Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I have just posted an abstract of a Rev War pension application for John
Clemens at
http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/c/l/CLEMENS/
I have copied the entire Clemons/Clements/Clemmons index from microfilm
(supplied by another researcher) and have abstracted all the applications
from southern states. I will be posting these to the site which has the same
spelling as given in the pension.
Below is miscellaneous data for Clements that I have in my files from doing
research. I thought it might help someone else. I do not have any other
information on any of the Clements that are listed however.

1790 census for Charles Co. MD...pages from a book.
There were many Clements listed. One Walter Clements showed one male 16
yrs. or older, 4 males under 16, 3 females (no age listed) and 4 slaves.
Another Walter (*Cornwallis Neck) had 3 males 16 and older, 3 females and 9
slaves. Another "Walter, of Walter" had 1 male 16 or older, 1 male under
16, 3 females and 6 slaves.
*Not sure what Cornwallis Neck means after that Walter's name except maybe
it is a region or town in Charles Co. to denote the different Walter's
listed there. There was a "Charles, of Walter" who was 16 or older living
alone.

Rootsweb has websites to post any original material you have about the
Clemmons/Clements line (not from books, not copyrighted material).
I just went to
http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/c/l/CLEMENT/obituaries
and posted an "obituary" for Willis Clement who died in the TN State
Penitentiary in 1833. If you do not already know about the TN Pen records, I
promise it will be worth your while to read this. The warden must have been
a genealogist--or else he wanted to know everything about the inmates, so if
they escaped he could find them.
If everyone would post all the original documents they have, a lot of folks
could make use of them.
Thanks,
Carolyn Smotherman
I'm enlisting your help - if you so choose. I am getting to do a complete
overhaul of my web page and would like to ask for you help.
What would you like to see? Do you have a query that you would like added? Do
you have anything else you would like to have added. I have been slowly adding,
but have not made any major changes to the site.
Thanks for you help.

Oh Lord...here we go again
THIS IS A HOAX....
Before posting something like this to a list...PLEASE CHECK IT OUT FIRST.
There is no such bill...
To begin with...House bills do not have that sort of designation.
A House bill would be listed as H.R. #so and so.
NOT B#209 etc....
Lets not clog up the list with this sort of stuff.

VOTE NO ON Bill 602P!!!!
Guess the warnings were true. Federal Bill 602P 5-cents per E-mail sent.
It
figures! No more free E-mail! We knew this was coming!!
Bill 602P will permit the Federal Government to charge a 5-cent charge on
every delivered E-mail. Please read the following carefully if you intend
to
stay online and continue using E-mail. The last few months have revealed an
alarming trend in the Government of the United States attempting to quietly
push through legislation that will affect our use of the Internet. Under
proposed legislation, the US Postal Service will be attempting to bill
E-mail
users o! ut of "alternative postage fees".
Bill 602P will permit the Federal Government to charge a 5-cent surcharge on
every E-Mail delivered, by billing Internet Service Providers at source.
The
consumer would then be billed in turn by the ISP. Washington DC lawyer
Richard Stepp is working without pay to prevent this legislation from
becoming law. The US Postal Service is
claiming lost revenue, due to the proliferation of E-mail, is costing nearly
$230,000,000 in revenue per year. You may have noticed their recent ad
campaign
"There is nothing like a letter." Since the average person received about 10
pieces
of E-mail per day in 1998, the cost of the typical individual would be an
additional 50 cents a day - or over $180 per year - above and beyond their
regular Internet costs.
Note that this would be money paid directly to the US Postal Service for a
service they do not even provide. The whole point of the Internet is
democracy and non-interference. You are already paying an exorbitant price
for snail mail because of bureaucratic efficiency. It currently takes up to
6 days for a letter to be delivered from coast to coast. If the US Postal
Service is allowed to tinker with E-mail, it will mark the end of the "free"
Internet in the United States. A congressional representative, Tony Schnell
(R) has even suggested a "$20-$40 per month surcharge on all Internet
service" above and beyond the governments proposed E-mail charges. Note
that
most of the major newspapers have ignored the story the only exception being
the
Washingtonian which called the idea of E-mail surcharge " a useful concept
who's time has come" (March 6th, 1999 Editorial).
Do not sit by and watch your freedom erode away!
Send this E-mail to EVERYONE on your list, and tell all your friends and
relatives to write their congressional representative and say " NO" to Bill
602P. It will only take a few moments of your time and could very well be
instrumental in killing a bill we do not want.
PLEASE FORWARD!

Please read the following carefully if you intend to
stay online and continue using E-mail. The last few months have revealed an
alarming trend in the Government of the United States attempting to quietly
push through legislation that will affect our use of the Internet. Under
proposed legislation, the US Postal Service will be attempting to bill E-mail
users o! ut of "alternative postage fees".
Note that
most of the major newspapers have ignored the story the only exception being
the
Washingtonian which called the idea of E-mail surcharge " a useful concept
who's time has come" (March 6th, 1999 Editorial).

-Hi, Alan.
I was most interested in this part of your email to the Clements-L list in
which you said:
>
"I am also working on ancestry for Gregory Clement and
>would be interested in what others have found on this. "
I am trying to find the ancestry of my Clement(s) ancestor from Killaloe, Co
Clare Ireland who left it to come to NZ in 1863. She said she was of
Huguenot descent and was very dark, with long nose and deep-set eyes. On
film I read a book at the LDS library called "The Diocese of Killaloe" by
Philip Dwyer last year. I was amazed to discover in it a Joseph Clement who
was a minister of the Church of Ireland in that Diocese in the 1620's. I
think he must be my ancestor but like you, I have trouble at present linking
him to my 18th century Clements ancestors in Limerick. However, I have been
communicating with two other researchers of Irish Clements and exchanging
photos with them which show some of the same looks as my family. So I think
one day I may find the links.
More relevant to your email is that I am also trying to discover Joseph's
ancestry. I have found one likely candidate for his father and wonder
whether you have also come across him. He is Jan Clement who was
married to Antoinette Jehanes in the French Church at Southampton England in
1571. I have yet to read the original record which is in French but I
gather that it says that he was from Darquinghem and she was from
Valenciennes and both were orphans. They had a daughter Esther baptised in
Southampton the same year but I have not found yet where they went next.
The place called D. turns out to be Erquinghem which is near Lille in the
Dept of Nord, France today ( where Valenciennes is also). Both were in the
Spanish Netherlands in 1571.
Huguenots escaped from the Spanish Netherlands to England after the Spanish
took it over from Holland. Because of my Clement ancestor's and her
descendants' Jewish and / or Spanish looks, I have a theory as yet unproven
and possibly impossible to prove now that Jan Clement's ancestor may have
been a Spanish Jew who went to Holland to escape persecution under the
Inquisition as many did in the 1400's. Spanish Jews were forced to convert
to Christianity in Spain but were still persecuted by the Inquisition. This
would explain why my Joseph was a Church of Ireland minister and not still
of the Jewish religion. It could also explain why your Gregory was a Quaker
if he were a descendant of Jan Clement. Clement does not sound a Spanish
or Jewish name but it is described in one book as a likely name someone
would take who had to change their name as it was respectable, being the
name of several Popes.
My question to you is: Could you share with me any other early Clements in
England that you have discovered whom you think could be an ancestor of your
Gregory Clements?
I am aware that there is a line of Norman French people called Clements who
settled in England in the 11th century and went to Ireland where they became
very prominent in political life. I see them as very different from the
individual Clements who arrived in England at various times after the 1500's
whom I have found in Huguenot records in England and Ireland. Some of them
also seem to have gone direct to New York soon after it was founded,
straight from Holland. I read a Clements family history at the LDS on
fiche where the first ancestor listed was a Jan Clement whom it was believed
went directly from Holland to New York about the time it was first settled.
Obviously, that is not your line was Gregory was clearly in England.
I would be interested if you detect any Spanish/Jewish looks in your
Clements line, but also in your ideas on Gregory's possible English
ancestry. I will send this to the list also in case others may be
interested.
Barbara Holt in New Zealand
I haven't shared this in a while. This line started in England, was
briefly on Long Island, then several generations in New Jersey, then to
northern Maryland. From the first Jacob on they were Quakers.
My line:
Gregory Clement m [Christian Barter (?)] (Regiscide) - see note below
James Clement b 1638 England - d 1724 Long Island m Jane
Jacob Clement b 1678 Long Island d abt 1739 NJ- Ann Harrison
Samuel Clement b 1701 NJ d 1765 NJ m Rebecca Collins
Jacob Clement b 1727 d 1777 NJ - Hannah Albertson
Samuel Clement b 1755 NJ d 1809 MD - Elizabeth Doane
Samuel Clement b 1788 NJ d 1861 MD - Anne Hopper
Thomas Clement b 1821 MD d 1890 MD- Cassandra McCoy
Samuel Clement b 1854 MD d 1952 PA - Eliza Stokes
Helen Clement b 1897 MD d 1958 PA - Joel Swisher (my grandparents)
I am most interested in establishing better documentation for the
connection from Gregory to the first Jacob. The several printed
genealogies done in the 1800's of early NJ settlers have this but are short
on source material. I am also working on ancestry for Gregory Clement and
would be interested in what others have found on this. Interested in
exchanging information especially with others descended from this New
Jersey Quaker line.
Gregory Clement :
A COFFIN FOR KING CHARLES The Trial and Execution of
Charles I by C.V. Wedgwood, Macmillan Co, 1964, p257-8:
"A last minute return of courage came to poor Gregory Clement,
who had long been in discrace with the Puritans. His name had
been scratched out of the death warrant when his conduct had
been found unworthy: he had been caught in bed with his
maid-servant. At the Restoration he had hidden himself in
London, but was recognized 'by his voice which was very
extraordinary.' He at first tried to plead not guilty, but his
dishonoured name was still legible on the warrant. Seeing there
was no way out, he recoverd himself, stood to his convictions,
and went to his death regretting only that he had ever been so
weak as to deny the cause he was proud to die for."(citation
note - Memoirs of Colonel Hutchinson, pp324ff)
"In the end only nine of the Regicides suffered the hideous
death designed by the law for traitors - the gastly business of
half hanging, followed by disembowelling and quartering while
still alive. They were Cromwell's brother-in-law, John Jones,
Adrian Scroop, Thomas Harrison, John Carew, Thomas Scot and
Gregory Clement, and, after their recapture two years later,
Okey, Barkstead and Corbet."
