Hi Everyone:
Here is an interesting page regarding the efforts of a "genealogist" during
the
early part of this century through the '40s -- and, yes he did a Clement
genealogy. Has anyone seen this genealogy, and which line is it??
http://www.linkline.com/personal/xymox/fraud/fraud1.htm
I'm sending this to various people I've been in touch with
regarding the CLEMENS/CLEMENT line that is said to go back to a
Clement of Toft, Lincolnshire, England. After one of his
descendants was executed in 1660 for signing King Charles I's
death warrant, his son was said to have relocated to Holland, and
descendants subsequently came to America with Mennonites.
The main source of information I have for this line is an
appendix in the 1924 book "A Genealogical History of the
Gottshall Family" by the Rev. N. B. Grubb. The appendix, titled
"The Clemens Family," gives a descendancy attributed to a Lewis
Waldemar Clemens "of the Royal Colonial Institute of Toronto,
Canada." The text states that Lewis Waldemar Clemens traced the
line "with such success that his complete work has been passed
upon by The College of Arms, England, and after strict scrutiny
has received the official approval of that institution."
As some of you know, I contacted both the College of Arms and the
Royal Colonial Institute of Toronto recently to try to verify
this line. The institute, which has chapters in various
Commonwealth countries, has since been renamed the Royal
Commonwealth Society. They stated that they had no record of
Lewis Waldemar Clemens or his research at their facility in
Toronto. However, they suggested I might try contacting their
main office in England, which I have yet to do.
I also contacted the College of Arms. Initially they said they
could find no record of any pedigrees registered to Clement in
Lincolnshire. However, I then wrote back and mentioned that arms
had been granted not to Clement of Toft, Lincolnshire, but to his
son William Clement in Norfolkshire. They were then able to find
a record of the family, including a mention of Clement of Toft.
I then sent a fee for them to pursue further research on the
family. I sent along a copy of the Clemens appendix from the
Gottshall book by Grubb. In the past few days I received the
following response that I thought you would find interesting:
"The College of Arms
London, E.C.4
19 November 1998
"Dear Mr. O'Donnell
"I am writing to report on the findings of the searches
undertaken in the official records of the College of Arms for
pedigrees and arms for the family of Clement of Lincolnshire. I
was able to find various confirmations of the early generations
but later parts of the pedigree of which you sent a copy are not
recorded in the College.
"The record of the 1563 Visitation of Norfolk gives three
generations of Clements, starting with William of Wissyngsett,
co. Norfolk, who is said to be descended from Clement of Tofte in
the county of Lincolne although the relationship between them is
not specified. William of Wissyngsett was married to Alice and
had three sons, Thomas, Edmund and George. Thomas (the eldest
son) had two sons (William and George) and Edmund had a daughter,
Elizabeth.
"George Clement of Longham, co. Norfolk, the third son of William
and Alice, married Audrey, daughter of John Dennys of Cheshunt,
co. Hertford, the widow of John Haydon of Longham. No arms are
recorded with this pedigree.
[Coll. Arms H15.472]
"A further copy of this pedigree in the official records includes
the arms, 'Gules three Garbs Argent with a Bordure Sable Bezanty'
and a crest, on a wreath, 'A Lion passant Or gutty de sang.' The
same arms (but with a mullet for difference - the cadency mark of
a third son) were recorded in the 1589 Visitation of Norfolk and
also in an undated collection of arms recorded in various
counties, including Norfolk. These details agree with those you
found in Grubb's 'A Genealogiical History of the Gottshall
Family', except that no last name is given for William Clement's
wife in any source and her first name is given as Alice, not Ann.
Unfortunately no other, more recent pedigree for this family has
been recorded at the College.
[Coll. Arms F1.259, H.17.25 and 2G.13.62]
"A later, six-generation pedigree for a family of Clements is
recorded however. This pedigree is headed by Jacob Clements of
Lower Clapton, Middlesex (1760-1844) who was the son of Isaac
Clements of Aylesbury, co. Bucks, and ends with Edward Franklin
Clements (born 1884). The pedigree is dated 1893 and signed by
Revd. Jacob Clements (born 1820) of Lincoln, the grandson of the
Jacob Clements who heads it. The arms, 'Per fess indented Argent
and Gules three Garbs counterchanged all within a Bordure Sable
charged with ten Crosses Crosslet of the first' and crest, on a
wreath of the colours, 'A Lion passant Argent gutty de sang
gorged with a Collar and charged with two Crosses Crosslet in
fess Gules' are shown. The similarity of these arms to those of
the Lincoln/Norfolk Clements is explained in the 1842 grant of
these arms to the elder Jacob Clement. His family had long used
the arms of the Norfolk family, but they were unable to prove any
connection to this family.
[Coll. Arms Surrey 2.184-7; 14D14.204; Grts. 46.110]
"I hope this is useful. If you have any queries please let me
know.
"Yours sincerely
"D. V. White
Rouge Croix Pursuivant"
Thus I have yet to find any corroboration or proof for the family
links attributed to Lewis Waldemar Clemens in the Gottshall book.

Looking for parents of Nathaniel Finch Clemence b. 12 Oct 1842 in Oneida
Co., NY
married Adelia Aldrich 31 Jan 1865 in Galesburg, Kalamazoo Co., MI
parents possibly named Thomas and Catherine b. England.
Anyone have a John Clements b. abt. 1773 m. to a Mary Aker? I just got
info that my Mary Hocker was frequently confused with Mary Aker. John
was father of Nancy, Mary and Catherine, possibly others. Born in
Maryland, appears in Lincoln Co., Ky in 1801 and Washington Co., Ky in
1809.
Thanks

On November 11, please let's all remember our fallen.

I don't your Basil b. 1770 in my database. I do have the following in my
database; it has some Bennett's and Basils; perhaps your Basil is somehow
related to this bunch?
I don't think there is a link between your McCauleys and mine; as far as I
know, mine were all either in KY or MO at that time, although I have one
branch that disappeared. He (James) either died young, after he married,
or he moved somewhere other than MO or KY.

I'm trying to locate information on my grandfather's lineage. His name was
Charles James CLEMENT and he was born on 2/1/1869 in Suncook, NH, married
Anna Marie Specht in 1902 in Duluth, Minn, and died on 10/30/1926 Orchards,
WA. He had two sons, Charles Detlow and Raymond Wellington (my father).
I have very little information on him, his siblings or parents - only
suppositions and rumors.
His obituary says he had, at the time of his death, two sisters residing in
Canada and one brother, Ellie D., residing in Nethuen, Mass. (probably
Methuen). His father may have been Charles Clement, born 5/23/1834 in
Canada and died 7/23/1910 in Suncook, NH and his mother Anastasie Galarneau.
If this is correct, then his father's parents were Etienne CLEMENT and
Francoise Cephire, both born in Canada.
Rumor has it that my grandfather was the first born and couldn't tolerate
the strict catholic upbringing or the strong French influence his parents
put upon him. After leaving home, he never returned and therefore didn't
know of any additional siblings he may have had.
If any of this sounds interesting or a "Hit" in your search, send me a
message and I'll provide all the information on his descendants.
Thanks,
Ron CLEMENT
Hello,
My g-grandfather was John Clements Stark b 1848 Martin Co., IN. His
parents were
Pleasant Stark b 1812 KY and Sarah Toney b 1812 VA, m 1 Dec 1831
Washington
Co., IN. I have never been able to learn the parentage of Pleasant
Stark, but the
name Clements is certainly a possible name for his mother.
Does anyone know of a Clements/Stark marriage that might be a
possibility for me?
Any help appreciated.
Charles

Patti,
The Charles County Gentry book is the source
" Mary Hanson married William, son of John and elizabeth Clements.
Issue: Bennet Hanson; Oswald; Clothilder; Elizabeth; Henrietta; Edward;

The other source is Clements by Jeannette Holland Stuck & Dorothy Holland Herring
"John Clement, son of William Clement. An Overseer in 1776, amelia county, and

I am just guessing on these connections. If you have John b 1725 then he could not
be the great grandfather of Bennet Hanson Clements b 1735.
