Thank you! It's interesting to see how many relationships there are among these families. So far, the closest marriage I've found is between third cousins.

Here is my descent.
Jean Preaux and Marie Catherine Fleury.
Clement Prou and Marie Placide Dubois.
Jean Baptiste Prou and Anne Eugenie Biroleau.
Michel Proulx dit Clement and Madeleine Daoust. This is the line that has at least one son going by the Clement name, though he's actually a Proulx. Confusing as heck.
Michel Proulx and Marie Archange Leonard.
Leandre Proulx (some records show his name as Leandre Proulx dit Clement) and Mary Jane Agnes Story (not English born, born in Rigaud Quebec).
Magdas Proulx and Angeline Belisle (this is another dit name; it sometimes shows up as Germain dit Belisle)
Oscar Proulx and Marie Grignon.
Germain Proulx and the late Marguerite Groulx.
And me, Michelle
the Clement Proulx you reference is my 1st cousin 6 times removed.
If you have any more questions feel free to ask away. I could be of help.

Thanks for the reply. The line I'm working on is the "other" side of my first cousin's family. Her last ancestor with the Proulx name was Genevieve, daughter of Clement Proulx, b. 1775. My guess is that they were not afraid of the "Name Police," as the parents married douze novembre mil sept cent quatre vingt dix huit (12 Nov. 1798) as clement proux et de marie anne strasbourg. Then the next generation became Francis Barney and Jane Clement--in St. Lawrence Co., NY.
Which line is yours?

I've come a long way since posting the above message and I still have not come across the "or" in a name. Dit names are very confusing. I have one Proulx dit Clement line where brothers have used Proulx and others Clement. They are both related but if you do not identify them in some way you will get totally lost. Therefore in my tree when I come across a "Clement" I first have to make sure it is not from the immigrant Clement line (yes there is one) and then I have to make sure it's not from the "Clement dit Lariviere" line. When I'm sure I use (Proulx) Clement. This is "my own way" of identifying my family. I have come across Proulx alias Clement and vice versa, and truth be told I have no idea what that means. Honestly you are a Proulx or you are a Clement. Actually this comes from a parish record, therefore it could have been the priest making that statement. Also in the Proulx search I have come across Proulx's of which I am related to only as cousins since they have co!
me into the family tree by marrying into my line. There are two other Proulx lines besides mine in my line and theres a Proulx in my mother's side of the tree. I have Proulx coming out of my "ears". Sorry that was said in jest, but it becomes so confusing when the are four other families beside your own to manage. I'm off the subject therefore I'll let go as it is.

Instead of "I say" how about saying "called" ?
When you had many people with the same name an attribute might to be used to identify a specific person. Sometime it was the home town. When there was two people/families with the same name in the location the dit(e) name was used to identify the two families. The same thing If a family "split"..
.
Until the ability to "read and write" became widespread our names were spelt phonetically by the way it would have been spelt where the "scribe" learned to "read & write".
For example there are many ways to spell the long "O".
Many came from the silent letters "at the end" of the name.
Don Boudreaux in Louisiana had found over 260 different ways thal Boudreau had been spelt. Boudrot in early Acadian records, Boudreau in the Maritimes , Boudreault. Quebec westward & Boudreaux in Louisiana/Texas.
I call that those who insist on only one spelling the "Name Police".

Dit names are just a method of separating one family line from another. However, after time it leads to confusion because a person might have been born with one surname and then switched to the other. Thus a person could be known as Joseph Proulx dit Clement, Joseph Proulx, Joseph Clement, or even Joseph Clement dit Proulx. The reason there are so many dit names in Quebec is that the first French soldiers who came there were given or took dit names, also called soldier names or war names. Thus, a person born as Proulx but known as Proulx dit Clement is saying, "My name is Proulx, but I say Clement." //
Don't ask me why there are so many spellings of Preaux, Prou, Prouix, Proulx, Prouls...
