Hello again,
We also have a little information about your Clement family on our Hayes tree. We are not sure where we got it from (it may have been you). Hope it helps.

>From what I have researched, I believe John DeGroff Clement's parents were James Clement & Jane DeGroff. This is all based on circumstantial evidence, mainly census records from 1850 & 1860, and the name of John's first born daughter. The 1850 Census has a James & Jane Clement, both age 73, living in Duanesburg, Schenectady, New York. In this same census, John DeGroff Clement is living with Freelove Head and his family. Other evidence is revealed in the name of his first daughter, Jane Clement. This Jane Clement could possibly be named after his mother, Jane DeGroff. Second, John Clement's middle name is DeGroff, which is likely his mother's maiden name, but this is just a guess. The 1860 Census shows only Jane Clement living with her daughter, Phebe Gilbert Clement and her husband, John C. Gilbert---no James Clement is listed. Also listed is a George Clement, age 20; not sure of his relationship to Jane DeGroff Clement, but possibly could be a grandchild. My conne!

tion to this family is through John DeGroff's son, Edward Clement(1850-1914). Has anyone else come up with any theories or any factual information concerning the Clement-DeGroff connection?

Hungary ruled present Slovak Republic but some of our ancestors put down Austria on an US document rather than Hungary.
The English C is pronounced as K but in Slovak a K is a K.

Jozsef [Jozef, Joseph] was traveling with JURCSISIN Peter from same village.

You most likely will encounter few different spellings in the church records. To me KLOMENT is just a transcribing error.

I don't know exactly how my Clement, Clements. Clemens, Clementsson, Joransson, Kanni, Seppa, Olof came down from 1490 in Etela-Suomen Laani, Finland then Sweden to Maryland but I have never found any in PA.
Sorry.
Sue

My Clement ancestors are from Luxembourg, but I do know that Clement was variously, and incorrectly, spelled: Klement, Clemmons, Clemont, Klayman, Clayman, Kleyman, etc. It depended how the person hearing the name-thought it should be spelled, in the case of illiteracy, or accent.
Good luck.

I'm trying to track down details on my paternal great-grandparents, Joseph (alt. Jozsef?) and Mary (alt. Marie, Maria) Clement from Central PA (Clearfield County). I've been able to track down census records that indicate they were Slovak, born in Austria (Joseph: approx 1866, Mary approx 1872), and I have approximate immigration dates (1898 and 1901 respectively).
My biggest problem is trying to determine how name changes played out...for example, I *think* I found Joseph's Ellis Island record - the details match almost perfectly, except it's transcribed as "Klement" in one database and "Kloment" in another.
Has anyone had any success in tracing these name changes? Or an even bigger shot in the dark, and branches out there that can fill in some of the details?
Thank you for your help.
