The families who settled in the Greenhill area of Lauderdale county, AL,
including most of those who moved west from there, still spell the name
either CLEMONS or CLEMMONS. You are right about the name being spelled by
the person recording the deed, census info, etc., in most cases. I've seen
my line spelled CLEMENTS, CLEMENS, CLEMMONS, and CLEMONS by recorders. I do
know of a few exceptions where the spelling was changed from the original
CLEMMONS to CLEMONS by the individuals for convenience.

"Clemons" was a common spelling (among other similar spellings) in Alabama in
the early 1800's. These same families now spell their name Clements. In some
cases the spelling was changed when the deeds were recorded as "Clements" and
owners did not want to chance confusion. Many of these Clements also went
through Kentucky from the Carolinas before going to Alabama. These Clements
were Protestant.
To all of you who have requested and gotten an answer from me on your
Union heroes:
If I found your ancestor I attached a Word file with photographic copies
of the original Roll of Honor pages. They may or may not be readable
when you get it. They are a really nice add to your file, as they are
the original source documents for the soldiers rank, company, regiment,
date of death and burial spot. They were written in 1866 by the
Secretery of War's office, and have a nice preface and description,
along with some neat words about the "Rebellion".
If you find you can't read it, and you want it, I will fax it to you if
you have a fax available, or US Mail if you send your address.
Your response has been overwhelming, I am glad to help so many, as so
many have helped me in the past.

I have the CD "Roll of Honor, Civil War Union Soldiers", issued by the
National government listing all Union soldiers buried in National
Cemeteries. It gives several pieces of information in addition to where
they are buried. I found a burial site this evening for a THOMAS-List
fellow subscriber, and it occurs to me I might be able to help many with
this CD.
So, any Yankee descendants, I would be willing to look up your Civil War
heroes for you.

Not meaning to be nit-pickin' but "Clemons" is not so uncommon. Kentucky
is/was full of them including my William Clemons. There seems to be, and I
am not certain of this, a distinct separation in Kentucky between "Clements"
and all the other spellings: Clemons/Clemmons/Clemens/etc., including those
who shortened it to Clem. The Clements seemed to be concentrated in
Washington County KY, Catholic and from Maryland. Where the Clemons came
from I wish I knew but they were not Catholic.
Now, please don't take all of that literally. I have even seen my William's
name spelled Clements once or twice but, mostly Clemmons and Clemons. And,
isn't that last the spelling of Samuel aka Mark Twain? Hazel

Esther,
Clemons is an uncommon spelling of the name. While I don't know of direct
connection at this time, I do have Clemons family from New York (I
think)...
The parents of Darius Clemons were Clemons, _____ (b.28 May 1807 Rome,
Oneida, New York) and Clemons, _______ (b.29May 1810 Tolland, Tolland,
Connecticut). I don't know which was the father and which was the mother.
This family moved on to Ohio where Darius was born in 1839 (Windsor, Ohio)
and then on to Breckenridge, ?, Illinois where ____ and ____ Clemons
diedin 1874 and 1901 respectively.
Darius ended up in Elroy, Juneau, Wisconsin married to a Torrey from NEw
York.
Who knows? Maybe this will help you with some leads? If you run into
anything that connects let me know.

I am looking for the line behind John Clements who was born in 1725. He
married Elizabeth Keturah Thompson. At some point they moved to
Kentucky. I understand he may have been born in England. He came to
America around 1750 to Baltimore and then to Virginia around 1787. His
children are:
William, John, David, Roger, Gustavus Adolphus, Ann, Sarah(Sally),
Polly, Elizabeth, Susan, and Britty.
This information came from Jennie Clements who lived somewhere in
Kentucky. I believe her research was done sometime during the 1930's or
40's. Any information would be appreciated.

Read janemac's post about her gr grandfather Wm Clements. Maybe the following
is helpful, maybe not.
I am searching for info on Augustus Clements, a millwright, born Poland about
1812 - 1813 (maybe later); Widowed, he married Julia A. Thompson March 1855.
All this occurred in Bullitt Co., KY. They had 3 children, Sara Katherine
(1856 - 1921), J. W. (1858 - ?) and a third baby believed to have died in
infancy. All Bullitt County, KY.
Sara Katherine married Dick Raymond. (born 1851, died 1908)
Augustus Clements died in late 1859 or early 1860 of consumption. After his
death, Julia lived with (her brother?) John Thompson and his wife Sarah in
"Leaches District, P.O. Cane Springs Bullitt County KY"
Julia and Sara Katherine are buried in Riverview Cemetary , but we can't
locate the grave of Augustus. We'd like to know where in Poland he came from -
probably under the Polish version of his name: KILMCZAK or KLIMKIEWICZ. And
what was his port of entry?
I have a very short Clements line of one person and have been unable to add
anything further in 25 years of trying. I would appreciate any help or insight
on this line---Tom
