Hello All:
My CLEMENTS line (all in England):
Mary Ann CLEMENTS (my ggm) chr. 11 Sep 1825 St. Mary's, Portsea,
Hampshire, m. 12 Mar 1854 to William Davis MAY at St. Mary's, Portsea.
Witnessed by Charlotte (CLEMENTS) CONNELL and George Ross
Charlotte CLEMENTS chr. 24 Sep 1828, St. Mary's, Portsea, m. 8 Mar 1854
to Thomas CONNELL at St. Mary's, Portsea. Witnessed by Mary Ann
CLEMENTS and George Ross.
Both were daughters of Henry CLEMENTS and Charlotte. Henry prob. chr. 8
Oct 1797 at St. Thomas, Portsmouth, Hampshire, was a chairmaker in 1825
and lived at Rosemary Lane, Portsea. In 1854 he was a laborer, probably
living at 8 Chelsea Place, Portsea, his daughter Charlotte lived there.
Mary Ann was not a resident at the time.
William MAY chr. 20 Jan 1822 at St. Nicholas, Brighton, Sussex, was a
son of Dean MAY and Celia DAVIS, who married on 8 Oct 1805. Dean May
was chr. 18 Oct 1772 at St. Nicholas, Brighton, son of Dean MAY (1) chr.
15 Jul 1749 St. Nicholas, Brighton, and Sarah WINGHAM, m. 3 Jun 1771 at
St. Nicholas, Brighton. Dean MAY (1) was the son of James MAY and Mary
DEAN, m. 31 Oct 1735 at St. Nicholas, Brighton.
There is an Edward CLEMENTS, chr. 13 Jul 1828, St. Faith, Havant,
Hampshire, who married Harriet GARNETT on 9 Dec 1856 at St. Mary's,
Portsea. Harriet was chr. 23 Jun 1833 at Warblington, Hampshire, dau.
of James GARNETT and Ann (Hannah) HAWKINS m. 16 Sep 1819 at Farlington,
Hampshire. A Harriett Garnett was a witness to the marriage of my ggf
Henry John WILLCOCKS to Julia SQUIRE at All Saints, Portsmouth, on 23
Oct 1852, with the other witness being Samuel WILLCOCKS, his younger
brother. The ages of the witnesses agree with Samuel's and Harriet's
birth years. Henry John's son Edmund Squire WILLCOCKS married William
MAY and Mary Ann CLEMENTS daughter Alice Ann MAY. This suggests that
Edward CLEMENTS may have been a connecting link, which may throw some
light on the origin of the CLEMENTS family in my direct line. Samuel
married a different Harriet GUMB, in 1Q 1854. She was the daughter of
Daniel GUMB and Elizabeth CANE, b. 12 Oct 1831, chr. 5 Apr 1832 as
Harriot GUMB. Daniel and Elizabeth married 29 Sep 1816 at St. Mary's
Portsea.
I have very little information about Henry CLEMENTS and any other
children he may have had, or his relationship to Edward, if any. I
would also like to know his wife Charlotte's maiden name and when they
were married (bef. 1824). Can anyone place Henry, Edward, Charlotte or
Mary Ann from their research? Charlotte and Mary Ann were in the
Portsea Union House in 1841, for unknown reasons - maybe Henry was out
of work and probably a widower. There is also a Charlotte Cambridge
CLEMENTS, dau of Henry CLEMENTS and Charlotte, chr. 1840, who may or may
not be related. If related, this suggests a surname of CAMBRIDGE in
this family.
Anyone having information related to any of these persons, I would
greatly appreciate your assistance in further clarifying this part of my
tree any way you can! - e.g. MIs, lookups in censuses etc.
Thanks and regards

Hi all:
Returning member posting interests - CLEMENTS in Hampshire.
I have a direct CLEMENTS line:
Henry CLEMENTS chr. 8 Oct 1797 St. Thomas Portsmouth m. Charlotte
UNKNOWN
his daughter Mary Ann CLEMENTS chr. Sep 11 1825 St. Mary's, Portsea,
Hampshire
daughter Charlotte CLEMENTS, chr. 24 Sep 1828 St. John, Portsea,
Hampshire
Charlotte, 27, married Thomas CONNELL at St. Mary's Portsea on 8 May
1854, witnessed by Mary Ann and a friend George ROSS. Henry CLEMENTS
was then a Laborer. At Mary Ann's baptism, he was a chairmaker and
lived at Rosemary Lane. Thomas, 37, was a seaman on HMS Scabrough.
Thomas CONNELL, his father, was also a seaman.
Mary Ann, 29, married William Davis MAY at St. Mary's Portsea, on 12
May 1854, witnessed by Charlotte CONNELL and George ROSS. William MAY,
33, was a Laborer, Dk Yd. His father, Dean MAY, was a Shipwright. We
now have the MAY family back three generations from him. He was born in
Brighton and chr. at St. Nicholas on 20 Jan 1822.
In 1841, Mary Ann and Charlotte were in the Portsea Union house, aged 16
and 14 respectively.
In 1851 Charlotte was probably a servant, but is listed (I do not have
the record for 1851 - any help appreciated) in someone's household.
Where was Charlotte? And where was Mary Ann?
In 1854, William MAY lived at 10, Chelsea Place, and Charlotte CLEMENTS
at 8, Chelsea Place. Mary Ann was not a resident.
I have the 1881 census and located the families on it.
I would like to get census records for 1861 and 1871 that mention these
people.
An additional CLEMENTS connection is possible. At the marriage of Henry
John WILLCOCKS and Julia SQUIRE, 23 Oct 1852, at All Saints, the
witnesses were Samuel WILLCOCKS and Harriet GARNET. I have just found a
record of a Harriet GARNETT who married an Edward CLEMENTS on 9 Dec 1856
at St. Mary's, Portsea. They were b. 1833 and 1829 approx., and could
be:
Harriett GARNETT, chr. 23 Jun 1833, Warblington, Hampshire, and Edward
CLEMENTS, chr 13 Jun 1828, St. Faith, Havant, Hampshire. I would like
to get confirmation of this. Possibly form the marriage record and
possibly from 1841 census or 1851 census information, if anyone can look
them up.
Samuel WILLCOCKS married Harriet GUMB in 1Q1854. Harriet appears to
have been b. 12 Oct 1831, chr. 5 Apr 1832 at Orange Street
Non-conformist Church, Portsea, and Samuel was b. 1 Jul 1832, chr. 4 Oct
1832 at the same church. Harriet's parents were Daniel GUMB and
Elizabeth (CANE).
Henry's son, Edmund Squire WILLCOCKS married Alice Ann MAY, dau. of
William & Mary Ann MAY. Alice had two sisters and a brother.
Since this is the CLEMENTS list, can anyone tie in with the CLEMENTS
names so far mentioned, or does anyone have additional information about
them?
TIA and regards
