However, I am trying to trace my relationship with Samuel Langhorne Clemens
of whom my grandmother always said we were related. Any help that anyone
can give will be greatly appreciated.

Hi to other Clements' Families!
I am joining the rootsweb in search of other relatives. My great, great, great grandfather was Benjamin Clements who married Sarah Bailey. I do not even have any dates on them so that would be helpful to know. I am searching for ancestors before them and would appreciate your help. My great, great grandparents were James Clements 1790-1873 and Lucy Kirby Clements 1801-1866. My great grandparents were William Clements 1835-1898 and Julia Ann Kirby 1835-1925. er, Larry James Hoyt, died in 1949.
My ancestors apparently started in VA and ended up in Champaign County, IL. I finally went down to the Clements Cemetery in Champaign to try to put together some of this information. I believe that I have it correct. However, I am trying to trace my relationship with Samuel Langhorne Clemens of whom my grandmother always said we were related. Any help that anyone can give will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much.

Hi Jan:
Welcome to the clan.
However the relationship with Mark Twain is strictly casual. Our Clement
ancestors and his crossed paths in Campbell County, but tohe two families
are not related - at least as far back as either family has been able to
trace it.
The reference for the poorly written and researched article claiming a
relationship is:
Genealogy, Vol. X, No. 9 -- "Genesis of Mark Twain" by Wm. M. Clemens of
Pompton Lake, New Jersey.
Seems like every new Clement(s) researcher finds the first article, but
not the rebuttal.
The rebuttal article, written by Maude Carter Clement was published in
Virginia Historical Magazine, Vol. XXXII, pages 292-298
Sorry to throw cold water on your grandma's story.
