Albuquerque Journal - June 25, 1998
Charley Clement, a lifelong resident of New Mexico, died Friday, June 19, 1998. Charley was preceded in death by his wife, Eugenia Twitty; and his older sister, Betty. He was born May 15, 1916 in Las Vegas, NM. Perhaps of interest for historical buffs, his ancestors were among the French who migrated to New Mexico. Carpenters, Vaur, Rimbert, and the priest, Father Guerin, were among the first 36 to be brought to Santa Fe by Archbishop Lamy. Wherever Father Guerin went they followed-San Miguel del Bado, Mora, then to the"Meadows". The other portion were French Canadians-The Clement-Labontes, coming from Quebec and Lewiston, Maine. Simeon A. Clement was a mill-right and constructed grist mills throughout Pandarie and Sapello, later to open the first plaining mill in Las Vegas and with others, building and opening the San Miguel Bank. The Elliots and the Purcells, respectively coming out of the quarries of Vermont and the towns of northeast Kansas, were the men and women of th!
e railroad era. Since his father was a manger of groceries, Charley and his sisters grew up in the mining camps of Baldy and Van Houten. He graduated from St. Patrick's Academy in Raton, NM and he attended the University of New Mexico. When war came he migrated with his family to teach others how to fly. After the war, he returned, drove Greyhound buses, and started Eagle Tail Airport across from La Mesa Race Track with his brother-in-law and lifelong friends, Holland Duell, Jim Barber, Louis Montoya, and Ed Ferkovich. He was employed for many years with the Lackey Automobile firm, starting as a car wash boy, then to the parts department. Later he was service manager for the shops and then car salesman. In 1955, he moved to Albuquerque and his good friend, Jack Walton helped him to obtain employment with the Clinton P. Anderson Insurance Company. He learned to sell auto and home protection insurance, while his wife, Twitty worked for Mountain States Mutual as a bookkeeper. H!
ere, they worked until their respective retirement. Charley's survivors include three sisters and their families, Grace Dean and her husband, Carroll of Snowflake, AZ, Charlotte Nepple and her husband, Dick, Cecilia Duell of Poukeepsie, NY; his son, Gene Clement and his wife, Sally and Sally's mother, Mrs. C.W. Young of Albuquerque; two grandchildren, Christina Clement of Albuquerque, John Clement and his wife, Stefanie of Las Vegas, NV, and Father Yourville Labonte, Auburn, ME. Old funeral traditions of yesterday have been replaced by new customs. Charley has been cremated and the family will have private services. We think he had a good life and of course there are some up's and down's for all of us-getting old is never easy for some. During those days there were many that were helpful in the nursing homes and residential shelters-to these folks, we extend our appreciation and special thanks.
