It probably is Proulx. In my line I have a Michel Proulx dit Clement. He had a son named Michel and this Michel went by Proulx and so on down the line to me. From what I can tell it goes like this: Jean Preaux m Marie Fleury. Clement Proulx m Marie Placide Dubois. Their son Joseph m Marie Amable Devoyaux. Their son Joseph m Marie Madeleine Larocque, and their son Joseph is the one you are inquiring about. Hope this helps. If you need any more info., please feel free to contact me at mmproulx1(a)yahoo.com.

Hi Lynn, I sent a reply but it may nothave gone through.Do you speak or read French? "dit" is the past participle of the verb "dire" meaning to say or to tell. When this is used in genealogical papers it means "called". So, your ancester Jean-Baptiste Clement (called La Riviere") may allude to a fact about him..in this case he may have worked on or lived near a river. La Riviere means "the river". I'm from New Orleans and speak French from my french ancesters ( the Verret family) who came down to New Orleans around 1720 from Quebec (New France at that time)
Hope this helps. But I don't have any info about your ancester.

Hi Lynn,
I also have a couple of Jean Baptiste Clements in my ancestry, also with the
LaRiviere dit name. They were also in the Montreal, Quebec area. However,
none of them match your data. Apparently it was a common name. My
understanding of the dit name is essentially a means of differentiating one
Clement family from another. Lariviere means something like the Clement
family that lives by the river.
The best source of information I have found on the Clement family in Quebec
is the microfilmed catholic church records available through the LDS
library. Another is this film from the LDS library: FHL Film No. 1570499;
Daguette, Gerald.
Hope this helps.

Hi I am looking for information regarding my great-great grandfather,
Jean-Baptiste Clement Dit Lariviere who was born 9/3/1826 in Deux Montagnes
(near Montreal) Quebec, Canada. He married Marie Adeline Bellerose. i am
also wondering if anybody knows what the "Dit" means in his name? I noticed
that it is common in French Canadian names (both male and female)of that era
to list two surnames linked by the word Dit. Does anybody know why this is?

I was told that it was used to differentiate between two families with the
same name.
I am decended from a Clement dit Lariviere line.? I guess we're the "river
people."

Hi Lynn,
My great-great grandfather was also named Jean-Baptiste Clement dit Lariviere. I have been unable to ascertain where he was born. He married Marguerite Poirier in L'Orignal, Ontario. The name Poirier is Puariea in Wisconsin where they emigrated in about 1869. If you look in my family tree, the Lippincott Family tree on Ancestry, there are records listed. My ancestor, Jean Baptiste, was known as John Clemons after coming to the US. My great grandmother, Veline Clemons, was his daughter. She was later known as Evelyn Clemons.
I have researched the meaning of the Dit names, but I don't think I could give a good answer. If you do a google search, there is information, however.
