I have been doing some research recently regarding my ancestor, John
Hill (d. abt. 1779) of Amelia County Virginia. After my trip to Amelia
this summer, I found that Isham Clement was listed as an appraiser of
John Hill's estate. I was able to do further research, using a land
grant plat map of Amelia, to determine that John Hill lived near a place
known as Clementown Mills, near Appomattox River. I had read that
Susannah Hill married Benjamin Clement. I know that John Hill had a
brother William (who married Susannah Smither) and several sisters,
although not much is known about them. I have to wonder if Susannah
Hill, who married Benjamin Clement, was a sister of my John Hill. The
fact that Isham Clement was an appraiser of John Hill's estate seems to
be an interesting coincidence.
Also, I have read that Benjamin Clement and Susannah Hill Clement moved
to Pittsylvania County. Another interesting coincidence is that in 1775
one of John Hill's sons, Moses Hill, traded 404 acres in Pittsylvania
County to John Hill Jr. for land in Amelia County. I had never known any
connection to Pittsylvania County, other than some sort of connection to
Benjamin and Susannah Hill Clement.
Also, at least two of John Hill's sons, including my direct line
ancestor, Abner Hill, moved to Madison County, Kentucky in the late
1700s, and I found a Benjamin Clement on the 1810 Madison County,
Kentucky census. Was he a son of the Benjamin Clement of Pittsylvania
County?
I'm also interested in a possible connection between Isaac Hill and
Susannah Hill. One son of my John Hill is named Isaac, although I
realize that it could just be a coincidence.
I look forward to doing more research and would be glad to hear from
anyone that might be able to help me connect the pieces.
