Hi everyone:
My wife Jewel O. Clement’s great-grandfather was Rev. John A. Clement who was
born about 1820 in Rutherford County, North Carolina. On 16 May 1841, he
married Elizabeth Cross in Rutherford Co. NC. They moved to Jackson County.
They had three children Isabella Namona (born about 1843), William Alexander
(born July 10, 1845) and John Robert (born February 16, 1851. Elizabeth died
between the birth of John Robert and 13 November 1856 when John A. married
Charity Matilda Beck (born September 27, 1831). . John A. Clement was a
Baptist minister in Jackson County and lived for his last several years in
Quallatown, Jackson County. He died October 5, 1861, Charity Matilda Clement
died September 11, 1914.
There is some question who the parents of Rev. John A. Clement were. I
believe that he was the son of Joseph Mckinley Clements was born 16 February
1790 in Rutherford County, North Carolina. He married Hannah Jane Queen about
1819-1820 in Rutherford County. I have seen the letter written by a John Q.
Clements from Arkansas to Humphrey Posey Clements, one of Joseph’s
Mckinley’s sons. In the letter John Q. starts off Dear brother, but the tone
of the letter suggest that brother was used in the sense of a member of the
same fraternal organization.
If, as I believe, that John A. is the son of Joseph McKinley Clements,
then we come to the question of who the parents of Joseph McKinley’s father
were. According Cornelius Clements Revolutionary War pension application,
he was born in 1757 near Augusta Georgia. There have been several theories
put forth on his parents but I don’t know what proof, if any, there is to
support any of them including my pet theory that his parents were Abraham and
Rachel Clements. I would love to hear any and all thoughts

The aim of this list is to help each other by sharing information

TO WHICH MODE AM I SUBSCRIBED?

CAN I CHANGE MODES?

However, you MUST not try to help that person simply by posting their specific query on individuals to this or any other list though you may enquire about available sources etc. You must NOT send a message to the list advertising your services although you may include the URL with a one-line description for your Website in your signature. use of profanity, for instance). Again, anyone causing upset to other subscribers will be removed from the list.

These are forbidden on Rootsweb Lists and will be rejected by Rootsweb.

If you are unsure whether the settings on your mail reader are correct, send a trial message TO THE LISTOWNER who can advise. Recently Rootsweb have introduced an HTML Filter which should accept messages in HTML and turn them into plain text before forwarding them to the List. However it is inclined to produce some "gobbly-de-gook" so it is better to use plain text in the first place.
VIRUS WARNINGS
If you receive a Virus Warning from another party, PLEASE DO NOT forward it to the list under any circumstance. The majority of these warning are hoaxes (even if they do appear to come from a reliable source) and can cause a lot of unnecessary alarm. I would suggest that you firstly check the following web sites

You can only contact a virus from an e-mail attachment with an .EXE suffix or by opening a document in a word processor or other program which has a

in the document to run invisibly. Alternatively by accessing a Web page which uses Java or similar; again, this is like a macro in that it can run a "useful" function, but can also be perverted to run a destructive action. YOU CANNOT COME INTO CONTACT WITH A VIRUS SIMPLY BY RECEIVING A PLAIN E-MAIL
If, after having checked the above, you feel that your Virus Warning is genuine, then, and ONLY then, should you contact the *listowner* who will take the necessary action.
PERSONAL MAIL and CHATTING
If you have a personal message ( non relevant reply to question )
for the sender, please send it to their e-mail address, NOT the

If you are able to, use real names. Pointers to your Web Site and e-mail addresses would be helpful especially as some e-mail clients do not appear to show the e-mail address of the sender when receiving a message. Towship, Martin Co, In as a young man and married at age 19 to Mary Magdalen
Strange. They had two children: Joseph born in 1841 and William Ignatius
born in May 1845.( this is my great grandfather). James then married
Priscilla Miles and had eight more children. He was in the Army during the
Civil War. He enrolled on the 14th day of August 1862 at Loogootee in Co "B"
80th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers to service as a Private on the thrid day
of September 1862 in Princeton in Co B 80th Regiment of Indiana. Vlunteers
to serve Three years on during the war. On the Mustor Roll of Co. "B" of the
Regiment , for the months of Sept. Oct. Nov, Dec Han , Feb March, Month of
March 1863, he is reported Died of Disease at Danville, Ky Nov 20th 1862.
This is from his Pension Record filed by his wife Priscilla Miles Queen .

Hi,
Wonder if I'm correct??? My info is that the name Clement "originated" with St.
Clement, the third bishop of Rome who died abt. 100 AD. Apparently he wrote the
earliest known Christian material outside the New Testament and is referred to
by Paul in Philippians 4:3. When the practice of surnames developed, some
families in Western Europe adopted the name. Does anyone have any other info
on how the name "Clement" started? Thanks so much.

Time to reflect and be grateful......
Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration
of Independence? Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and
tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two
lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons
captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the
Revolutionary War. They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes,
and their sacred honor.
What kind of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven
were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means,
well educated. But they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full
well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.
Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept
from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay
his debts, and died in rags. Thomas McKean was so hounded by the British that
he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the
Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions
were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.
Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton,
Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton. At the battle of Yorktown,
Thomas Nelson Jr, noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over
the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly encouraged General George
Wahsington to openfire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.
Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his
wife, and she died within a few months. John Hart was driven from his wife's
bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields
and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in
forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children
vanished. A few weeks later he died from exhaustion and a broken heart.
Norris and Livingston suffered similar fates.
Such were the stories and sacrifices of the American Revolution. These were
not wild-eyed, rabble-rousing ruffians. They were soft-spoken men of means
and education. They had security, but they valued liberty more.
Standing tall, straight, and unwavering, they pledged: "For the support of
this declaration, with firm reliance on the protection of divine providence,
we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred
honor."
They gave you and me a free and independent America. The history books never
told you a lot about what happened in the Revolutionary War. We didn't fight
just the British. We were British subjects at that time and we fought our
own government! Some of us take these liberties so much for granted, but we
shouldn't. So, take a few minutes this year while enjoying your 4th of July
holiday and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the
price they paid. Remember: freedom is never free!
I hope you will show your support by please sending this to as many people as
you can. It's time we get the word out that patriotism is NOT a sin, and the
Fourth of July has more to it than beer, picnics, and baseball games.
