Hi, just learning how to navigate the boards; so if I'm duplicating answers, sorry. Most of my early ancestors used Clement dit Lariviere (also La Riviere) in their names. They seemed to have stopped this practice post 1850s. I also have other surnames using "dit" as well. Initially I assumed (in my case) dit Lariviere meant the St. Lawrence River... but now I'm wondering if it is a carry over from France. I think it was used as a means to identify and find families -- mostly living in rural areas on farms. Although, because it was used by practically everyone (in my case) named Clement (as farmers tended to live near water), it defeated the purpose and just made for extra long names. One of my "dits" is Latroisgrandmaison - I presumed the family lived at some point amid a cluster of three big houses. Again, sorry if I'm repeating. Good luck.
John Clement.
