and Elizabeth.
William MAY was chr. William Davis MAY at St. Nicholas, Brighton,
Sussex, s/o Celia MAY. At his marriage he gave his father's name as
Dean MAY. I have traced the MAY family in Brighton back several
generations (they are in BVRI) and Dean MAY was buried 18 Jan 1817,
while William was chr. 20 Jan 1822, so clearly Dean was not his father,
though no father was named on the baptism record.
William MAY and Mary Ann CLEMENTS had four children, three girls and a boy:
Mary Jane MAY b. 1857, m. William Henry LOVELESS, at least two children;
Grace MAY chr. 12 Jun 1859 St. Mary's Portsea, no marriage found
Alice Ann MAY (my grandmother) b. Mar Qtr 1861 chr. 31 Mar 1861 St.
Mary's Portsea, m. Edmund Squire WILLCOCKS 2 Feb 1880 St. Mary's
Portsea, d. Jun Qtr 1936 Portsmouth.
William Henry MAY b. 7 Jan 1863 chr. 5 May 1863 St. Mary's Portsea, m.
Kate Emily DOLING Dec Qtr 1887, no children known, was married again
after Kate died (date not in database yet!)
I would like to know whether your family connection includes any of mine
listed above. Also, there is a Harriet GARNET who witnessed the marriage
of Henry John WILLCOCKS and Julia SQUIRE, my great-grandparents, and
Harriet GARNETT married Edward CLEMENTS 9 Dec 1856 at St. Mary's
Portsea, father Thomas CLEMENTS, one witness Martha CLEMENTS. I don't
know if any of these are connected to my CLEMENTS family but there is a
possibility.
HTH, and looking forward to hearing from you

P.S. I am the first of my line to emigrate to America - please don't ask
which of my ancestors came here!
G'day,
Can I please ask if there is another subscriber on this List with CLEMENTS family, relatives, or ancestors in and/or from Portsmouth, Hampshire, England?
Thank you,
