My Clemens connection is through Gerhardt Clemens, a Mennonite and weaver.
He emigrated in 1709, & on May 11, 1711 settled in Skippack Twp.,
Montgomery Co., Penna where he purchased 100 acres. In 1718, he purchased
690 acres in Salford Twp., Montgomery Co., Penna.(sold 250 acres to son
Abraham, 86 acres to son Jacob.) Built the first grist mill in the Township
in 1726, that stood until 1823. I have many cousins in this line.
I am trying to connect (ggg-grandf) John Bean b.1752, d.1828 who married
---Clemmens. (My Great Aunt Ethel's spelling) ....any help is appreciated..

I thought this might be of interest to some...
>From American Surnames by Elsdon C. SMITH (1986)
CLEMENT "merciful" was the name of four popes before the end of the
thirteenth centruy, on a saint of the first century, and two of them
during the surname period, and the name become well estalbished throughout
Europe. CLEMENT was a fellow worker with Paul of Philippi. His name is
written in "the book of life" (Phil. 4:3), a feature that made the name a
great favorite in all Christian countries.
English and Scottish forms of the resulting family names are CLEMENS,
CLEMENT, CLEMENTS, CLEMONS and the Pet form CLEM. The French also favored
CLEMENT and the diminunitive form CLEMENCEAU. Scandinavians used CLEMENSON
and CLEMENTSEN. A German form is KLEMM. The Italian names are CLEMENTE
and CLEMENTI. The popular Slavic form is KLIMA, while the Lithuranians
preferred KLIMAS. A Czechoslavakian form is KLIMEK and the Polish surnames
are KLIMCZAK and KLIMKIEWICZ.

Since we were asked to post our lines ...
My CLEMENS family is the one described in the appendix
titled "The Clemens Family" in the book "A Genealogical
History of the Gottshall Family" by the Rev. N.B. Grubb
(published 1924).
It begins with an ancestor named Clement of Toft,
Lincolnshire, England, in the early 1500s. His great-
grandson George Clement became Puritan, and as a
supporter of Cromwell signed the warrant for the
execution of King Charles I in 1648. George was
beheaded in 1660 upon the restoration of the crown.
His son, Jacob, eventually relocated to Holland and
the family name was changed to the Dutch form Clemens.
Jacob's son Gerhard emigrated to America, where in 1709
he came to Lower Salford, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.
The descent from there to me:
Gerhard Clemens
m. Ann -----
Abraham Clemens
m. Catharine Bachman
Anna Clemens
m. Mathias Stauffer d. 1826
Mary Stauffer (1778-1839)
m. Harman Godshalk (1767-1850)
Ann Godshalk (1799-1856)
m. John Baker (1792-1855)
Franklin E.G. Baker (1826-1910)
m. Amanda K. Dannenhower (1834-1913)
John D. Baker (1862-1942)
m. Fannie Moore Betts (1867-1897)
Franklin Hallman Baker (1890-1941)
m. Nora D. Murphy (1885-1962)
Georgia Betts Baker (1926- )
m. Robert J. O'Donnell (1924- )
Franklin O'Donnell (1954- )
m. Elizabeth Wray Reday (1948- )
I'd be interested in communicating with anyone else who
shares this line -- either descendants of Gerhard in
America, or anyone else who goes back to Clement of Toft.
